VB Syntax For Special Folders?
Apr 10, 2012
I need a Collection of Image Paths. The images for this list will be in a known location. So for practice, I decided to use the images that are installed in the Special Folders, using this snippet:
Dim paths As ReadOnlyCollection(Of String) = New String {"C:UsersPublicPicturesSample Pictures", Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyPictures)}
Obviously, this wont work yet. The squiggle line reads "End of Statement Expected". I just dont know where to go to understand the proper construction.
Here is the way a similar line is used in C#

Users can easily rename special folders like Computer, Network etc. to whatever they like. Also if the computer is using a different locale, the name of those folders will also be different.I want to get the current names of all special folders like Computer, Recycle Bin, Network etc. in my app. Is there a way to do this? A specific API? A registry value?For eg, user renames My Computer to Super Computer. My app should show that My Computer's name is Super Computer.

I am currently using the following to Get Path of all Open Explorer Windows:
foreach (SHDocVw.InternetExplorer j in new SHDocVw.ShellWindows()) {
if (j.Name == "Windows Explorer") {
ListView1.Items.Add(j.LocationURL);
}
}
But it doesn't return the location of special folders like Computer, Recycle Bin, Network etc. Is there a way to identify those folders so I can put the path on my own like shell:MyComputerFolder for Computer?

I'm trying to make buttons that will open each of the "special folders" in Windows Vista. Here's an example:
Private Sub Button5_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button5.Click
Process.Start("explorer.exe", Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments))
End Sub
As you can see in the above code, the button will open the Documents folder. My problem is the only folders this method can open are the documents, pictures and music folders, while I also want to open these folders below:
Downloads
Videos
User folder (aka the folder that has the user name on it)
Computer (aka My Computer in XP)
how to do that?

if they choose to use a networked version of my software, I will need the main server doing the authenticating. This is a problem, because from what I understand, it is quite easy to clone MAC addresses. I have looked into using the CPU ID and the HDD ID, but those are not unique, well at least I don't think so. Reason why I say they are not unique is because someone has the exact same CPU ID as me, and the HDD ID changes from partition to partition (same drive). Maybe the HDD ID is a partition ID instead? Anyways, I was thinking maybe I could get the Physical serial number of both the HDD and CPU, but I have not been able to find anything yet.

I have a directory structure as follows;
ad_folder
--folderA
--folderB
--folderC[code]....
at I do not know the number of or the names of the folders, they can be different in different cases, I only have the root path.how I can display folder contents in VB.net and the code worked but couldn't figure out how to create the arrays and display only folders within folders starting with "ad_".
System.IO.DirectoryInfo and System.IO.FileInfo to be used for getting the folders.A literal control can be used to create javascript arrays in ASP.NET. These js arrays can then be used on the client side.

It appears that when IO.Directory.GetFiles tries to read a folder that it doesn't have access to it throws an exception & stops reading. Is there any way to have skip those folders & continue reading the rest of the folders?

I have seen lots of examples with a treeview to list folders then display the folders context in a listview.
But what id like is a checked treeview, that not only displays the folder list, but the actually folder contents as well.

Have built a project and associated it with a Setup&Deployment Project. The S&D project needs to contain 2 main folders (under User's Desktop) with various formats of files (xmls, txts, dlls) inside them and several subfolders. How can i copy/import these 2 folders and there sub-files/folders into my s&d project?
When adding them in the usual way, they are copied and defined a source path onto the current pc. You can understand what errors this might create when an another targeted pc does not contain those files to the exact location. Is there any way to copy them locally or somehow import them?

Is there a quicker way to check directories? For example I want to check if the folder "A Folders" contains folders from 000A all the way to 999A then lists the folder that are missing? Do you think this is possible?

I've created the design of it, I just have no clue how to load.
Basically, there is a Dropdown box that connects to a folder. In the folder, are txt files. I need w/e text files are there on startup to be shown, in the dropdown box. Then, I need it so when somemone selects one of the files in the dropdown box, it read's the text file and performs some tasks. (I am getting really confused on how I could do this)
So basically, the dropdown is just for selecting the Text File.
In the textfile would be things like this:
open {test.java} (This would internally open the named java/ or whatever file)
find {test} (This would find the word test in the file)
add {testadd}, {under} (Would add "testadd" underneath The searched "test"}
remove {testadd} (Would remove "testadd")
save {test.java} (would save)
stop {c:/location/compile.bat} (Would Basically load the bat file.)
As if this wasn't complicated enough, then how would I get the compile.bat stuff (Like the log that comes from it, etc) to show up in a rich text field?
I cannot figure this out O_O

I've got a program that in a nutshell reads values from a SQL database and writes them to a tab-delimited text file.The issue is that some of the values in the database have special characters (TM, dash, ellipsis, etc.) When written to the text file, the formatting is lost and they come across as junk "â„¢ or â€" etc"
When the value is viewed in the immediate window, before it is written to the txt file, everything looks fine. My guess is that this is an issue of encoding. But, I'm not real sure how to proceed, where to look, or what to look for.Is this ASCII or UTF-8? If it's one of those how do I correct it before it's written to the text file.Here's how I build the text file (where feedStr is a StringBuilder)
objReader = New StreamWriter(filePath)
objReader.Write(feedStr)
objReader.Close()

buildLetter.Append("</head>").AppendLine();
buildLetter.Append("").AppendLine();
buildLetter.Append("<style type="text/css">").AppendLine();
Assume the above contents resides in a file. I want to write a snippet that removes any line which has empty string "" and put escape character before the middle quotations. The final output would be:
buildLetter.Append("</head>").AppendLine();
buildLetter.Append("<style type="text/css">").AppendLine();
The outer " .... " is not considered special chars. The special chars may be single quotation or double quotation. I could run it via find and replace feature of Visual Studio. However, in my case I want it to be written in c# or VB.NET

I am loading a specific excel file into a form using webBrowser control(I'm suing this control because this way I can open any excel file). The thing i want to do is get the contents of specific cells within this excel file and put them into a textbox. An easy way to do this seems to be plain copy/paste the contents into the textbox. I want this process to be automated, so that the user can click only one button and the selected cell's contents to go sraight to the textbox(the button would act like the copy command and then paste the contents in the textbox). Also, i would like to know if i can add this option to the right-click menu.
