VS 2008 ArrayList - Make The Call To Get The Data Out Of The List?
Mar 31, 2009
My application reuses the same data returned from the database throughout the application. For example, a list of airport codes retrieved from the dataabase could be used on 5 different forms. In VB6 I placed the information into a Public Array. I'm looking for the best way to load and make available without hitting the database 5 times. After researching I found arraylist might be the way to go. My problem...I'm not sure I'm doing this correctly and not sure how to make the call to get the data out of the list.
What I am doing is iterating through all the groups that belong to the top group (Generic reports). Then I take advantage of the GroupPrincipal.GetMembers(True) which will recurse through a given group name. I test to see if the user exits under that group and if true I put the group name in an arraylist.
I use the for each principal in GroupPrincipal.GetMembers to loop through each returned user to see if they exist.
Is there a way to put all the returned users Principal.Name from a given group in GroupPrincipal.GetMembers into an ArrayList? This would allow me to to use Arraylist1.IndexOf to search for user. Which would be much faster then iterating through a returned list using the for each construct.
Sub RetAllMbrs(strUser As String) Dim oPC As PrincipalContext = GetPrincipalContext() '<- this is function somewhere else in the code
What I need to do is read an ArrayList in My.Settings and add another ArrayList to it. The first think I'm trying to do is load My.Settings.Records into myArrayList. I'm not quite sure on the proper way to do this. I've tried things such as Dim myArrayList As ArrayList = My.Settings.Records, I'm not sure if I need New and I'm not sure if I need .Clone or .CopyTo.
Then I have another ArrayList myArrayList2. To get this into myArrayList I've done: [Code] Then to save it back to My.Settings I've done. My.Settings.Records = myArrayList. The problem is I keep on getting Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on the AddRange line. My.Settings.Records is definitely an ArrayList and it will sometimes = Nothing. The objects will only ever be strings.
I have road runner (time warner) as my telephone service. I'm pretty sure you can't just go making free calls through the internet via custom software or every half-intelligent programmer would be making free phone calls.I would like to know if there is a way to make an outgoing call (on the same telephone line that your handset uses) and have a vocal conversation with someone on the computers microphone/(headphones/speakers) devices.
I have a function called DieRoll. In the function I have the following setup.
Dim objRandom as New Random Dim intRoll as Integer intRoll = objRandom.Next(1,7) Return intRoll
Everything works as expected as far as generating a random number (1 - 6) is concerned, except for one problem. If I have a series of calls to the function one after another, the numbers come up the same. Is there a way to make sure that each call to the function is much more random?
i got a background worker that has the following code in the do work.... one of the things i want to do is to add rows if theres none available ...but i got an error saying i need to do a safe call thread...i already read about it but im stuck i put control.invoke, but that gives me an error too saying Error1Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference.what can i do to add rows safely?
vb.net Private Sub BackgroundWorker2_DoWork(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.DoWorkEventArgs) Handles BackgroundWorker2.DoWork If DataGridView2.Rows.Item(num).Cells.Item(0).Value = "" Then Control.Invoke(DataGridView2.Rows.Add(1))
This is what I'm sure will be the first of many noob-ish questions from yours truly... I'm studying as a mature student for a Computing Degree (encompassing web design, hardware, programming and systems analysis). The programming seems to be my weak spot this year. I enjoyed C++ last year, doing basic console applications, but progamming visually with VB in Visual Studio 2008 I'm struggling!
I've got some code that creates a list of AD groups that the user is a member of, with the intention of saying 'if user is a member of GroupX then allow admin access, if not allow basic access'.
I was using a StringCollection to store this list of Groups, and intended to use the Contains method to test for membership of my admin group, but the problem is that this method only compares the full string - but my AD groups values are formatted as cn=GroupX, etc....
I want to be easily able to determine if a particular substring (i.e. 'GroupX') appears in the list of groups. I could always iterate through the groups check each for a substring representing my AD group name, but I'm more interested in finding out if there is a 'better' way.
Clearly there are a number of repositories for the list of Groups, and it appears that Generics (List(Of String)) are more commonly preferred (which I may well implement anyway) but there is no in-built means of checking for a substring using this method either.
I've settled on using a List(Of), and I've borrowed from Dan's code to iterate through the list.
How can i use the ProductID to compare and call out the corresponding Product Name and Selling Price column from the MsAccess Database and display in the second DGV?
In the code below there is a inparameter named thumbs to the function CreatePage. thumbs is an arraylist. My question is if you know if it's possible to split the arraylist thumbs into parts of 15 and call the function with thumbs(1-15), thumbs(16-30), thumbs(31-45) and so on. Until the arraylist is empty.
I have a DataColumn and call the MaxLength Property on it to get the length of data that can go into a field ... but it always returns -1 (yes even on a string field).
I want it so every time I click an ITEM in the Listbox it displays ALL the data into the textbox. I know there's an easy way using table adapters and binding the listbox, but I'd prefer to do it this way for my project.
ok so this is what im trying to do. I want to export a list will all valid emailsThis is what I have in my list viewo when I press export List I want all items to be valid on be saved in a Txt file.I tried
vb.net for Each Valid in Listview1.items(0).subitemrichtextbox1.text = listview1.items(0).subitem("Valid").textnext
I am working on a Card game, and i have a little question. I want to put all the cards in a array or list. The problem is that the list need to be shuffled/randomised. But it should also be able to shrink. Witch of those 2 is better to use? And how can i shuffle them?
I am creating a program in Visual Basic 2008 and I would like it so when I check a check box, the word that corresponds with the check box (in the code) will show up in the text box. So if i had one check box that said, Hello. Whenever that check box was clicked the word, Hello, would show up in the Text box. And then if I checked another check box, Bye, the word Bye would show up right below Hello. So it would look something like this.
Hello Bye
But whenever I unchecked the check for hello, the word hello would go away and Bye would move to the top of the text box. Here is the code that I have so far. I can make the words appear in the text box but not at the same time in the list.
Public Class Form1 Private Sub CheckBox1_CheckedChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles CheckBox1.CheckedChanged If CheckBox1.Checked = True Then
I need to summarize data from an arraylist in vb. For example, I have a list of dates with different times. I want to summarize the dates and be able to display the times when I click on each date.I am new to vb, and I am struggling with this. I am able to read the file(ofd) with this info but I can't get it summarize, instead I am showing the date multiple times.

I have a program for school project that has input fields for Name, Address, City, State and Zip. I need to error check so that the fields are not empty.I have used If statements that check to see if the fields are empty and shows a message box if they are but if I leave the whole form empty and click the button that activates it, all the if statements go- one by one instead of pausing for the user to input the required data. How do I check for data and make the program stay there until the data is input? I have tried TRY/CATCH but it won't catch this type of error.

How can I read data from a .csv file I have opened into a variable for later use (i.e. plotting with zedgraph)? My csv file contains 100+ columns and 12000+ rows of data, with each column a different variable.
I've searched around a ton on this subject, and combined many methods I found on the net to my project but none actually do what I am required to do.
