View 6 RepliesI have a strange problem. We are upgrading a software that works perfectly in a 32-bits environment.Software have to connect to a serial port (or a virtual serial port) and read data and do wathever it has to do with it. Program uses the IO.Ports.SerialPort object.
Now, under Win7 64-bits, is works well when using "real" serial devices, with a DB-9 connector. But using USB device, with a virtual serial port (provided by the manufacturer), it doesn't work at all. I receive nothing on the DataReceive event. But it works fine on a Win7 32-bits.
Strangely, it also works on the 64-bits PC using a program like realTerm. When connected to the virtual serial port, data are received and it's fine. But from our software, it don't. I don't get anything from the serial port.
I'm trying to figure out how to calculate the lower 7 bits and 7-13 bits of two hex numbers.
Here is some example c code, just need this in vb.net:
serialBytes[2] = 0x64 & 0x7F; // Second byte holds the lower 7 bits of target.
serialBytes[3] = (0x64 >> 7) & 0x7F; // Third data byte holds the bits 7-13 of target
The 0x7F is a constant so the only number that changes based off input is the 0x64.
how can I use SQLConfigDataSource to add DSN to the 32 bits ODBC on Windows 7 64 bits? I know it use C:WindowsSysWow64odbcad32.exe and on registry, HKLMSoftwareWow6432Node but the API do not allow me to configure it?how can I do ?

View 2 RepliesThis seems like it would be so simple and fast, but I cannot figure out how to accomplish it in VB since there aren't many bit functions. I want to take a file and append 5 junk bits at the beginning and 3 junk bits at the end. In essence, just add 1 byte to the file, but in the process offset all the current bits so the file is no longer readable.
I just need a very simple encryption/decryption, but it needs to be very fast as well. I try XORing the bytes, but it gets slow with just a 1MB file. Some of the files are going to be close to 10MB.
I have written a simple VB.net application which saves information to an RFID tag. I am now trying to compress my data. The solution I have come up with involves bitwire operation.Basically I store 2 numbers per 1 byte (0-9, 10 being a period, 12 possibly being a negative/positive flag,13,14,15 unused as of yet).The code I am using basically shifts the byte containing a number left, 4 spaces, then 'OR's it against another number.Therefore 12 is now represented as 00010010. The problem i'm having is decompressing. Obviously getting the '1' back is easy, as I just shift right 4, then grab it. I need to append or remove the last 4 bits.My solution after many headaches was to reverse the bit order, shift left 4, then reverse, then tostring it.

I have a main form. In this form there is an option to open other form. TThis second form must return a few values to the main form. When the user click on this 2nd form, to return values, this form hangs up (2nd form hangs up)
But for what I could have known, it continues executing the rest of code that exists after to open form. I want to say that the form dialog (2nd form) is not closed (hangs up) but it the code continues being executed, because I have seen that inserts the data in the database.
The application not returns any error and any exception.

I'm new to Visual Basic. I'm trying to get this code to read a .txt file line by line. If the only thing that the line says is "B" it should add one to the intTotalBoys integer and so on with G for Girls, F for Fathers, and M for Mothers. I'm not sure why it won't work. [code]
View 4 RepliesI need to read in each line of a file that is comma delimited and I know how to do this.ut for this file, some of the values have quotes around them that contain commas and others do not. For example, the name field has "Doe, John and Lisa" and the other fields do not. How will this be handled? Will it read that whole field in as one or will it still seperate it as seperate fields?

The first question is - can I fill the structure directly somehow? Some structures are very long and filling them this way will be tedious. For example, if I know the length of the structure I could read the needed number of bytes in a byte array and somehow marshal these bytes into the structure.I can use Marshal.PtrToStructure, but then I would need to get an IntPtr of my byte array. I use <Serializable()> attribute for my structure.
I've got a program which reads a text file, in this file there are 2 or 3 lines between paragraphs. However when displaying in my textbox on my form i have 14-18 lines. Why? and how can I remove them?

I have several files that I am reading in and 'scrubbing'. The scrubbing is simply taking certain HTML tags and changing them - no big deal.When I read in the files (one at a time), they read and then I scrub them.The files stop reading mid-way *no matter what* the encoding type There is no stop character or anything, it is simple HTML and I do not see any reason why the file isn't being read I have attached one of files that is having a problem and the code is quite simple:

The file format has already been explained to me, and I can easily view it in notepad to understand it. It's basically a text file with a fancy extension and what not. The only problem is that I need to read it and pull a certain span of data from it.Here's the basic format:

This is the first 10 lines, which is useless data for me. However, right after the first 10 lines, is a span of an unknown quantity of lines that I do need that are formatted like so:grassC:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo Custom itiondatalevelsestlood_creekitmapslood_creek groundThe first line is the name of a bitmap assigned to the ID, while the second line is the path to the bitmap.Finally, after the unknown span of lines, there are two lines that go in this order:01Which I can safely assume at this point that the list no longer needs to be read.What I need to do is be able to open this file, skip over the first 10 lines which are completely useless, and then pull out the unknown gap of lines, and then stop reading when the line is '0', or at the end of the list.

I want to let Button1 check whats in TextBox1.Text and search "list.txt" for it. When it has got a match (there is only ONE of these numbers in list.txt).For example TextBox1.Text = "IDS_PROPITEM_TXT_011946". And I search for that so I find the line above. Now I want 3 other textboxes which show the 21st, 22nd, 23rd column/number after "IDS_PROPITEM_TXT_011946". And they should be editable by changing those 3 textboxes and clicking the apply button.How can I best do this, and please give a little example.
Is there a way to set BitConverter to produce Int32 values from BigEndian-encoded bytes?I feel like there might be a way to temporarily "set" the encoding to BigEndian before calling BitConverter, but I haven't figured it out.Right now I'm just reversing the 4 bytes before calling BitConverter, I guess I could create my own function that adds the bytes with the appropriate multiplier, but it seems a little inelegant if it can be done simply with BitConverter.
