View 6 RepliesI need to use quotes inside a string variable... but I don't know how.If I simply put double quotes at the start and at the end, the program interprets it as a closed interval, like if every quote is a string.
What can I do? I've searched here, but none of the results seems to be related with VB.net.
I am teaching myself VB, and when I try to run this program, I am getting "An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." If I was to declare the variables inside each event handler, the program runs, but why won't it run when I make the scope public? Seems repititous having to declare the variables in every event handler. [code]
View 7 RepliesThis should create a desktop shortcut but instead it spits out an error that is because of the quotes inside quotes. They need to be there, I know this is the problem as I have tried without them and it has worked. Another problem though is that it creates the shortcut (when Idon'thave quotes in quotes) but wraps the whole TargetPath in quotes making the shortcut unusable. Here is my code:
Dim input As String
Dim s As String = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("UserProfile")
input = TextBox1.Text

Is there any way to use selectnode with the attribute having both single and double quotes? If we are having single quote in the attribute we can use like below,
nodeList = root.SelectNodes("//book[contains(title,""'attribute'"")]")
If we are having double quotes we can use,
nodeList = root.SelectNodes("//book[contains(title,'"""attribute"""')]")
how can I use an attribute ['attribute"] having both single and quotes in SelectNodes.
Dim hmm As String
hmm = "HELLO"
Console.WriteLine(hmm)[code].....
The Output of this Code is HELLO But how should i get it in double Quotes as"HELLO" This has to be my output in double quotes.
i Have two subs
Protected Sub Btn_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Dim Id as string = MyClass.getID
Private Sub Sub2(ByVal doc As Document)
' in here i need to access the ID from the above sub the Id needs to be in the btn_click sub cos it reates a unike id every time it is clicked.I am trying to capture the id at the time the button is clicked and store it on a variable.
I am writing a program and i need to declare matrices but there will be a different number to declare everytime the program is run so I was wondering if anyone knew how to declare them inside a for loop
eg.
For i = 1 to NumberOfMatrices
Dim matrix i (5,5) As Double
Next
I'm trying to make an application that calls a function to create a timer, but I cant use WithEvents or Private inside of a function or sub, Is there any way to do this?
View 5 RepliesThis is my first post here at Xtreme VB Talk. I just started programming 2 semesters ago. I am currently working on a program but I am having a little trouble with the length. I am trying to take the integer entered in a text box and using it inside the name of another object.

If I try to display a command line argument that has double quotes around, the double quotes are always stripped off. How can I avoid this?
for example, the argument is "c:xx.txt" and this displays c:xx.txt instead Console.WriteLine((My.Application.CommandLineArgs(4)))
I have some variables that are distinct by numbers, like in1, in2...If I have for loop, how would I access those variables, using the counter, and attaching it to the variable?I believe in JAVA, you could just use in+ct... where ct is the counter to access the variable.also how could you make a new variable in the for loop?Initially I had variables declare outside of the for loop. The problem was how to access those variables using the for loop.
var_nm1 = in1.Text
var_nm2 = in2.Text
var_nm3 = in3.Text
Dim nmList(2) As Integer
[code]....
This is object oriented programming, and I made the textboxes in1, in2, and in3 using the GUI editor. that was so easy.
Well I am a new to VB.NET, converting a legacy system to .NET world. Recently I have been reviewing the already existing code since I joined the project quite late in the team. I find that there are many shared functions (not shared class) inside many classes. I doubt this may create some problem if two requests ( i.e two different HTTP request to the same method as it's a WCF application, of course exposed methods are not shared but internally called methods are shared) comes to the same shared method and both the calls to the method may have different method parameters/arguments, overwriting each other's arguments. In short, if shared method has a list of arguments which is going to be processed, is there any chance of inconsistencies in the light of multiple access to the shared method via two http requests.
View 2 RepliesI have an xml document on the internet right. Lets say it contains:
<tag>goose</tag>
What I want to do, is when the user clicks a button in my vb form it looks for the "tag" tag and finds the text inside the tags which is goose. Then it sets a label to equal goose, or whats in those tags.
I need to read some information from a txt file and put all that info to a textbox (this is ready and done)but the textfile have some variables like %userName% that i need to replace programatically in vb.net?example of text file:hello %userName% , this is an automated report of the uses of your account. this is what the txt file have in it, when i read it to vb.net and put that info into a textbox is done right, but the question is how to replace the %userNams% for some text in another textbox and replaced when i press a button?
View 1 RepliesLast year (2010) I came across a FANTASTIC command that allowed me to take a string of variables with a common delimiter and break it all back out into separate variables (possibly an array) with one statement.
[Code]...
As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.
How do i put "" quotes in a string because the string is defined with " and " i want it to be something like Dim TempString As String = "Test="Test"" but how do i get the "" inside the "" if you know what i mean.
View 4 RepliesI have a table with many values inside of it that might have single quotes around them. I need to create a duplicate table without those single quotes. I can't modify the original table as I need to use it, 'as-is' later.
I've done this with a table.Clone and using a foreach to loop through the rows and columns removing single quotes as I need and then putting that new row into the new table. It works and it's straight forward.....but
I'd like to do the same thing using LINQ. This was my attempt....
Dim myResults = From myRow In dtTable _
From myItem In myRow.ItemArray _
Where TypeOf myItem Is String AndAlso _
myItem.ToString.StartsWith("'"c) AndAlso _
myItem.ToString.EndsWith("'"c)
As you can see - I didn't get very far. I had trouble finding examples that weren't looking at a specific column in the DataRow. It looks like my code does pull back all the matching results - but I'm at a lose for how I can create a duplicate table/modify the values.
I use a textfieldparser to read a csv file in my app. I set the delimiter to a, Problem is, if there is a field that contains double quotes, the textfieldparser fails. So if I have Example",test. it fails. If i remove the " it works. That's quite odd. How can I fix this.
View 8 RepliesI have a simple question regarding the KeyPress event. I'm trying to make it to where my TextBox on my form can only accept numbers 0-9, backspace and '.' /without quotes. I've successfully got it to accept numbers 0-9, accept backspace, I'm just wondering - what line do I add so that it can accept periods as well?
Here's my
Private Sub TextBox_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e _
As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles _
TextBox.KeyPress

I am trying to think of a regex replace to replace double quotes with nothing. Example:
hello("hi there") would become hello(hi there)
"hi" would become hi
"example "3" would become example "3
-edit Maybe an easier way to explain this is, replace all " that do not have a backslash before them.
I have code, shown below, that works all except for 1 thing: The variables being passed byRef get passed, but once modified in the else section of the "if me.invokerequired" code of RecordData, the variables are never updated in the calling function. To reiterate, the calling function does not receive the updated data that is in the variables custid and amt.When debugging, I see the data change in the else section of "if me.invokerequired", but once it returns from the callback the data is missing.[code]
View 15 RepliesI define some global variables of a class as follows:
Private Class MyClass
Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....
But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)
Does the memory used in declaring variables are reclaimed by the OS when these variables go out of scope?Does the memory used be released by setting thier value to nothing? if not, then how can I force the garbage collector to run or excecute at a certain/desired time..How about in Windows Forms..How can we make sure that the memory used in initializing and showing forms be released if those forms were closed?

Question 2: I noticed while using, AddressOf _Function_, variables cannot be passed; what would be an efficient solution to this?
Question 3: While using multithreading is it required to invoke before setting variables, or only form properties?
Question 4: While using System.Net.Sockets is it safe/efficient to use Application.DoEvents while waiting for new data; or would be using a Do While loop be fine without DoEvents since the action would be multithreaded? Note: there can be up to 2000-3000 sockets in use at a time.

I have a xls file, or a csv without quotes, and using vb.net need to turn it into a csv with quotes around every cell. If I open the xls/csv without quotes in MS Access, set every column to text and then export it, its in the format I need. Is there an easier way? If not, how do I do replicate this in vb.net?
