VS 2008 Fulltrust For Network Application?

Feb 8, 2011

On the earlier version of VB.net 2003, I could run a wizard to give full trust to a .Net application on the network. With VB.net 2008, there is no longer a wizard to do this. I did some Googling and most of the references I find refer to using Caspol for .Net 2.0. That doesn't seem to be an option .net 3.5 (I can't find Caspol in the framework folder). Does anyone know how to do this for VB.net 2008?

VS 2008 Network App - Send Message Or Network Package To Some Of The Clients In The Network

Aug 18, 2009

Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:

For what it's worth, the application is targeting .NET 2.0 Framework on both the development side and package install side.

The illustration below is more for my sake than yours, but should help me explain the problem.

User A and B work just fine, but when User C and User D attempt to use the program via shortcut9(same as User A and B) the error below is displayed.

what I can do to allow User C and D to use the application?

VS 2008 Changing The Datasource So That Application Will Run On A Machine With No Network?

Oct 14, 2009

I have created an application which uses an sql server connection as its datasource. The problem I'm having is that the application needs to work on computer that has no network connection. How Can i change the datasource so that on runtime it can work off a machine that is not connected to a network? The datasource from the sql connection only contains one table with no data. It only needs to be updated with a target folder that can be changed to any location on any computer already written in the code.

The connection string suddenly stands as: Dim MyConnectionString As String = "Data Source=MY-PC;Initial Catalog=ImageLocs;User Id=test;Password=test;Pooling=False"

Application Path Over Network

Jul 28, 2011

I have an application in vb.net that runs over a network. Actually shortcut of the exe file is shared over LAN, so databases remain on one computer where the application has been installed. Everything works great except one thing. The logo of this application is saved in a database, that reports can pick to load picture. The logo file is chosen by the user, using OpenFileDialog and then saved in database. It is saved like D: Picturesfilename. jpg When I run the application from network (using shortcut that we have made to the main exe file), it given error on D:Picturesfilename.jpg because this doe not exits in the system that is running the shortcut. How to save the logo path in a way that it always finds it in application directory, when run over the network.

Client-side Vs Network Application In VB?

May 27, 2009

I have a client-side app which I am working on. As I start to enhance the app, I am starting to wonder whether or not I should be building a network side app instead. My app in its current form sits on the client side and generates some text and XML files which are stored locally on the client side. The user reads/write to these files. However, I want to start working with SQL AND the processing time of my app is starting to consume resources (i.e. time and CPU) on the client side.

Can someone provide me with some highl level feedback on what one would do to make their client-side app a network app that multiple users would have access to. I realize more detail would need to be provided in order to provide thorough answer. However at this point, I really just want to understand how a network app would differ from a client app from a programminga and deployment perspective. This is not necessarily a VB question. Howevever since I am working in VB I though I would start in this forum. Feel free to move to the appropriate forum if need be.

Log Into Application With Windows Network Authentication?

Jul 22, 2011

Our company runs Windows Server 2008 R2 and as part of the normal login procedure you type your username and password. IT sets the domain when you get your PC so that is all good. So, when you open IE, the intranet sight detects that you are person XXX YYY and then logs you into the site automatically as the right person.

Now is there any way that I can do the same with an application written in C# or VB.NET. I.e., I would like the user to not have to log in as they have already done so during Windows log in, and then use the application as the individual user. This is for loggin purposes and specific rights for each group.

Automatically Updating Application From Network Share

Any simple way of automatically updating a newer version of my application from a network share. Everything I have read pertains to an update from a web site. This is possibly a simple thing to do but as I have 6-8 users using the application I have to email them all stating there is a new version on the share and for them to copy and overwrite the existing application executable in the program filesapp directory. If this could be done on launching the program within the splash screen that would be fantastic.

Real-time Application Communication Over A Network?

May 2, 2011

I am starting a new project in VB, a card game modelled to be similar to a real card game.

I have the majority of the program planned out and have even started coding parts of it; my problem comes with the networking. This is a real-time card game (not turn-based) and I want to be able to play with real people (family mostly, so over LAN is what I'm after).

I have tried searching for code samples but I everything I have found seems more complicated than I feel is required for the task, introducing a lot of new concepts and not explaining them.

What I'm after is a simple way to exchange the information in real-time, I don't care so much for efficiency (at the moment) just ease of use - though if I need to wade through a heap of documentation I will. A perfect answer would tell me what the names of some of the controls/methods that would be appropriate are, even if it just re-affirms a bit of the complexity, you do not have to detail anything if you don't want to I just feel a bit at loss as to what exactly it is I am looking for!

Now the problem is, some of the managers need to go out frequently(for business tour and all) and they need access to this software. The software is already installed in their laptops. Is there any way to access the database that is in our company server ???

We have few static IPs with us, is there any way i can use that here (Using NAT in the firewall or something)?

Finished A Console Application And Deployed It To Several Computers On Our Network For Testing

Dec 17, 2011

I have recently finished a console application and deployed it to several computers on our network for testing. As it is just an EXE a copied to the hard drives of selected computers for now. When the app is launched it writes info to an sql DB so I always know which computers it is on.

During the past few weeks I have modified this app at least 6 times (improvements, adjustments, etc)

It is a paint to keep going back to the computers to update it with the new version, and getting mixed up which version i am on - LOL I am looking for advice on how I would go about doing this automatically, for example, it would be cool if I just had to put an updated file in a repositry and clients would use this to update.

In Visual Studio, when I view the properties of my application>assembly information - I can set a file version. Is it possible to extract this info and store it in a variable? I would like to dump the in my DB. Also I could then possibly compare the file version of the launched app against an updated file in a network share folder.

Sleep For PacketSize/Bandwidth Amount Of Duration For A Network Application In VB?

Sep 20, 2011

I would like to sleep for packetSize/Bandwidth amount of duration for a network application in VB. This value varies from "10^-3 - 10^-6" seconds. When I use the Sleep() func, I think it is not sleeping for the duration if it is less than unity (< 1 sec ~~ 0 sec??).

Edited:I have to keep sending packets after a short nap of above range. So, I could not specify, for eg., to sleep for 0.001 milli seconds at the client side.My requirement is for the client side of CS app, which reads a file and keeps sending small packets at regular or irregular interval of sleeps to the Server. The Server, later, captures the packets and processes it at its own rate..

Server-client Type Application That Allows Network Administrator To Perform Tasks

Feb 14, 2012

I am creating a server-client type application that allows the network administrator to perform tasks on remote computers by using TCP sockets (TCPClient and TCPListener). The server application needs to send out a message to a client machine (with client application installed) and from this, the client application will send back the required data (i.e. system info, task progress etc). This part works fine. However, I am having trouble in getting the client application to constantly listen for an information request in the background. It should be listening whenever the application is running. What I want to do is to have an event handler which, when a message comes through, acts upon the instructions to send the relevant information back. The server does not need to constantly listen for data, as it will only receive data after it has sent a request.

Deploying Desktop Application With SQL Server Express As Backend Db On Local Area Network

May 28, 2009

Basically back in VB6 days, I created several VB6 apps with Access as the backend database. I'd package my Access db file with the application setup, which copied it on to a shared network drive, and then different computers on the LAN could use the same backend database file, and that worked just fine. With SQL and VB .Net, I've done work with a SQL database hosted on a remote server, so you can basically build your query string easily and anyone can connect to it from anywhere, and it works just fine. However, what I'd like to do is have a local SQL express database as the backend for a VB .Net application and make a setup program that can install it in a way that it could be shared on a Local area network, without the user who is installing the application do anything.

I know about building a connection string with the local machine name, but I don't really have any experience with including an actual MDF file with the application. Does anyone know how it works, and is it a better approach? Does it work similar to placing an access file in a shared unc path?I know that ClickOnce (which is awesome) can install SQL express easily on a user's machine. However, the key is that I want SQL express to be installed only on the machine that is going to be the database server in a LAN enviornment, and not on every machine, unless it is neccesseary. And then how does your VB app know how to build the connection string to access the database from any machine on the local share?
