Nov 6, 2010How would i know when a thread is completed running it's task? I mean in background worker it has a completed event, but can i make something similar to that?

Nov 24, 2010is it guaranted that a task A started before TaskB will be completed before task B assuming the task do the same level of operatons?or in other words is there a chance that a task B will finish before tast A in the assumption that the task calls the same procedure?

Oct 7, 2011I have a spellcheck program for an external application. My vb.net app calls a .vbs file to invoke the word spellcheck engine, runs the spellcheck, copies to MS clipboard and then I want it to automatically paste back into the active window. What my issue is, is that I need a delay or check of some sort in the code so that I can know when the vbscript has been completed before pasting text to to the window. I've tried the following but the app invokes the script then immediately checks to see if the script is running (which of course it is) so it's useless... Or is this something I should change/handle in the vbs file? I'm not very good with vbscript however.

Webbrowser Completed - But Sub Is Running Faster Than Page Can Load - PAUSE?
Feb 13, 2011I have a few subs that run under Webbrowser1.document completed section of my app I know the code words because I tried it out using a new project and tied the code to a button and it works great. After stepping into my code during run time it appears that the app is trying to call my sub before the next page appears. What would be the way to place a pause on the Thread so that the web page can catch up before running the next sub?

This is, of course, very buggy and causes a lot of violation errors etc. But that doesn't matter right now. How come the multi-threading way is so much faster than the regular routine? Is the processor not running on full speed with the first code, and is it working harder on the second?I find it weird to see this type of "threading performance increase", as if every single thread gets their own piece of processor speed allocated like it is a new process
Run Task On Main Thread?
Mar 23, 2011I have an application that displays real time data. Queries are made to a MySQL database on another PC over the internet every 10 seconds to gather the most recent data.Originally I did the query within a BackgroundWorker so that the GUI is still responsive while the query is answered. However, I found that I need a timeout on the database query (as sometimes it hangs without generating an error) and couldn't do this within the background worker.
So now I'm trying to do it with threads. I have managed to run a thread to get the data.I need to understand how to run a task on the main thread when the GetDataThread is complete. If I do this using Events as shown below then Sub GetDataComplete is running as part of the GetDataThread not the Main Thread. I want to run a sub like backgroundWorker1_RunWorkerCompleted (this seems to run on the main thread).
My Main thread is called MainThread

Now where i click that button the other text boxes are filled up with the data from database thru web service.. what i want is while all text boxes are being filled i want to show an animated loading gif image till data loading is completed in all the text boxes.. i have tried to use image picture box but while data is loading gif image is displyes but in static mode.. cant see animation... i think this is because data loading and animation both are done thru one UI thread..

When the son terminated, it could set a return code which could certainly be interrogated by an MS-DOS batch program or, I think, by any father program that invoked it (depending on the language in which that program was written). I have a small utilility which I want to invoke from my application, and, since that utility sets a return code, I would like to interrogate it in my application when the utility terminates. I've looked through the MSDN Library but could not find anything that seemed to cover this situation. Is there a way to do this in Visual Basic 2008 Express

Jan 30, 2012I am developing a solution in .Net utilising the VMWare Web Service API to create new isolated virtualised development environments. The front end will be web based. Requestors input details for the specific environment which will be persisted to SQL. So I need to write an engine of some sort to pull the data from SQL and work on the long running task of creating resource pools, switch port groups and cloning existing VM templates etc. As work progresses, events will be raised to write logs and update info back to SQL. This allows requestors to pull data back into a webpage to see how it's progressing or if it's completed.
The thing I am struggling with is how to engineer the engine which will exec the long running task of creating the environment. I cannot write a windows service (which I would like) as we work in a very secure environment and it's not possible (group policy etc). I could write a web service to execute the tasks, extending the httpRuntime executionTimeout to allow the task to complete. But I'm keen to hear what you guys think may be a better solution to use (based on .Net 3.5). The solution needs to be service oriented as we may be using it on other projects within our org. What about WWF, WCF? I have not used any of the newer technologies available since .Net 2.0 as we've only just been approved to move up from .Net 2.0.

I need to provide for the user clicking the CheckBox, starting the BackgroundWorker task, and then changing their mind and clicking the CheckBox again.I simply want to cancel the currently running task and set the analysis off again. Currently I have the following method:

ClickOnce Application Not Running As A Scheduled Task
Jul 27, 2009I am currently attempting to support a ClickOnce application that i did not write. This application is running from a scheduled task. The scheduled task points to a .application file. This had been running happily untill today when it stopped. The only thing that has changed is that the application has been executed manually by a developer by double clicking on the .application file. Since then each time the scheduled task is scheduled to run the application doesn't appear to execute. The task reports no error and the error code (0x0) given indicates it ran and completed ok.
I am not familiar with ClickOnce and am not sure when implication clicking the .application file would have had or why it has stopped running as a scheduled task. It appears to me that everything else has remained the same (i have checked it is running under the correct account etc).

Multiple Runtime Exceptions When Clicking Run From Task Scheduler / Works Fine Running Application From Project Folder
Jun 3, 2011So I wrote a VB.net project in Visual studio.I have a scheduled task that is set to run the program every morning at 10AM. If I use windows explorer and double click the application, it runs fine.If I open task scheduler, open the task properties, and browse to the application, then choose run, the program fails, due to Runtime exceptions.I know I have the path entered correctly, since I can debug the instance when it crashes from the task scheduler. VS2010 pulls up my source code.The exception is System.IO.FileNotFoundException, remember, it works fine when I double click the app. If attach a debugger to the process after it is executed from the task scheduler, I can then restart the debugger, and Voila!, The application runs fine.

Mar 5, 2009I want to start a job in a new thread or using backgroundworker to do it but havent done that before and asking you wich way I should do it. My program has a datagridview with a list of files, one file per row. I want the user to be able to select a row and then press "Start download" to start a background job of the download. I want to get events back of the progress of the download.
I have a class clsDownload that handles everything and raises events back but how do I implement the backgroundworking?Should I use the System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker inside of the class or create some wrapper that handles this or use some other threading stuff?
Edit: I dont understand how to implement my download in the backgroundworker, any small example would be very nice. The example on msdn didnt get me far.I have a download class that has a StartDownload-function. Should I use the backgroundworker IN the class or in the caller? "feeling stupid"
Running A Form On Another Thread?
Apr 28, 2012what i currently have is the main form that then when a user presses a button it runs some functions that loops through some files and changes them and then copys them to another location the functions can take quite some time. what i want to is when the button is pressed it opens another form with a textbox on it and when it has finished 1 cycle of the loop is outputs a line to the textbox and tells the user weather or not it has been sucsessfull.
