Way To Login To Active Directory?
Oct 21, 2011We are cunrretly developing a solution for compact framework and windows mobile 6.5. The idea is that the user have to login using custom login for on the phone before they can do anything else. Our backend is WCF, and here we have planned to implement an interface based solution where the customer can select between a variety of "AuthenticationSources" one including Active Directory.Is there any clever way to do this using built in .NET functionality, or do I still have to do it the old fashion way like:
1) Write domain, user and password in the windows mobile login form.
2) send this info using http webservice to the wcf server, where the server check for this device, which is the preferred login source. If it is ad, it will load the ADauthenticator class, peform a LDAP query against the ad selected, and simply return true or false if user passed or not, then the webservice return tru/false to the device.
3) If the return answer is true, the device will store an encrypted registry key on the device indicating to the device client that the user is logged on.
4) If the user select logout, or if the device is restarted, or loses power, the registry key is cleared on boot.is this a good enough solution? The devices are NOT considered to be members of the actual domain. And this solution should handle a solution with a database source for logins.
Move From Custom Login Screen To Active Directory LDAP Authentication?
Mar 11, 2009I have a WinForms app with SQL05 backend. It has a standard Login window where users are required to supply a username/password. This is validated using my own code and sprocs. Now one of my big clients has scared the bejezus out of me by saying, "Hey Chris, I want you to change your app in line with all our other IT systems so that users can use their common username and passwords with authentication against LDAP". :confused: Having had a moment to reflect, I have some questions (some very noob in nature!)
1. Is this requirement a big deal? :) Or straightforward to implement?
2. Does this mean that when user's double-click my app icon on the desktop, the authentication automagically happens without the need for a Login screen?
3. How on earth can I test this. My dev environment does not use AD, but I do have SBS2003
4. Can anyone point me to good resources about this on the web?

May 9, 2012I wanted to create some CLR functions that will access Active Directory, but I discovered I can't add a reference to "System.DirectoryServices" to my CLR project.
I googled it, and found that I have to add the AD dll as an Assembly to the SQL Server. Like so:

WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE

The problem here is that I have to set the "PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE" to the dll... this means that I have to set the database as "TRUSTWORTHY ON", and this opens a can a worms!
VS 2008 Getting Server Name And Type From Active Directory?
Aug 13, 2009I have done VBscripting the past and I have actually made this work in a script however I am trying to convert it to VB for the client so that it has a nicer interface and basically is a better program. There are several parts to this program but I am stuck on this part right now. I am attempting to get a list of all servers from Active Directory and then sort them by type. The program will run however it will not produce any results. Its just an empty file. I figured the problem was with my filtering but I just don't understand why this will not work. I have written it in two different ways and get the same result each time.

Jan 30, 2012I wrote a program that runs in the background and waits for me to hit a predefined key combination.
When I hit this key combination I want it to do the following
Check and verify that Windows Explorer is up If IE open, I want it to get the current/active windows explorer screen directory.
So lets say I had windows explorer opened to "c:\program files(x86)\my Folder"
Then when I press my key combination "shift+t" my program will get the directory of my windows explorer.
So it should display a message saying something like "Active Directory: c:\program files(x86)\my Folder"

Windows - Last Login Date Of Server Profile?
Oct 5, 2011So I'm writing a program to monitor access dates on a server. My goal is to get the last login / access date of each profile that's on the domain controller, but I have no idea what file / setting / property I should be looking at. Currently, my program checks the last modified date of:
\my-dcc$Documents and SettingsuserNTUSER.DAT.LOG I did this because it seems to be the most recently updated every time someone's doing something. However, I did some looking up and apparently that file is updated every time the user's registry is changed, even if the user is not logged on. This doesn't serve me very well because then my program would report a lot of false positives.
TL;DR - is there a Windows property or a specific file I should look at when I'm checking the last logon date of a user?

May 15, 2012Is it possible (I'm sure it is) to validate a user's credentials against Active Directory without using Directory Services?I'm building a Browser-Based WPF application which requires users to login to and get validated via Active Directory. Since .Net 4.0 (or maybe 3.5) accessing Directory Services from an Application requires the application to be fully trusted. Since IE won't provide full trust to an application if it doesn't have the signing certificate in it's cert store, the application is refused startup permission.
If I don't use Directory Services, then I can leave the application as Partial Trust and validate my user's credentials without having to install a certificate on each user's machine.

Feb 26, 2011Iam developing a Windows application using Visual Basic 2008 with a SQL Server database. Throughout the program I give the user as many options as possible and have no problem with either the database or the windows forms. The program does not initially require a Login and I want toprovide the User with the opportunity to add a Login to the system. The default Login form is perfectly satisfactory.
The problem is that I can't figure out how to program the change sothat the Login from isopens the program rather then th form designated as the StartUp form. this forum I am able to prgrammatically change the form but I can't figure out how to make the requirement a permanent factor. I tried using a Constant, but if the User wants to change, you can't change the constant. Its an apparantly simple yes/no situation but if I set a varable to yes and then change it to no the next time the program runs, the change will be lost.

Active Directory Display Name?
Jun 17, 2008I'm having a weird problem with active directory and the display name attribute. I can create an AD account with no problems, the account shows up, I can log on as the account, everything appears to be working as intended. The problem is, our company requires that the display name be in the form of "Lastname, Firstname". Thats all fine and dandy when you create an AD account use the MMC snap-in, you type in the users name as "Lastname, Firstname" in the display name field and when the account is created, the display name shows as "Lastname, Firstname" as you would expect.
The problem I am having is this, whenever I create an AD account programmatically, I can't for the life of me get the display name to show up as "Lastname, Firstname". The displayname property is set as such, checking the AD account using the MMC snap-in shows the display name is set correctly, but when looking at the list of user accounts, the account is always displayed as the users username. The account name I am using is "Test User", see pic below.
if you try to rename the account, the field it tells you it is editing is called Full Name? I can't find a property in AD even called Full Name so I am completely confused, here is a picture of me trying to rename the programmatically created account, as you can see, the display name field is set correctly even though it doesn't display that way. And of course, after renaming the account as seen below, the display name shows up correctly as "Lastname, Firstname"Here is the code I use to create the account, just for reference.
