I've been using LINQ so much in the last couple of weeks that when I had to write a one line function to remove < and > from a string, I found that I had written it as a LINQ query: [code] My question is, is it better to do it with LINQ as above or with StringBuilder as I've always done, as below: [code] Both work, the second one is easier to read, but the first one is designed for executing queries against arrays and other enumerables.

View 39 RepliesI'm having a problem implementing Scott G's Dynamic.vb extension at [URL] in my vb solution. I've searched StackOverflow (80+ Q&As) and numerous other sites without much luck. I'm using VS 2010.I've included Dynamic.vb in a problem with no root namespace, and then added a reference to that project in my main one. I'm getting intellisense for 4 overloads (rather than 2) so I'm pretty certain that the extension is in scope.I was having a tough time with clauses, especially the OrderBy as Scott demonstrated. If I simply pass a string as Scott's VB example did I get the error "Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'OrderBy' can be called with these arguments."
The line of code is:
Dim FilteredComponentList = From Component As MX.Component In ComponentList.AsQueryable _
.OrderBy("Name")
So I found other references that stated to pass a Lambda expression. So I tried this and at least I get no error, even if the sort function still doesn't seem to work. Here is the code that compiles and executes.
Private Sub SortByColumn()
If Not cmbComponentFilter.SelectedItem.ToString = "All" Then
Dim FilteredComponentList = From Component As MX.Component In ComponentList.AsQueryable _
[code]....
When I interrogate the dgvComponents.Columns(e.ColumnIndex).Name it gives the objects property I wish to sort by, but the sort still isn't working. I'm concerned why I can't get Scott's implementation to work, but I've heard his keynotes and read his blogs, so I'm guessing the problem lies with my implementation.
I'd like either to work but need to understand why as well. Why doesn't passing a string work? Isn't the PARAMARRAY declared in the function optional?
Suppose I have the following data
Key ID Data
A 1 Hello
A 2 World
B 2 Bar
B 1 Foo
I am looking to produce the result
A HelloWorld
B FooBar
I am struggling to get the syntax quite right - I was trying to use Aggregate, but I wasn't sure if I could (or should) use SelectMany
Dim data = result.Rows.
GroupBy(Function(r) r.Key).
Select(Function(g) g.OrderBy(Function(s) s.ID)).

I'm having issues with returning a list of strings of the .Value of a Linq query:
Dim details = <Details>
<Vector size="5">

Syntactic Structures

Introduction

The Independence of Grammar

[Code]...
Is correct in that it returns the list of XElements I want (items 1 - 4, base 0), but I really just need a list of strings for the .Value of those XElements. Maybe I'm just dense here, but anything I've tried in the chapterTitles query isn't working (appending with .ToList.ToString, etc.). details.<Vector>.
.Skip(1).Take(4).Value just returns the first XElement's value.
Given a table like
ID | Name | City
1 | X | Y
2 | Z | Y

I have a specialized string dictionary of (string, string) (_RulesAndTheirDescriptions) that contains the name (key) and description (value) of methods in a given class. I currently do the following query to search for a match on the key or value and then bind that to a grid.
[Code]...
I'm migrating from VB6 to VB.NET, in hence my questions below:
I have to write a function that returns array of strings.
How can I initiate it to empty array? I need it since I have to check if it's empty array after it returns from this function.
Is list of arrays better for this purpose? If I use a list - Is it empty when it firstly defined? How can I check it it's empty?
Say I have a List(Of Tag) with Tag being an object. One member of Tag, Tag.Description, is a string, and I want to make a comma-separated concatenation of the Description members.Is there an easier way to do this than to read the Description members into a List(Of String) and then use the Join function?
View 2 RepliesI have users check off lab facilities in a UI. I want to use linq to fetch corresponding records for all of the labs that they have checked off. Basically,
Dim myRecs = (From l As EpiData In myDataContext.EPIDatas Where l.facility= _
one of the checked labs
So basically, I need to write a linq query where the "strings" to match are determined at runtime. Is there any way to do this easily? I know that there is a library out there called dynamic LINQ, but (1) it's in C# and I'm writing in VB (2) I'm really just looking for a single, simple solution for this single case.
I'm entering data into a text box, and I want to make sure the data I enter contains only letters. Is there any way in Visual Basic that I can go about doing this?
View 7 RepliesI am trying to make a program in Visual Basic which requires the use of 24-bit strings. However, I am not aware of a common name for them. I know that Byte is 8-bit, and Short is 16-bit, so is there a name for 24-bit?If not, then is there any way to combine a Byte and a Short to create the needed 24-bit value in my program?
View 2 RepliesI would like to make an enum of strings. There are several masks for text boxes that I would like to standardize in our system.For simplicity lets say there are 2 masks:
"PhoneNumber" which is "(999)000-0000"
"Zip Code" which is "00000-9999"
I would like to be able to reference these through out the entire program in a manner such as:
DefaultMasks.ZipCode or DefaultMasks.PhoneNumber
Since enums can not be of string type, what would your best suggestions be as to how I could do this. I had thought about a class with constants in it but I was not sure how to implement that properly.
I have a custom list control, using labels to display content.How can I add a list property to the control so I can inject items into the custom listbox?I know how to make properties for strings etc. but I can't get it to work to make a list property...
View 1 RepliesI just upgraded a project from VB 2008 to VB 2010. Before, the project did not use LINQ. I have started implementing it. So, I have updated the target framework from 2.0 to 3.5, and added a reference to System.Core, and imported the namespace System.LINQ to the entire project and also imported System.Data.LINQ into the form I'm working with (because it was not available in the list for Imported Namespaces in the references tab).
It's not throwing any errors now, but my IntelliSense is not working for LINQ stuff.
For example... I write this:
[CODE]....................
Then, if I type S. on the next line, the IntelliSense doesn't grab what it should for S (Only get Equals, GetHashCode, GetType, ReferenceEquals, and ToString, instead of the options I should get like Count, First, FirstOrDefault, etc...). If I Type S.First. then its the same thing, no IntelliSense that lists the available fields for S, just the standard options (Equals, GetHashCode, GetType, ReferenceEquals, and ToString). I should be seeing my column names in my table when I type S.FirstOrDefault.
So any ideas what is going on? When I type the code, for example, MessageBox.Show(S.FirstOrDefault.FirstName), it works perfectly. But it doesn't change the casing of the text (so it would read s.firstordefault.firstname) and no intellisense while doing it. But no errors. BTW - Everything works perfectly when creating a NEW VS 2010 application, it's just my projects upgraded from Visual Basic 2008 that have this issue.
I have the following linq query:
Dim q = From definition In definitionList _
Where definition.ValueDefName.Contains(criteria)[code]....
I have already looked into this answer: LINQ - dynamic WHERE clause?Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me using .net 4.0. When I attempt to pass the criteria string in it ask for a predicate. The end goal is to add any of these:
definition.ValueDefname.Contains(criteria)
definition.ValueDefDesc.Contains(criteria)
definition.Aliaslist.Contains(Criteria)
definition.StrategicInitiative.Contains(Criteria)
to be passed into the query depending on what checkboxes the user has selected. How can I create a dynamic where clause in linq to sql? Is there new syntax for passing in a where clause as a string?
I have this code to get images width and height from header file without full loading the image..I convert it automatically from C# to VB.NET by [url]....The source C# code here:http:[url]....
Now I need this code to work with .net framework 2.The code doesn't work after converting even with .NET 3.5
Imports System.Collections.Generic

I am trying to get Linq going on. I have a CustomClass named Ordr with the properties OrderID, EmployeeID, _ShipRegion
I do a simple query:
Dim query = From c In dbcontext.Orders _
Where c.EmployeeID = 2
Select New Ordr With { _
.OrderID = c.OrderID, _
.EmployeeID = c.EmployeeID, _
.Shipregion = c.ShipRegion}
Then I bind this query to a DataGridView:
DataGridView1.DataSource = query
Now, when I try to save any changes with dbcontext.SaveChanges() no changes are saved. OrderID is the primary key. How was I supposed to do it properly without loosing the ability to save changes?
I have a list of strings. For each string in that list, I want to prepend another string. I wrote a method to do it, but I was wondering if there was something already in .NET I could use to do this. It seems like something that could be built in, but I was not able to find anything.
Here is the method I wrote:
Private Function PrependToAllInList(ByRef inputList As List(Of String), ByRef prependString As String) As List(Of String)
Dim returnList As List(Of String) = New List(Of String)
For Each inputString As String In inputList
returnList.Add(String.Format("{0}{1}", prependString, inputString))
[code].....
It works, but I would rather use built in functions whenever possible.
im wounder how to make a string error like that in vb so if the user write echi and not echo on a string it will get a error like a other variant of this if richtextbox1.text = ("ecoi") then msgbox("string error") but only on 1 string
View 3 RepliesIf e.CommandLine.Count > 0 Then
Dim IncomingCommand As String = e.CommandLine.Item(0).ToString
If IncomingCommand.Substring(0, 2) = "-1" Then
form1.close()
End If
End If
I am trying to make the program close if the -1 string is sent with the program. See my installer allows for me to run certain programs before it actually installs, but it doesn't shut down copies of the program itself. So I have a next startup instance set to shut the program down if the -1 is received. But if the program is not running it starts up instead. This is not desired. form1.close doesn't work. e.cancel = true doesn't work, etc etc. What can I do to make the program not start during this instance.
I'm going to start a project so what I need to do is make something that is kinda like an email. I am working with the register part of it because just like an email you have to select who to send it to.

I am toiling with the best way of doing this. So far, I am not having much luck. I have used arrays quite successfully in Java, but I am not sure that this is the best way to go here. I would have to get how many lines there are and read each line. Make the changes, and then go on to the next line. I think scanning the document line by line using a loop is the best way. However, I am not sure.
Hopefully this question will have an easy answer; I've tried searching for the answer myself, but I don't know what to search for (I don't know what you would call this).
Is there a way to compare a string to see if it matches more than 1 value?
[Code]...
I have a database of tables that I needed to do some comparison work on and sql server is limited to the means of doing string comparisons. I put all the data into lists and thought of using [URL] or string.contains but does not seem like it is working right. It is large amount of data and I need to be able to make some matches in order to avoid the manual checking of each string. Here is sample data and code;
