VB6 DLL Takes Callback As Integer, Requires Delegate Reference Type?
Dec 21, 2009
I have an issue with a third-party COM+ DLL meant to be used from VB6, where it has a function to set a Callback for a hardware event. However, I'm using VB.NET, and AddressOf now returns a reference type instead of an integral type, which means that the setCallback function on the COM+ DLL apparently can't be used.

I faced an error when upgrading VB6 code to VB.NET. The error occurs at AddressOf WindowProc
AddressOf expression cannot be converted to 'Integer' because 'Integer' is not a delegate type
My declaration for SetWindowLong is:
Declare Function SetWindowLong Lib "user32" Alias "SetWindowLongA"(
ByVal hWnd As Integer,
ByVal nIndex As Integer,[code]....
What is the reason for the error I get?

I'm trying to convert a VB6 project to .NET, but I get problems with some callback functions, and the following message comes up: "AddressOf' expression cannot be converted to 'integer' because integer is not a delegate type" I've seen several solutions to similar problems like this, but I am not able to understand this issue with delegates.
After the conversion, the code look like this:
Declare Function vsmsgwSetDataPackageCB Lib "vsmsgwW.dll" (ByVal PACKAGE As Integer, ByRef arg As Integer) As Integer
Dim arginitP As Integer
[Code]...
Which gives the error: Method 'Public Function PackageCB(HisNodeID As Integer, ByRef data() As Byte, ByVal length As Integer, ByRef arg As Integer) As Integer' does not have the same signature as delegate 'Delegate Function DelegatePackageCallback(hwnd As Integer, lparam As Integer) As Integer

I got 2 classes in a form, and I would like to pass a value from a textbox to the other class, so I decided to use Deligate.
Below is the code.
Public Delegate Sub delPassSize(ByVal text As TextBox)
'To get size from Class Calculate(Class 2)
Public Sub GetSize(ByVal txtForm1 As TextBox)
[code]....
and the error message is 'cls.Getsize is a delegate type and requires a single 'addressof' expression as the only argument to the constructor.'

I have the below code. What happens if the Upload method takes more than one minute for completion? Does the timer kick off another call to the Upload method immediately after one minute is over or Does it wait until the method finishes executing? I am implementing this as a windows service.
Protected Overrides Sub OnStart(ByVal args() As String)
Dim tmr As Timer = New Timer(New TimerCallback(AddressOf Upload), Nothing, 1000, 60000)
While Not tmr Is Nothing

I am exposing some ISO C++ data types to .Net (mono on Linux to be precise).For the purpose of brevity, I shall refer to C# in my question, although my question relates to all of the .Net languages (with C# and VB.Net being my target languages). So far, I have worked out how to expose the ISO C++ data types in C# class(es) for use in mono -The only problem so far is how to deal with the C++ callbacks. In .Net languages (C# and Vb.Net), I believe 'delegates' are the callback equivalent.
Sticking with C# for now, can anyone recommend a way that I can register the C# delegate functions with my ISO C++ code.The ISO C++ code is a notification library, and I want to be able to "push" the notifications to the mono framework (i.e. C# delegates in this case).My underlying assumption is that the mechanism/steps to implement this would be the same for the .Net languages - I'll just have to code the actual delegates in the .Net language of choice - is that assumption correct?Last but not the least, is the question of thread saftey. The underlying ISO C++ code that I am exposing to .Net (mono to be more specific), is both re-ntrant and thread safe - do I have to do anything "extra" to call .Net delegate from my ISO C++ code?

I'm using vb.net and have got the midi out functions working properly. I'm now looking to add midi in functionality to my project and I am confused about the use / syntax of MidiInOpen and the associated midiInProc placeholder function. I think I need to understand and use a Delegate function to point to my Midi in handling procedure but nothing works for me and I can't find a suitable example anywhere.
Does anyone have any advice or examples as to how to implement Midi In in vb.net using the Windows multimedia API please?

Say you wanted to set a status message
' Set status
ssMainMessages.Text = msgValidating
Then perform an action that requires a http request that takes around 5 seconds then you want to display the result of that
' Set status
ssMainMessages.Text = msgValidated
It will only always display the second message? Its like it jumps the first part of the code and goes straight to httprequest.even if you put the update,system,threading.thread.sleep ....

This is a mix of C# and VB.Net. I have a C# class with with 2 delegates:
public delegate string GetSettingDelegate(string key);
public event GetSettingDelegate GetSettingEvent;
public delegate void SetSettingDelegate(string key, string value);
public event SetSettingDelegate SetSettingEvent;
In a VB class I add handlers to the event:
AddHandler _gisCtrl.SetSettingEvent, AddressOf SetSetting
AddHandler _gisCtrl.GetSettingEvent, AddressOf GetSetting
When I try and remove the handlers:
RemoveHandler _gisCtrl.SetSettingEvent, AddressOf SetSetting
RemoveHandler _gisCtrl.GetSettingEvent, AddressOf GetSetting
SetSetting is OK but GetSetting throws a warning:
The AddressOf expression has no effect in this context because the method arguments to AddressOf requires a relaxed conversation to the delagate type of the event.
Here are the methods
[Code] .....
How to fix this and why it is thrown in the first place? The 2 delegates/events/methods look similar enough that I don't know why one is OK and one throws a warning.

I am opening frmB (variable for FormB - the actual form) from frmA. From btn1 I open frmB like this:
frmB = New FormB()
frmB.Show()
From btn2 (frmB is already open) I bring frmB to the front from behind frmA:
FormB.Show()
FormB.BringToFront().
No problem so far. Now I need to pass an arg to frmB. This is where I am having the problem.
from btn1 (in frmA) I do this:
frmB = New FormB(myArg) '--pass myArg to constructor of FormB -- no problem here
frmB.Show()
then from btn2 -- this is where I have the problem
FormB.Show()
FormB.BringToFront()
I tried placing myArg in FormB.Show(myArg) but that did not fix the problem. What is the correct way to pass myArg to FormB (frmB) in this scenario? Do I need to share FormB or frmB? How do I do this? "frmB" is frmA level variable.

I am using this exact code on another form in the same project without an issue, just with a different data source. Any ideas?
EDIT: Never mind, seems like it was a stupid naming scheme and VS was adding a bindingsource with a different name than I wanted.
