VS 2008 : Closing Form Inside The Thread?
Sep 4, 2009
1. I am closing the form which started the thread inside the thread. There are no errors , but Is it safe ?
2. The thread starts at click of a button . If same button is clicked again , the thread is aborted. Should the thread be made Background or foreground ? it is working either way.
my code :
Private Sub BtnOk_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles BtnOk.Click
m_Thread = New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf MyFunction)
m_Thread.IsBackground = True

I have form1 and form2. A button on Form1 calls a thread background process (below). That process processes the command and when its done should close form2. I'm opening form2 within the current thread but trying to close it in the background thread. This is because if i close it in the current thread it closes immediately. I included the 2 functions below and what I have tried in the inline comments. Form2 is a simple form, basically just an animated gif. It is to show the user that something is happening(like a status bar) then close when its complete. I tried running different priorities instead of different threads but due to the results threading seems to behave the best. I'd like to keep access to both forms during the process, the pc, and screen refreshes realtime.[code]

Form1 is a mdi container. It has a bunch of forms that can load inside of it as mdi children. If I close each open form inside the form1, and then click the red X at the top right, application exits fine.If I click the red X without closing the forms inside I get: An unhandled exception of type 'System.CannotUnloadAppDomainException' occurred in mscorlib.dll
Additional information: Error while unloading appdomain. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131015) However I can break from it. How do I get the application to not show that error? What must I do to fix those inside forms or close when the red x is clicked?

The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?

In my program I have a thread in the background that runs an infinite while loop. If I want to terminate the thread, I break the while loop, and the thread runs to a stop. However, if close the form without stopping the thread, it just keeps running. I tried both aborting the thread and exiting the while loop in the closing form method, but without succes.

I seem to have a problem in finding a solution to threads.I am opening a .PDF file via an <iframe> using vb.net. Then the file is opened, it is then moved to another location. But for some reason I am unable to move the file because it "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." The only way round it i have found is to kill the process for Adobe Acrobat, so the file is released. Even if i fill the iframe with something else.How would I close the file, and stop that particular file from being accessed before the move ?

I have 2 forms. When a user clicks something on form1, form2 pops up. After user is done with form2 and closes it (where the dataset is updated), I want form1 to "reload" the dataset to reflect changes made in form2.

I am working on a program and for some reason when I run it as an executable outside of debug mode, if I run the main subroutine of the program, the process remains in memory after being closed. Even though the form is closed/gone, it will be in the process list and I have to ctl-alt-del to remove it. If I exit right after opening the form without doing anything, it closes like normal. I am closing and disposing everything I can think of, and I've never had this problem before. This is how I am exiting, but the problem also occurs if the user "X's" out.
Me.Close()
Application.Exit()
I have a couple web file requests in my program, which is the only thing out of the ordinary (code-wise) for me, don't know if those are the root of the problem. I can't imagine this is the first time this has happened to anyone, but I couldn't find anything helpful with my search terms. Any ideas/common solutions? I can post sections of my code if it will help, but the whole thing is pretty long and I couldn't narrow down any potential problem areas.

Is there a way to prevent the form closing event from executing if validation fails on a control? If validation on a control fails this stops the form from closing, but the closing event still executes. Scenario is user has focus in a text box, tries to close the form. Validation fails, but closing event is fired. I'm not sure how I can abort that event.

I have a modal form that does double duty.When a user wants to add a new object to a database, I open the form blank and they fill it out. When the form closes, all of the data is passed back to my main form and is used to create the new object in the database.When a user wants to edit an existing object, I open the form and pre-populate all of the fields with the object's data.I'm running checks on the form as they edit the fields, only enabling the "OK" button (which will update the database) if the form has actually been changed. If they make a change and then undo it, the "OK" button is reset to Enabled = False.At the bottom of the form are a ComboBox, two buttons and a ListBox. The intent is to allow the user to select an item from the ComboBox and "Add" ("Add" button) to the ListBox, or select an item in the ListBox and "Remove" ("Remove" button) it FROM the ListBox.
This function works fine when the form is loaded blank.When the form is loaded with data, however, (and in the testing I've done, the ListBox has no items in it to start, which is valid), adding an item from the ComboBox to the ListBox causes the Modal form to close with a DialogResult of Cancel.I've tried to trace the source of this issue, but stepping through each line in debug mode gives me no clue as to why this is happening.I COULD remove all of the checks and update the form each time the user presses "OK" (in the case of no changes, the database data would be overwritten with the same data), but that seems kludgy and less elegant. Plus, I'd like this logic to work.

It is my goal to write a program to run a retail store. I am an intermediate Access developer, so I have a good grasp of the basics.However, I find that developing in VB 2010 is quite different.I will have forms for:
Company Information
Employee Information
Supplier Information
Customer Information
Invoices & Purchase Orders
All I really need to know at this point is the code to open and close each form.

Is there any way I can find the exact reason a form is closing ? To be more specific , I'd like to find when a form is closing :1) because the user pressed the X button on the upper right corner2) due to code (Me.Close , MyForm.Close etc)I know I can use the FormClosing event and use this code :If e.CloseReason = CloseReason.UserClosing Thenhowever it seems that the CloseReason.UserClosing catches both cases (closed by te X button or by code) . So , is there any way I can find exactly the reason a form is closing ?Back in VB6 , the correspondent UnloadMode variable of the Form_Unload event could be "vbFormCode" which indicated specifically that the form was closed by code

My "form1" is just a simple page with buttons that launch different forms which do all the work, the "form1" code for the first four buttons is below. What I want is for each form to run in a separate thread.
Public Class Main
Private Sub btnDownLoadStockPrices_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnDownLoadStockPrices.Click
LoadStocksFromDownloadSite.Visible = True
End Sub
[Code]...
I've found plenty of code examples to have different buttons on a single form run a subroutine in a separate thread, but for some reason I can't seem to apply it to an entire form.I think it's something simple, like I need to tie each new thread as a handle to each forms "load" routine, but I just can't get it to work. I don't care about "synchronizing" threads at all, as each form is really a completely different functional program.

I'm using a printcreen function where I use X and Y to set where the screenshot will be taked. But the problem is that it uses the X and Y from the entrie screen. I only want it to use it inside the form.E.g the 0, 0 shouldn't be the in the top left corner of the screen, it should be the top left corner of the form.

Ok so my main form takes around 5 seconds to load i can't make it so that my load subs are on a seperate thread because too many cross thread calls being made besides i want a splash screen anyway i want a splash screen on a seperate thread that can update status while main thread is loading this way main thread carries the load subs and invokes status label changes in the splash form which is on another thread
this is my code
Dim SPForm As SplashForm
Public Sub LoaderSub(ByVal Splashed As Boolean)
If Splashed = False Then
[Code]...
what happens is the splash form shows and so does the main form but they both lag for 5 seconds (as if they are both on main thread) how do i make it so that the splash form loads from the new thread? I thought the way i did it that's what should happen...
EDIT: also why did code wraps failed to show proper vb code?

I am using Visual Studio 2010 and have been slowly getting into threading. My current project has a form with a button that in turn starts two threads. The form itself has two labels on it that are used to display the progress of the computations. Each thread has a delegate defined to change the value of the respective label (as the labels are not defined in the thread, but on the form itself). The threads call subs from a separate class. All of the calculations work flawlessly. My problem is that the labels do not visually update. Through use of message boxes at the end of each loop, I know that the label text property is, indeed, being changed, but it is not actually refreshing and updating on screen.
My delegate code is as follows (I grabbed this code off of another forum where people had the same issue - it seemed to work for them, but not for me):
Private Delegate Sub UpdatePMLabelTextDelegate(ByVal s As String)
Private Sub UpdatePMLabelText(ByVal s As String)
' Are we in the same thread as the label itself?

just wondering if it is possible to have a form and then load up a control on that form but so it runs in a different thread to its parent... i tried:
[Code]...
But it still seemed to be running on the form's thread And just so you know ctlMTTest is just a control that has a button on it, that, when you click the button, a loop runs.

I'm not sure exactly how to describe this. In VB6, there was a Timer command. I could create a variable of type Timer and loop until the current value for Timer exceeded the initial plus a given amount of time. This allowed me to update form variables while the timing loop was executing. How can I do something similar in .NET?
Here is a sample of the VB6 code:
Code:
Dim StartTimer As Double
StartTimer = Timer
Do
