VS 2008 - Updating Access Database From DataGridView
Mar 24, 2010
I have a datagrid view that displays information from a table. Changes I make to the data grid view are not saved. I have a button called btnsave but I have no idea what to put in the click event to save changes to the DB.
vb
Dim ConnStr As String = String.Format("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source={0}", DataDir)
Dim conn As New OleDb.OleDbConnection(ConnStr)
Dim sql As New OleDb.OleDbCommand("Select * FROM USERS")
Dim dt As New DataTable

I'm having trouble updating my access database using DataGridView1 on my form. I created a DataGridView on my form linking it to an access database data source. At run time, the DataGridView shows the content of my access database. When I edit the database data in DataGridView, it looks like the database is being updated but when I close the form and reopen, the database is not updated. Do I have to write code and assign it to a button to update the access database? Is there a way to update the database once a new value is entered in the DataGridView? Am I missing a setting that does this automatically?

I have an access table that I'm loading into a dataset, then I'm binding the dataset to a bindingsource. The bindingsource is the datasource for a datagridview. I can use a command builder to update the entire table, but I need to update all the rows (or changed rows) in specific columns. I have a column called "dPrint" which is Boolean. I'm not sure how to use the bindingsource as my datasource in an Update Command. I've tried this:

I'm having problems updating my existing access database in vb. Whenever I exit my program, the changes made won't save. How can I correct this? This is the code I have so far...
Code:
Private Sub Customer_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'TODO: This line of code loads data into the 'AutioEssentialsDataSet3.Customer' table. You can move, or remove it, as needed.

and nothing happened in my database and there's no compilation error?

I have a DataGridView that is attached to a BindingSource that gets data from a SQL Server database. I can populate the DataGridView without a problem. I can even insert/update it without issue if I run the update code from a click event of a button. But where I run into issues is when I try to update the database as soon as the user is done editing a row.
I thought that the DataGridView_RowLeave event would be perfect for that, but it actually does not commit the changes until it has been fired twice (that is, after an edit, I have to click on a different row or arrow down twice before the edit shows up in the database). Then I thought why not call the update code on both the _RowLeave and the _RowEnter? That worked fine for updates, but then I found that three records were inserted into the database when I added a new row to the DataGridView (the data gets inserted, then a null value, then the data again).
After digging around on the web for most of the day, I found that the _RowLeave event actually gets called pretty early on when you move to another row, so I figured maybe the changes made in the DataGridView aren't getting transmitted to the underlaying DataTable before the DataAdapter.Update method is being called. That would explain why the data would not update with the first call to _RowLeave, but would when using a click on a save button (since all the DataGridView events would complete before the button click event fires). So, I begain experimenting by placing my update code into various events. I tried _CellEndEdit, _CellValueChanged, _CurrentCellDirtyStateChanged (with a call to DataGridView.CommitEdit), and _RowValidating. I even tried calling BindingContext(DataGridView.DataSource).EndCurrentEdit() in conjunction with my update sub, but none of those would update the database when the focus left the edited row. :(
I'm at my wits end here. Surley it's possible to commit the changes made on the DataGridView to the database when the focus is moved off the edited/new row. It's obvious to me that I need to flush the changes shown on the DataGridView down to the DataTable, but I can't seem to find the right method/event to do just that.

For Each row As DataGridViewRow In DataGridView1.SelectedRows
DataGridView1.Rows.Remove(row)
Next
End Sub

I have taken over support of a VB .Net application that makes use of an Access database. Now I discover that the developer who wrote this application did not create any unique indexes on the primary key columns for the tables in the database. So none of the primary key fields are actually flagged as being primary keys in access and so no duplicate checking is being performed by Access. Furthermore, the primary key columns are not being auto-incremented with an AutoNumber type in Access, rather the developer has used queries like this to insert rows into the tables:
INSERT INTO Users (pkid, FirstName, Surname, City)SELECT iif(isnull(max(pkid)),0,max(pkid))+1, [@strFirstName], [@strSurname], [@strCity], FROM Users; This application is generally run as a networked application with up to 40 people using the application simultaneously, and combined with design issues already mentioned, this has resulted in serious concurrency issues with several users being assigned the same primary key value. This == BIGNow I need to sort this out (guess what I will be doing this weekend!! Great.). I have thought about maybe using a mutex around the code that calls the Access insert queries; not the neatest of solutions, but it would be the quickest. Ultimately though, I would like to have the database corrected and have proper primary key values in place. But the application is currently running at about 15 different sites, so I need to do some sort of batch update of the database.

I am having a problem updating an access database with new information from an updated dataset. the database consists of 4 columns: User_ID, Login_Name, Password, Access. The following code makes a connection to the database, fills a dataset with the data from the database, reads a txt file with user name and passwords, and should update the dataset and then the database. However, I keep getting an Syntax error on the INSERT INTO statement on the datest.Update(dsUser,"User") line. I have found multiple posts on here showing the correct syntax of how to update a database, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I've been browsing these forums for a day looking for the answer to this, so far nthing has fitted.I've got an access 2000-2003 database containing a whole pile of data for a VB coded application to use. One of the tables in the database needs to be able to be updated with data from the application. The new data is stored in the app as a datatable. I need to replace the original table in the Access file with the datatable in the App.
I'm changing as many as 60 values at a time, so defining these as parameters in an OleDbCommand would be impractical and frankly ridiculous.

I'm developing a program utilizing an Access database and Visual basic. I'm having a problem saving the data I'm adding to the database. I'm entering the data into the database table with text boxes and making a new row and adding it the the table:Database2DataSet.Tables("").Rows.Add(newRow)
I have a grid view for the table, and the new row is added to the table, showing that I'm getting the new information into the table. However, I'm trying to save this new information to the database so its there after I close the program. I've tried using the following but none have worked so far.

DB2, located on a shared network drive, contains nothing more than the structure of DB1, but which I have updated to include new fields in various tables, as well as some new queries and modules.4. I need to be able to copy whatever new table structure there is, etc, without overwriting the user's existing data.

command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Name", Combobox1.text)
command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Age", textbox1.text)

Is this a correct syntax of updating an access database using parameters?
