I want to check if the variables sUsername and sPassword are in the database, now the SQL syntax looks fine to me, but I am wondering how do I execute the command (I thought it might be scCommand.ExecuteNonScalar), and I'm also wondering how do I check if it returned any results? The other question was, this can connect to my website's MySQL database right?
Last year (2010) I came across a FANTASTIC command that allowed me to take a string of variables with a common delimiter and break it all back out into separate variables (possibly an array) with one statement.

As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.
I need to be able to have a loop which checks records in the database and if it matches up then do something. I need to check that zone = currentZone and if it does then to submit my update query.

If the user check a checkbox, the value is written as checked in the data field (MS Access).The problem is when I search for the user information, I need the information from the Data base to populate(return) to the windows form. Example: If I enter a users phone number and the user data is present, the form gets populated with the information the user previously entered which was store in the database.Example: If the user selected checkbox1 and submits the form. I have a chat server / client system running, but I want users to authenticate with my vBulletin forum database.I don't want the client to do it, because it is possible to fake the 'successful login' and connect with a fake username. I want to send the username and password details to the server, and make the server check it with the local vBulletin MySQL database for the username and password.Is there a way to do this? To my knowledge vBulletin has a username and a password entries in the database which is salted, and the salt varies from user to user.

The data field(column) is set to YES/NO, if the user check a checkbox, the value is written as check in the data field.The problem is when I search for the user information, I need to get to form to the state it was in when the user submitted it.

I am writing some code and want to check if certain things are in my database. Is there a better way than just creating a new string, performing the select and storing it in the string? I have to do this a few times for several items in my DB columns, but is there a way I should be doing this that would not require me to make a new string, and a new select for several items, well a better way? The items in my db aren't all strings and the data types vary.

Ideally I'd like to make an array which can hold multiple values...such as
Job[job#].joblocation
Job[job#].jobsupervisor
So there would be a Job array, and then different values contained within that. I can't seem to make an object or whatever which allows me to hold different variables inside it.
Im currently writing a sort of Tamagotchi game or "virtual pet". It's really basic, it runs on timers and has a health meter, hygiene, happiness etc. The problem I have is when the program is closed it obviously resets the properties back to the origional settings. Is there a way I can save the state of the program so when the user opens it back up it is as the same as of the point when it was closed?[Just had an idea, would I set a timer to periodically save the value of the variables to a database and then have them load the next time the user opens the program, for example if the health was 50% on closing or at intervals it would save the health into a column in a db table then when the user re opens the program call that db?]

These values are configuration setting of the application as specified by user and are stored in a database (more than 50 in number containing strings/boolean and numeric). I have defined a structure to contain all the variables that will store this information. At start of app, I retrieve all values from database and fill the structure which i can use when required. I am wondering if it is a good idea to declare too much of variables and keep them alive during the run-time as compared to retrieving the values from database every time it is required?

View 3 RepliesI have code, shown below, that works all except for 1 thing: The variables being passed byRef get passed, but once modified in the else section of the "if me.invokerequired" code of RecordData, the variables are never updated in the calling function. To reiterate, the calling function does not receive the updated data that is in the variables custid and amt.When debugging, I see the data change in the else section of "if me.invokerequired", but once it returns from the callback the data is missing.[code]

Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....
But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)

Does the memory used in declaring variables are reclaimed by the OS when these variables go out of scope?Does the memory used be released by setting thier value to nothing? if not, then how can I force the garbage collector to run or excecute at a certain/desired time..How about in Windows Forms..How can we make sure that the memory used in initializing and showing forms be released if those forms were closed?

View 5 RepliesI have a class that does four things: unzips and zips files, downloads and uploads files. It needs to complete all four actions for 9 different command line apps. Which means, unfortunately, that there needs to be 4 different strings for each time. All in all, I need to create 36 strings which are different command line arguments. I need to figure out the best way to accomplish this. Should I just create all 36 strings in the class? Or should I use a constructor? Or... properties? Maybe a structure?

I have a label that says "Press enter to Play", and if the user presses play the flag is true, the label visible is set to false. I have the keydown event to check if the enter button has been pressed, i checked if it works and it does, but the var of the flag is always false in my other subs...
Thats the thing with vb i dont understand is when you make a public variable, and when you change the value of the var in a sub, it doesnt change globally.

I am making a program where in form 1, the user inputs data, and the data is used in form 2.[code]There are 12 number boxes and 12 text boxes. I also tried to use a label (label 4) to test if i could even use the variables on form 1. I can't. When you press the button, It clears the text box, and removes the label.
