VS 2008 Field Names Of A SqlDataReader Object?
Mar 2, 2010
I want to write a routine that loads a table (or query) and outputs it to a text file, with the field names in the first row.If I load the data via an adaptor class into a datatable, I can access the field names by something like DataTab.Columns(i).ColumnName.
As I only want to read the data from the table, using SqlDataReader would be more efficient. But how can I then find what the header or column names are? The following code fails with a message that the SqlDataReader class does not have a member called 'Columns ':
Dim sqlCmd As SqlClient.SqlCommand = New SqlCommand(SQL, Connection)
Connection.Open()
Dim Reader As SqlClient.SqlDataReader = sqlCmd.ExecuteReader()
Dim FName0 As String = Reader.Columns(0).ColumnName() '<==FAILS
Is there a way to find the column names of an SqlDataReader object?

I posted in the Database development forum, but no bites. I have field names in my Access table which have a number as the first character (i.e. "2x2"). Evidently, the DataAdapter doesn't like this. I'm able to view the data in a DataGridView, but I get an exception when I use DataAdapter.Update.
Can I modify my sql statement to make the command builder work or do I have rename the fields?
For example:
"SELECT [2x2] as twoBytwo..."
Changing the names of the fields would be a huge pain-in-the-arse!

I`m bussy building a ORM for our applications.I don`t want to use all of microsoft data functions like ADO.NET and Datasets because i would like to understande the base and manipulate data by code. I also want to make it later work like building a database out of the code in stead of the other way around.
I have build a simple appliacation inside VB.NET with a dataset and ADO.NET Entity.. When loading 250.000 records into objects it takes about 4.5 second. I`m using datareader to load a record of a database into a object dynamicly. I started at 15 seconds,later 8 and nu 6.5 seconds for the total amount of records.I started with TmpObject.ColumnName = Reader ("ColumnName"), later i figured out Reader.GetValues(TmpObjectArray) in combination with TmpObject.ColumnName = TmpObjectArray(0) is faster. Now i tought if i can set the properties as pointer to a object array so the values are placed onto the object instead of on a different object before it could be faster.
' PropertyArray
Dim tPropertyArray()
As PropertyInfo = tProperties.Values.ToArray[code]......

I'm trying to get the list of field names for a given table, to turn them into a string which I can to post back as a variable to another function.I've Googled loads of stuff regarding GetSchemaTable but all I seem to be able to output are field parameters, but not the actual value of these parameters (ie ColumnName, which is the one I actually want!)
Found this page; What is the SQL command to return the field names of a table?But all the queries on there give me an error "You do not have access to Table 'Columns'"I feel sure this is pretty simple, can someone give me a little function that will simply give me fieldNames = "fieldName1, fieldName2, etc"I am using a MySQL server and ODBC connections ASP.NET using VB.

It is not so hard to get the field names from a database via GetOleDbSchemaTable and OleDbSchemaGuid.Columns. It works fine. The field names come i alphabetical order though. I really need them in the correct field no order.
Used code:
connection.Open()
Dim schemaTable As DataTable = _
connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable(OleDbSchemaGuid.Columns, New Object() {Nothing, Nothing, tblname, Nothing})
[Code].....

create a mailing list of my students with the usual lastname, firstname, address, city, state, etc. This all works fine - except that I'm getting multiple records for the same family when they have more than one children in our database. So, ideally, I would like to be able to group by the family name (which is grouped in a seperate Family table then linked to the student table by familyid), then in the second field list each child of that family separated by a comma.

I'm trying to produce a repeater showing amounts of money taken by various payment types into a table.Payment types available come from a global settings file as an array, I am creating a dataTable by looping this list and extracting sales reports (there might be a more efficient way than this loop, but this is not my concern at the minute).My question: How do I bind this to a repeater and display it when I dont necessarily know the table column namesI've tried various methods to give the table a header row and give the columns numerical names from a for > next loop, but am either getting no results, orystem.Data.DataRowView' does not contain a property with the name '7'. < or whatever numberThis is where I currently am:
EDIT: JUST REALISED MY CODE WAS AWFUL, SO UPDATED:
Dim paymentTable As New DataTable("paymentTable")
For j = 0 To UBound(paymentTypes)

My code where errors occurred:
strSQL = "select * from transactions where TransactionID='" + txtTransactionID.Text + "'"
ReaderQuery(strSQL)
While dr.Read

The weird thing about this, is that when I first run it, I was able to Bind it to all the Textbox and thought everything went smoothly, but when I run it again without any changes in that code, that error suddenly appears... sometimes that error went to other dr.item(""

Is it possible to construct the name of an object (in this case, a Panel control) at runtime?
What I want to do is change the Backcolor of one Panel that is a member of about fifty panels. I can get the string of the name from the Sender in a RadioButton CheckedChanged event. So what I want to do is something like:
PanelName = sender.parent.name & ".BackColor"
PanelName = Color.Red
(I realize that the syntax above is invalid. I'm just using it to try to get the idea across.)
I can do what I need with big, fifty-element Select Case blocks, but the code is so repetitive that I was hoping there was a more elegant way.

I'm trying to create an export Excel/CSV function that will iterate through a custom object and first output the property names and then output the values. I want to use reflection only where necessary so I'm attempting to save the property names when I output the headers and then reuse them to print the values. Is this possible? I'm a little weary of using reflection in a loop but is there a better way?

There are issue with using WebBrowser late bind calls related to object/property names generation.For example:
WebBrowser1.Document.DomDocument.Forms.Myform.mycontrol.Value = "test"
will fail with more than one instance of the WebBrowser control.what actually happen is that mycontrol object become Mycontrol and compiled vb.net application will fail with error
Member not found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80020003 (DISP_E_MEMBERNOTFOUND))
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.LateBinding.LateGet(Object o, Type objType,
String name, Object[] args, String[] paramnames, Boolean[] CopyBack)[code].....
Same code will work with vb6 app with multiple WebBrowser controls
Edit: This code is comipled with: Option Strict Off

I've created the beginnings of my new web application, but I am often coming up against the issue that ASP.NET renames elements IDs or in the case of form fields, their names.I have a form which is basically a sales system. It is essentially made up of two User Controls, one is a form for Customer Details (name, address etc) and the second is a form for the customer's purchases, it consists of a number lines dynamically created by Javascript created as you list the items the customer is purchasing. Both these sections are User Controls because they are to be used for other areas of the system where this data will need to be recalled/re-entered.When the USer Control is loaded, the field which contains the Customers' Name is renamed "m$mainContent$customerForm$name" I understand where this comes from, "m" is the ID of my Master Page, "mainContent" is the main Content Placeholder and "customerForm" is the name of the User Control.
In fact, in my case, this will always remain the same on all forms, so it is relative easy to overcome... but... suppose it wasn'tI can see there are ways I could deal with this with Javascript, but the form doesn't need an AJAX submit, a normal Post will do fine for this, so when I open up the recieving page I want to call Request.Form("name")% to save the customer's name into the database, but of course I really need Request.Form("m$mainContent$customerForm $name")%How would I dynamically extract those prefixes from the posting form to ensure that if I rename anything or use it in a different scenario, the problem will not break it?I am using .NET 2.0, so can't use Static Client.

Here's my json:
{"d":{"key1":"value1",
"key2":"value2"}}
Is there any way of accessing the keys and values (in javascript) in this array without knowing what the keys are?
The reason my json is structured like this is that the webmethod that I'm calling via jquery is returning a dictionary. If it's impossible to work with the above, what do I need to change about the way I'm returning the data?
Here's an outline of my webmethod:
<WebMethod()> _
Public Function Foo(ByVal Input As String) As Dictionary(Of String, String)
Dim Results As New Dictionary(Of String, String)

I'm trying to create a form that accepts names (or any strings) as input and stores them in a object. See attached form sample.Form Image:
Operations: ï Initially the NumericUpDown object on the form should be disabled.The user enters a value (string) in the textbox and clicks the Add button or presses the Enter key to activate that button.The application then stores that name in a List object, and displays the last entry in the Label underneath.The NumericUpDown should become enable after the first entry. The user should be able to move between all the values entered using NumericUpDown.

I am attempting to deep clone many of my objects via serialization. Most of it works fine, except when the original object has event handlers for their events. Then the holders of the event handlers are being cloned as well. Anyways, from web browsing it appears the right way is avoid cloning the events. However, you cannot put <NonSerialized> in front of an event declaration, but the C guys seem to get around this by writing [field: NonSerialize] (I guess directing the program to the underlying field, over my head). What is the VB .Net code equivalent to this, as I can't find it?
