I'm going to start delving into maths in vb Now want I want to do is convert the distance between two coordinates. I've found this linke below on the web. Does anyone have a link to good tutorial for this conversion?
View 7 Repliesi have to develop a software for payroll where in the employee wants to give magnetic strip cards to employees i have done teh reading part which is quite simple but my prob. is they have a Zebra P330i printer the printing on the card front and back is fine but writing the data on magnetic strip is casuing a prob. ~1 and then what i want to write but when i type this it just prints on the front of the card nothing inside the card.

View 6 RepliesI want to place two radio buttons in so I can select one of them to use one formula, and then select the other to use another formula. I want to use the I=P(1+r)^n formula and I=P(1-r)^n formula with the radio button text showing Appreciation and Depreciation.

My question is how can I translate the plain text which the user enters i.e 3*(2+4) to a maths command so that VB can display the answer?

View 2 RepliesI ve done the main main page which includes a button which when pressed will go on the next page etc etc.
The problem that i am facing with is the concept behind creating the main function of the game.
I.e. Once the main screen comes up it will show a formulae eg 3 + 3. After the forumale is shown the user will input the answer and then when they want to go to the next question that click the next button which inturn shows a different question if the answer is correct, if not it will stay on the same forumale. I would also like to add a skip button that will allow the user to skip the question if they cant figure it out.
So yeah my main issue is programming it ( i mean i can add buttons and program them to link to places (and show messages) but that is all lol) .

Suppose i want to draw semi-random ellipses on my form.Is there any way i can check if they get clicked at a later stage?Is there any way of storing the location of individual ellipses and then comparing the mouse-click to my list of locations to see if one was clicked?
I can imagine how it could be done with squares or rectangles, but i dont know how to approach it with ellipses.
Im sure this has been asked before, but i've spent a good while searching around for something i can use and came up emptyhanded.

The problem i am having is that if for example the first value is 11 and the second value is 10, when i divide 11 by 10 the result is 1. I have tried setting the output format to have 2 decimal places but it still displays 1 instead of 1.1. [Code]

For my coursework, I am making a maths quiz which allows the teacher to add or edit questions and solutions. then these solutions and quetsions form a quiz that students can access.But I dont know how to allow the teacher to use the weird maths symbols. The quiz is only going to be about algebra so no complex symbols are required, I saw some of these symbols in unicode. But dont know how to make that symbol appear in textbox which the teacher is going to use to enter questions etc.

View 1 RepliesI would like to develop an application that involves a lot of tables and maths, and then displaying the results. I can visualize how this would work in SQL, as far as creating the stored procedures and tables required, however the front facing application would be a completely new experience to me.I would probably be sharing the built application with friends, but completely as a no profit tool. I assume that the developer edition of dot net is a suitable option? My main query is, is dot net really the best way to develop this tool? I have a strong feeling that I will not be able to use SQL as this would require a server to be run, and this is not practical. Can the tables be implemented into a DLL or similar to be used by the application for example?

I want to make a program that will track Do Not Rent (DNR) People.I'm a intremediate vb6 programmer and have not coded in a long time.I do have and wanting to do this on VS2008 professional in VB2008.I did a simular program from a vb6 book about 12 years ago. it was a address book that i changed a little to add some things I needed it to keep track of, and it saved everything in a text file.I want to know what the pros and cons are for using a text file? xml file? or a data base?the data i be keeping track of will be vital statistics as name, state id number, id type, ect. and a picture of the id from a scanner or import from a .png, .jpg, or tiff image.If i use a data base file either Access 2007, MySQL, or SQL 2005/2008 file, do i need to have Office, MySQL, SQL 2005/2008 programs installed on the the computer im doing the programming on? do i need to have the above programs installed on the target computer?i do not think a txt file will work for me because of the picture i want to keep with the data not seperatly. So to make it a little more clear I want to be able to add, append/update, not to be able to delete a record, and be able to search the file for a record.I want to be able to navigate the records or file with first, previous, next, and last. each record will be showed seperatly.I would like to have a STATUS (lol thingy) that only my wife or I can change but let my employees be able to enter the rest of the information on there own. the STATUS Levels will be like 1st warning, 2nd warning, 3rd warning, DNR, and Rentable at our discression. I want it to only allow changes to status if they have the proper password. so i do not know if this also elimates txt files or xml files as an option.and when the wife, my employees or I make an entry I wanted it to add the time and date with the comments we entered in with the initials of the person whom entered the data. so i was thinking i will need to have security levels in my program and give each person a password so the program can fill out most small data itself.
if i do decide to use a database file to store the data, picture, and employee information can it be done with 1 table, or should i try to seperate the data in seperate tables? should i use one to one or one to many? I do not think one to many would be the best solution? it been like 12 years since I did any database programming in school and it was dBase3. If u think it be best to use multiple tables could u give me an example as to how to seperate the data.The client info would be like a address book with a picture and a comment box that will automatically add a date/timestamp and the users initials with a space between every updated or appended entry., and the employees would have there login in name and password, and initials.I was thinking of making a wizard to enter the data in for both employees and the DNR's as for people changing the date on the computer and entering info so to make it look they entered data on an earlier date I was thinking of having it log onto the internet time server and setting the date/time of the computer in the background as it loads up.
I would like my application to respond to when the user press the media keys on his keyboard. Anyone know how to make my application capture this when it's in the background.

What is the best was to get the stream from the USB swipe card reader, build by Magtek, and then just pull the 9 digits I need? I have currently been using an Excel macro that searches the Excel document, but I want to get away from this system and make it more user friendly.
View 3 RepliesI need to be able to print ID cards with magnetic stripes. This is a simple matter of putting special code characters in the text to print. I can print text to the card printer from Notepad, and the printer knows to encode the stripe. This even works printing from a report in Access, but not from a Crystal report from a VB.NET app, and not from the PrintDocument object. All these do is print the information to be encoded on the front of the card. So I need to be able to print these from a VB.NET app, but not using CR or PrintDocument.
View 1 RepliesWe have the customers credit card number on file which we use simply to identify them when they swipe at our computer. The problem i'm running into is that when they swipe their card in the card reader (Magtek mini usb) it outputs the data as ASCII which looks something like %B followed by the credit card number in whatever textbox i have the program focused on. I'm sure i could just search the textbox for any 16 character number string and assume that is their card number, but i was just curious if there is some best practice to decript the ASCII output from the magnetic card reader.

View 1 RepliesI have created a program in Visual Basic using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional. There is a textbox that I use in the program that when the focus is placed on it will take the data encoded on a magnetic striped card such as a driver's license or any card that has this kind of data encoded magnetically. Very simple to get the data as the program takes all of it upon the swipe without having to do really anything, however, the problem is that I don't know which declaration to use when the swipe has stopped - or the last character has been entered. Currently I am using TextBox1_textChanged as my declaration, but that is called every time each character is put into the text box. When you are swiping, this is an ongoing process until the last character is put in. So if I have a magentic card with 10 characters in it, this method will be called 10 times. Is there a declaration that I can use that only fires off whent he swipe has loaded all of the characters or some kind of loop that I can incorporate?
