VS 2008 Find Out File Extension Knowing Filename Only?

Jul 5, 2010

I am looking for an advise on how to find out the extension of the file only knowing the name and the location of it. I tried getextension method and some other but they don't seem to do anything to me.

E.G.:
Dim FileFullPath As String = "\SERVERPublicCRM_LibraryOrderMGMLetters" & datagridLetters.CurrentRow.Cells.Item(0).Value.ToString() & ".pdf"

C# - Find A File By Filename Only (i.e. Extension Unknown)

Jul 27, 2010

We have a network folder that is the landing place for csv files processed by different servers. We alter the extension of the csv files to match the server that processed the file; for instance a file with the name FooBar that was process by Server1 would land in the network share with the name FooBar.Server_1.

The information I have available to to me is file name: FooBar and the path to the share. I am not guaranteed the extension as there are multiple servers sending csv files to the network share. I am guaranteed that there will only be one FooBar file in the share.

Is there a method in .net 2.0 that can be used to get the extension of the csv armed only with the path and filename? Or do I need to craft my own?

Get Filename Of File (using Shell Extension)?

Apr 21, 2010

I have an application, that I have integrated into Windows Shell, for this example I will use Notepad. You can right-click a file on the desktop and select 'Edit with Notepad', this launches(if I am not mistaken 'NotePad %1') notepad, and opens the file right away for editing. For my application I need this to get the file name, so basically I would right click on my application, and it will run and have the filename for me to use inside the application.

File I/O And Registry :: Finding Path/filename Associated With Extension?

Jun 24, 2011

I suppose technically this isn't .NET specific but I suspect this is something to do with the registry and I'm using .NET!I'm trying to find out how to get the fully qualified path relating to a file type. For example, the system knows that to open a PDF file it needs to launch C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Reader 10.0Readeracrord32.exe

I've had a good long search through the registry and found a lot of references to the adobe path probably too many - and I've edited them to try and "break" the process so I can identify which one is used to discover the path but with no luck. I'm assuming this has something to do with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT?

Find A File Without Knowing Where It Is On All Drives?

Aug 3, 2010

SPECS: Visual Basic 2008 - SP1/2, Framework 3.0.3.5, Windows XP Pro, SP3? trying to wright code for checking for existing files but what has me stumped is the (WHAT IF PART) of it witch in fact is what I want to see. What im saying is can I find a file without knowing where it is on all drives? Or how can i find a folder if I dont know where they installed it to.

Example: I know that C:Perfect World International <--- is the default location where my game installs but what if I installed it on D:Perfect World International; or rather on drive G or H. How would I test to see if it exist without making a bunch of nested If statements to test every drive for it.

this also applies to files like: D:Perfect World EntertainmentPerfect World Internationalelementelementclient.exe is there a way to find these files to see if they exist. I know that Perfect world international does not use the program files to put there program files in as you see above. so Envirnment variables I think cant be used correct me if I'm wrong. BUT I know the registry of a computer keeps some stord information as to where these applications are installed to like (References App Data).

What I'm trying to do is use this to tell the user in a Label that the game is installed in this path but I know in some circumstances the game is not installed on drive C: or D: or even in this directory some users can install it in there own directory such as C:PWI. and as such the file elementclient.exe can even be in C:PWIelementclient.exe. So to sum it all up can this be found useing some sort of code to find the file and folder and return them both in 2 difrent labels like this

Game Is Installed In: C:Perfect World International
Game Client Name: elementclient.exe, C:Perfect World Internationalelement
Game Found On Drive: C:
ETC.

I'm thinking and keep thinking that this can be done in many ways but as for environment variables I'm stumped. But perhaps windows registry may play a role in doing this but I myself don't even know where this stuff may be found; and even more how to apply it to code.

Find File By Extension And Last Accessed Time And If Possible User Id

Dec 6, 2011

I am brand new to VB and been advised it might be the best thing to use for my problem, so here goes. I need to be able to scan a machine for all excel and access db files and list them by name and last accessed time. I would like to be able to do this in bulk so more than 1 machine at a time but thinking it my be best to do each machine seperately.

When I have the data I need it to be exported in a list to either excel or a text file or anything really. Als if possible how would I add the machine name to the list so I know which one i have scanned. I have been searching the forums and google but think I am getting more confussed as this is a whole new world for me.

VS 2008 - Accessing File Path Without Knowing Full Name

Jul 16, 2010

I need to access a file path, but a part of the path is different on each PC. Mozilla creates a random profile name for each PC it is installed on. I can get most of the path through environment variables. I need to access the files inside of the default profile, but can't since I'm not sure how to access it.

Here's an example of the file path:
'C:Users\%USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingMozillaFirefoxProfilesxxxxxxxx.default'
The only thing that stays the same with the profile name, is the '.default' part.

VS 2008 Scan A Long String And Return Any Values That Occur Between The Tags <FileName> And </FileName>?

Jul 1, 2009

Quick query...I'm trying to scan a long string and return any values that occur between the tags <FileName> and </FileName> I've got a bit of code here to use regular expressions to return the position of the occurunces of both substrings..Just wanted to find out if there is any way to scan for both substrings within one loop (as im currently doing 2, one for the first substring and one for the 2nd) so I can use something along these lines:

ringlist = Mid(XMLRESP, (startloc + 1), (endloc - 1))
MsgBox(ringlist)

to msg box the value between the substrings...either that or another approach to return the value between the 2 substrings (it can be of variable length)

Dim patternstart As String = "<FileName>"
Dim patternend As String = "</FileName>"
Dim matchesstart As MatchCollection = Regex.Matches(XMLRESP, patternstart)

VS 2008 : Proc.MainModule.FileName Has Repeated File Path

Dec 25, 2009

in my program, i use that code for getting the file path of a process, once it gets the path, it is put into a list view which has details like the task manager. the code works fine the first time, but with a little bug that is, when it reaches the vhost of my program. For some reason, it just copies the file path of my program even though the process has changed. After the code has gone through, i want it to refresh the list so as doing the same as when loaded...so I let it refresh and once again it copies the path of the vhost, but this time it has basically taken over every process' location. So in turn, I only get returned my programs location, for something like the task managers location, where it would be like "C:Windowssystem32skmgr.exe"

Here's the

VB
Private Sub frmmain_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim Process As New Process()
Dim Count As Integer = 0

[code]....

The refresh code is frmmain_Load(Nothing, Nothing) just to make things easy for me right now, while i get that part of the program going. To me it seems to be working fine, but why it does that what it does, im not sure. as you can see, the process changes. and Ive even checked it through run time, and each and every time, the process.processname changes.

Asp.net - Restrictions By File Extension In Server 2008?

Sep 6, 2009

I am having problems downloading files possibly due to the file extensions not matching the actual file. What is happening is the File.Exists check is returning false for these even though the named file does exist. Is anybody aware of anything in IIS or even IE which would cause this? I have seen this with .txt, .exe. and .avi files. The .avi works of as long as the file really is an avi and not renamed from something else.
