Ultimate Goal To Interface With Webcam And Do Image Processing

I am not a CS major. I'm taking Mechatronics.But I'm always leaning heavily towards embedded programming and electronics. Nowadays, I would want to take the dive into PC programming. Slowly.So, I've started to learn VB.net. The syntax and basic programming principles are still ok. But I got stumped when I tried to go deeper where I see, directx, directshow, dll, avicap32, and etc. What are they? and API? How ar they connected with VB.net? It's different when I'm programming microC, where the environment is limited and dictated. Now there are options so broad until I am lost.is the architecture and what has those APIs , DLLS, and etc mean literally.Ultimate goal would be using VB.net to interface with webcam and do image processing.

While I have got some leads from an older SO post and from this site, I haven't been able to figure out how to capture each frame of a web-cam.
What I would like to do is something like this capture a frame then do some image processing on it and display the output and then move on to the next frame.
Can I can access to web-cam frame events or is there any efficient way to achieve this?

I have develop VB 2008 that can preview the image through 2 webcams. However, when i run my VB and select to preview through my USB webcam, it display dark screen. But i select to preview through my built in webcam, it works.So, can anyone can the code attached for me?For your information, the USB webcam can function properly using other video/image software.

I want to have a go at creating a webcam application, that takes pictures and eventually records video's.This is a purley personal project, its something I have wanted to do for ages. The problem is I am not sure how to start this project. For instance what control can I use on the main user interface to view the picture from the webcam. Also, do I need drivers for the webcam in my code??
I have started the application with the obvious, I have the user interface designed, again not sure what to use for showing video in the UI, would a picture box work??

I need to show video in a picturebox, and when a button is pressed, capture the frame. I am making a desktop qr reader. I have the qr reader completed and working. my issue is my camera now. I would prefer something that actually works, and doesn't have severe memory leak issues, and doesn't throw an exception after it's first or second use. Would AviCap32 or Direct Show be better for what I want? Which would capture the image fastest, without causing exceptions? I tried using an open source solution called webcam_capture.dll, and it worked at first, but now I am getting an exception that I dont know how to fix. I'm assuming this goes in vbGeneral, and not the Interop and Upgrade. Most examples I have seen, use interop, so I wasn't sure. I would prefer not to use WIA. I have attempted it, and it doesn't work quite right on my computer, and this application will be distributed.

I would really like to get some VB.net program code for still image capturing using a Webcam.I've searched the web for quite a while now but did not get any codes. Currently i have a code for capturing video. In that code an image can be captured, but only with 640 X 480 resolution (Maximum Video resolution for my web camera). The WM_CAP_DLG_VIDEOFORMAT dialog box only allows the resolution to be set up to 640 X 480.

using directshow to capture image from webcam. In my winform application, there was a tabcontrol which contains two tabpages. Tabpage1 contains a picturebox which shows the video from webcam, tabpage2 contains a button to capture the image. My problem is when I pressed the button on tabpage2, my saved image file is empty which has no picture inside.

I'm trying to capture an image from my webcam and save it as a .bmp file. the code i have works perfectly except for 1 issue i cant figure out no matter what I try the issue is that when i save the bitmap it only saves in 320x240 resolution even though I have set the resolution to 640x480 everywhere I could think of.
here is the (edited) code I currently have. some places I didn't know what to change so I put in 640,480 anyways to see what happened but that didnt make any difference and also didnt cause any errors so i left the changes there.

imagine i have an image of an whole family, but then i crop just one face, to use, now i have the photo of the whole family, and the photo of a face, which is part of the big photo. what i want is an app that can scan the big image, looking for the small image, and then return if it found it, and the rectangle where the small pictures, fits, in the big picture. any ideas?

I tried to code using WIA, and it is working fine.But when I tried my codes under Win 7 OS, it failed to capture.It seems that it is only working on XP. I also tried some code sample found here. And still failed under win7.Is there any good link where I can get some info to work with regarding to web cam capture...I tried also Avicap.dll?

Itemlists is a global lists i retrieved from database, everything looks fine to me but when i run this program, I found that the threads are inserting one records 9 times into the database(I have 9 threads in total), which makes me think that maybe i need to specifically assign 1/9 of a list to each thread? Is there another way to do it which doesn't require the splitting of the list, if not , how do i split it then assign?

Im a college student and this is my first programming class, i am having extremely diffcult time with arrays and sequential file processing. Im not asking for the whole program, just something to get me started and hints along as i progress with it. Please help me get started on my program, its due in 2 days.
Here are the requirements....
1. The program must input any number of individual�s last and first names using two separate textboxes.
2. The array of names must be sorted by the last name using a bubble sort. You must code the sort.
3. The program must be able to recall the names from the file and add to the existing list of names so that more names can be added to, sorted, and written back to the file in sorted order.
4. Sort in ascending order: A to Z
5. All names must be displayed in a listbox in sorted order when the user wishes to see them.
6. In the listbox the last and first names must be separated by a comma and a space. Example: Smith, Mary
7. The user must be able to search for a name in the array, using the binary search algorithm. You must code the search.
8. Do not use module-level variables. Instead you may choose to use Static.
9. The program must be designed using Visual Basic 2008

I have a logitech webcam that I use to take pictures of customers to submit to a server/database. Utilizing AVICAP32.DLL calls, I was able to modify my VB.NET program to take these pictures via a button in my program.
My question is, it would me more convenient to my intended users to click the webcam button, instead of clicking on the button in my program.
Is this possible to do in VB.NET? and how can I do this?
If this is not possible to do with my logitech webcam than is there a Microsoft Webcam that can do this?
