VS 2008 Winsock Can't Keep Connection Alive
Jan 3, 2010
I am trying to make a basic server/client program but I ran in a problem.
[Code]....
When I click connect in the GUI the first state of sock.ctlstate is 6 , connecting then the connected event is triggered and after that the sock.ctlstate is 8 , "Peer is closing the connection". But I dont understand why it does this. I should keep the connection alive to communicate.

I have an application that connects to an SQL Server, sometimes we have a networkinterruption of min 10secs during the openconnection , I get a General Network Error when I try to carry out any procedure that communicates with the database afterthe interruption. Even when the connection is closed and reopened, I still get General Network Error. The only way to get the application to function again is to close the Application and reopen it, is there any way I can keep the connection alive?

if i go to sql server configuration manager and shutdown the SQL server, the server will be down.
How do i detect for those changes using vb.
Public Sub CheckConnection()
Dim con As New SqlConnection
Dim objCmd As New SqlCommand
[Code]....
I cant make those work because the connection opens and close. WHat i want is to check if the server is alive or dead.

my project is attached. I have a very weird problem with Winsock! I made 1 program with 2 forms. 1st form is the client, 2nd form is the server. Server send snapshot for client. So, client display either Single Picture. Or stream of pictures (to simulate video capturing).
when open 1st window (client) in a computer, and 2nd window(server) in another computer... it connect and display picture without problem just once!! when press "Capture" button again it may reponse or Winsock may loss connection. and when Check "Loop"=> means for stream of pictures.. Winsock loss connection immediatly! I don't know where is the problem exactly! The code attached. Winsock ocx is attached.. see it in the release folder

I am trying to make a client server form application using VB2005. I am using VS2005 Professional for development.
The problem is as follows:
When more than one client tries to connect to the server. The connection is refused and the Client gets an exception in Connect() method - Target machine actively refused the connection.
This problem occurs only when 2 or more clients try to simultaneously connect to the server. For a single client accessing at a time the problem does not occur. The code segment is as given below:
-----------1 Module
Imports System.Net.Sockets
Imports System.Net
Public Class FrmMdiParent
Dim WithEvents wsServer As New Winsock2005DLL.Winsock
Private Sub FrmMdiParent_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosing
[Code] .....
The above exception is thrown when more than 1 clients try to access the server simultaneously.

I cannot get WinSock running. I am running XP Pro, with VS2008. I have downloaded mswinsck.ocx and installed in the c:windowssystem32 and syswow64 directories and ran regsvr32 C:windowsSystem32MSWINSCK.OCX and regsvr32 C:windowsSysWOW64MSWINSCK.OCX. I have added it to my tools panel. Once I add the control to my form, the form will not run. I get the error below. It I cannot even run other winsock examples.

Ive been trying to get this tcp server to work it uses winsock, I can connect to the server fine but as soon as i send a messege It errors with this messege Unable to determine size of incomming packet. It's possible you may need to use Legacy SupportWinsock_Orcas.AsyncSocket.ReceiveCallbackWhat does this mean?note: vb isnt making this error the program itself is, a link to the project is:I think error might be the cause of all the failures of Tcp servers i have tried how it would only recieve

When using teh system.threading.timer or threading.threadpool. queueuserworkitem, you are able to pass an object.
But wouldn't the garbage collector destroy the object even before the callback can be executed?[code]...

I have a user app written in VB which up till now has relied on winsock to connect to another device we have. The user app logs onto the device and then send / receives status reports from it which are used to set the controls on the apps forms.
This has all worked well for a long time but I'm now looking to move away from Winsock as I know it's not 'the right way' to do things and I also need to be able to send non ascii characters between the app and the device it's connected to (implementing multi language support).
The issue is with Winsock it would simply throw the DataArrival event when a message was received and I could then process the message and act upon it. When using a TcpClient socket connection I'm running into problems as all responses are on the socket thread which means I can't simply change controls on the main form without using the Invoke check.
What I want to be able to do is have the thread running the TcpClient simply alert the main form thread when it receives data and make that data available to the main thread so it can start processing it and triggering all the other functions etc required (these also interact with the Form). Whilst this is happening the TcpClient monitors any further messages and sends response messages as requested from the main thread.

I'm trying to setup sort of a LAN keep-alive proxy...Ex.: My Xbox 360 is connected strait to my computer via an ethernet cable. My computer is connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi adapter. Everything works fine and I can access the internet on the Xbox and computer.
Issue: Every time I start my Xbox I have to set up a "Home or Small Office Network" via the control panel to access the internet. What I would like to do is implement a proxy that when I shutdown the Xbox the LAN doesn't give the "Network Cable Unplugged" notification. I wasn't sure if there was a way to make the connection stay open for so long after it should say unplugged. Such as if I need to restart the system and don't want to have to re-setup the network on the computer.
This is my code to retrieve the network info:
Imports System.Net
Imports System.Net.NetworkInformation
Module Module1
