VS 2008 Option To Serializing A Non-Inheritable Third-Party API Class?
Jul 19, 2011
this is an interesting problem and to be honest, I'm not sure there's a solution to it. But thought I'd ask the brain-trust here and see what comes up.I'm developing a dll that is loaded and ran within a third-party application. The third-party company provides an API to use that leverages their application's internal objects so that I can automate our processes. It's really pretty slick. They have a class object that represents the internal structure of their supported documents, appropriately titled Database. I would like to serialize the Database class using the ConfigurationConverterBase (to create a TypeConverter for conversion to and from) in conjunction with custom configuration elements and properties to store this information and retrieve when necessary. I've created the converter and all the necessary code for the custom configuration process. And it all works like a charm with one exception... the Database object does not have the Serializeable attribute applied.
Since I don't have control over the API they developed, I cannot simply add it. And since it is sealed, I cannot inherit it. This leaves me with an ugly option of converting the document to a temporary file that is a text-based version of it, then streaming it into memory before creating a binary format that can be saved into the config file. This is an ugly approach, but will get the job done.
Does anyone know how to work around the original issue for a more streamlined approach?

Here is what I have in my file
Option Strict On
Imports MyNameSpace.MyEnum
Public Class AwesomeClass
[Code].....
But since MyEnum isn't defined in the subclass it won't work. I am not very familiar with what these types of things are called, but I think that I am import a type definition of sorts. Since I am Importing, and not defining, it is only available in the first file. Basically, I want to include MyEnum as part of the class but I don't how to do it. I don't want to copy/paste it over, and I don't really want to write Imports ... at the top of all of my subclasses.

I am looking for a serial port component for .NET that overcomes the issues with the built-in Serial Port component related to sudden unplugging of USB-to-RS232 adapters, and suspension of the computer while the port is open. (Untrappable errors occurring after the the device is unplugged or the computer comes back after being suspended.)I have been using Richard Grier's solution, but I still have problems when resuming from suspend. Is there a 3rd party component that you would recommend? I have tried several, and each have their shortcomings. Ideally I'd like a drop-in replacement for the standard serial port, but I'll take whatever I can get.
Edit: It turns out that upgrading to .NET 4 and using the serial class works fine on XP, but does not work on Windows 7.

I am having problems with serializing and de serializing my objects. The following is my code for serializing buttons and labels which I have in my form.
Dim nodes As New List(Of nodeclass)
Dim objStreamWriter As New StreamWriter(filelocation)
For Each btn As Button In myNodeBtns
Dim u As New nodeclass
[code].....
I get an error: There is an error in XML document (20, 3).Now I have found out that this is because I have 2 root elements and 2 xml declerations. When I save the xml for the button and te xml for the label in 2 different files, I have no problem. However I have no idea how to go about saving the xml for both of them in the same file and deserializing it back.

I am trying to create a load and save function for my customizable Menu/Tool/StatusStrip controls (see signature). Those three controls use a single AppearanceControl class, which is mainly just a large list of properties (Colors) which control the colors of the Menu/Tool/StatusStrip.
I want to be able to save and load the values of these properties so the user can store them and load others with ease. Serialization seemed the obvious answer, although I never used it before.
Now, there is a slight problem that I cannot serialize Colors, so I simply gave each Color property the XmlIgnore attribute, and created an Integer property that gets and sets the Color property (using Color.ToArgb and Color.FromArgb). This way I can serialize the color properties succesfully.
Then, there is another problem. The properties are not all in the AppearanceControl class. Instead, the AppearanceControl class has a large number of subclasses, which in turn contain the color properties.
As a small example, I may have this:
vb.net
Public Class AppearanceControl
Private _toolStripColorProperties As ToolStripColorProperties
Private _menuStripColorProperties As MenuStripColorProperties

I am currently building two applications a client and a server, where several objects have to be sent between the applications, a couple objects each way.The applications are called "ACME Server" and "ACME Client" (yay for originality). While I can get the first object to be transferred from the client to the server, but I can't get the second object to be transferred successfully from the server to the client, the error is occurring in the client program,I have taken a printscreen of the error that I am receiving, I have uploaded to [URL]..
All objects that are being sent are serializable (well there is an Interface called Action which I am unable to make serializable I believe due to it being an Interface).

I have a solution with two projects within:
Company.Project.vbproj
Company.Project.Tests.vbproj
Within the Company.Project.vbproj assembly, I have a class FriendClass.vb which scope is Friend (internal in C#).Now I wish to test this FriendClass.vb from within the Company.Project.Tests.vbproj assembly. I know about the InternalsVisibleToAttribute, but that is not an option in Visual Basic .NET 2.0, as it is only available with C#, in .NET 2.0 (see here).I would like to create myself a proxy class using this internal FriendClass from within my testing assembly, so that I could instantiate it and do the testings accordingly.

Some will remember my first thread about extracting an image from a 3rd party application. The solution that was offered was to use the Easy Screenshot class that is in the code bank. While this solution works, there are obvious drawbacks. I'm trying to fully automate this program, and needing the window to come to the foreground, even momentarily, defeats the purpose of it.Is there another way to get the image held in a picture box of a 3rd party application?

I am trying to create an interface between a third party application which can make use of C/C++ DLLs, but no interface directly to .NET. What I was hoping to accomplish (not sure if possible though), is create a very basic C++ DLL (not .NET), which the third party application would call directly. This DLL would contain a basic method such as "DoSomething()". Somehow, from my .NET application, I want to "listen" to this DLL and "takeover" the DoSomething() method, and then returning the result back to the DLL, which will in turn return the result back to the calling third party application.
I don't even know if this is possible because I'm sure I would somehow have to get a hold of the memory space of the DLL as initiated by the third party application. Also, it seems that creating a managed DLL does not work, based on feedback from other individuals who have tried this.

I have to write a program that will allow a usert o track the invitation list for a party. The user can enter the name of a person to be invited. When the send Invitatin button is clicked, the name appears in the checked listbox. This counts as an invited person. When an invited person confirms that they will be attending, the user will check the name in the checked listbox. this counts as a confirmed person.
What I am having a hard time figuring out is the codes! What would I declare my integer variables to hold the count of invited persons and the count of confirmed persons? And how would I code a loop to check if the name enetered in the name textbox already appears in the list box, if so, display a message telling the user that this person has already been invited?

I really like the coding speed that vb.net provides, but I don't like the possibility to forget to declare variable types, return types of functions, etc. and that is why in each class I use[code]..
Is there a way to define those two options on the project/solution level?

the combo box style 1 has both the drop down option but also a manual entry option. I need to know how to code it so that when you manually enter data, it takes that data and places it in a text message "The shipping charges for "data" is $15" displaying in a text box. Shouldn't be hard but have developed a mind block.

I'm trying out MVVM in VB.Net for a while now and started out with some of my entities using List(of T)s, which I xml serialized to disk. Now, I updated the classes used by the Lists to implement INotifyPropertyChanged so I also changed the List(of T)s to ObservableCollection(of T)s.After which, the XML serializer stopped working :'( A colleague told me that ObservableCollections, unlike generic Lists, are not serializable. If so then how can I make them Serializable?

I'm not positive I'm going about this the right way. I've got a suite of applications that have varying types of output (custom defined types). For example, I might have a type called Widget:
Class Widget
Public name as String
End Class
Throughout the course of operation, when a user experiences a certain condition, the application will take that output instance of widget that user received, serialize it, and log it to the database noting the name of the type.
Now, I have other applications that do something similar, but instead of dealing with Widget, it could be some totally random other type with different attributes, but again I serialize the instance, log it to the db, and note the name of the type. I have maybe a half dozen different types and don't anticipate too many additional ones in the future.
After all this is said and done, I have an admin interface that looks through these logs, and has the ability for the user to view the contents of this data thats been logged. The Admin app has a reference to all the types involved, and with some basic switch case logic hinged upon the name of the type, will cast it into their original types, and pass it on to some handlers that have basic display logic to spit the data back out in a readable format (one display handler for each type)NOW... all this is well and good...Until one day, my model changed. The Widget class now has deprecated the name attribute and added on a bunch of other attributes. I will of course get type mismatches in the admin side when I try to reconstitute this data.
I was wondering if there was some way, at runtime, i could perhaps reflect through my code and get a snapshot of the type definition at that precise moment, serialize it, and store it along with the data so that I could somehow use this to reconstitute it in the future?

Possible Duplicate: Fastest serializer and deserializer with lowest memory footprint in C#?
I'm using BinaryFormatter class to serialize an structure or a class. (after serialization, I'm going to encrypt the serialized file before saving. (And of course decrypt it before deserialization))But I heard that some other serialization classes are present in .Net Framework. Like XmlSerializer, JavaScriptSerializer, DataContractSerializer and protobuf-net.I want to know, which one is best for me?Less RAM space needed for serialize/deserialize is the most important thing for me. Also speed is important.
