VS 2008 Unable To Run The Application On Windows 7?
Apr 25, 2011
I have developed an application in VB.net 2008 having SQL Server 2000 as back end. I am running the application with MSDE 2000 on Windows XP. Now I have switched to Windows 7 from XP. I am unable to run the application on Windows 7 as it is not connecting to database.Can somebody help me to to run the application through MSDE 2000 without upgrading it to SQL EXPRESS 2008 on Windows 7. What I feel is that it could be caused by the Authentication Mode of MSDE 2000 in Windows 7.

What I have is on my form there are several text boxes. These text boxes are for user input and attached to each text box is a Private Sub txtBox1_KeyPress function. In that function I have some validation code to check that the user is inputing only what I want them to. And if it doesnt it will pop up a message box telling them so, then it is supposed to clear the text box so the user can try again. But no matter what I try, the text box does not clear it still keeps the last character typed (the invalid one).
Here is the code for one of the text boxes.
Private Sub txtLanIp_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles txtLanIp.KeyPress
Dim strEmpty As String = ""
If Char.IsDigit(e.KeyChar) = True Or Char.IsPunctuation(e.KeyChar) = True Or Char.IsControl(e.KeyChar) = True Then
'do nothing
[code]....
The commented methods at the bottom are some of the other things ive tried to make this work. The txtLanIp.text.clear() is what ive tried from the beginning. I have also tried setting the text to "", I even created an empty string and set the .Text value to it but no matter what it wont remove that character. I have also tried various trim(), len(), Select() functions, most either give me an 'index out of range error', a 'length cannot be less than zero' error or a general ExceptionOutOfBounds error. I am just tearing my hair out as to why the simple way doesnt work, there is no logical reason why and it gives no error it just doesn't clear the box.
I have also tried moving the validation to a _LostFocus but e.KeyChar isnt a valid method or property for that declaration, which doesn't surprise me but I wanted to try everything.I dont see how it would matter in this case but I am running Windows XP Pro SP3, though I also see the same behavior in Windows 7 64 bit ultimate sp1 and windows 7 64 bit pro.

I've been sporadically going back to over the course of a few weeks and am unable to resolve. In Windows 7 (I'm using the 64 bit professional edition) I am unable to drag and drop files. I know the code works as I've been using the application on a 32 bit XP for ages.I've set the allowdrop property for both the main form and the status strip.[code]I've knocked the UAC settings down a notch and this doesn't do anything either. Interestingly, it's not even showing any of the dragdrop effects when dragging files or outlook emails into them.

I have a unique situation in that I've developed a VB.NET application for AutoCAD. The way this works, you build your project into a dll and utilize AutoCAD API references when designing the project. From AutoCAD, a "Netload" command will load your dll into it's namespace to run. AutoCAD then essentially takes ownership of your application from here on out. The application is ran using a command defined in a method's attribute:
<CommandMethod("CommandNameForApp")>Public Sub MyCommand()
'Code Here
End Sub
Due to the heavy load of processing loops as it evaluates AutoCAD drawing data, processes this data, and generates many, many Excel reports, I've added a boolean property called Cancelled to my Progress class. When the user cancel's the process, this is seen by the process and further evaluation is ended and everything is cleaned up nicely. In order for this to work though, I have to implement Application.DoEvents. Without it, the Cancel feature will not work at all. With it, now instead of allowing the application to stay loaded, the Command method is fully closed.I have added a go-to point and simply verify that the application isn't closing because of a user-cancellation event. Here's what it looks like now:
<CommandMethod("WireShop")> Public Sub WireShopApplication()
'Initialize Configuration File Data
'Initializes ValidBlocks, MarginDistance, WindowDistance, and HelpFileName Properties
If ConfigurationFileInitialization() = False Then Exit Sub
[code].....
In my opinion, this seems a little hokey. However, I'm not that familiar with exactly what Application.DoEvents is doing in the background to understand how to "head it off at the pass".

I've been creating a small application and now I'm going to make a setup file for it. And I started doing this using Installshield. Here's a prtscreen of where I'm stuck: Since I've developed my Application in .Net, I don't know whether it can be installed on earlier versions of Windows such as Windows 98. Should I uncheck some options?

Within my application we store objects i.e images,word docs, etc etc. These are stored in a listview and when the user double clicks the item it launches the default application assigned to the file type i.e a bmp will launch paint, doc will launch word etc etc.
Everything works great in all versions of windows except the new Windows 7 where i am getting this error message:
Im guessing this is something to do with permissions etc, but can anybody shed more light on this and where to look?

I created new windows service with timer inside it for scheduler purpose and it can run successfully but it can't run other application (ex: notepad) when the timer elapsed. I can see the process running in Task Manager but the notepad windows is not open. I used this code in timer_elapsed event.
AppLauncher oAppLauncher = new AppLauncher(@"C:WindowsRegedit.exe");
new Thread(new ThreadStart(oAppLauncher.StartProcess)).Start();
where applauncher is a Class
Class AppLauncher {
string myAppPath = string.Empty;
[Code] .....
When I build windows App I can see Notepad open using the same code.

We have an application that works well on XP/Pro, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server (32 bit) but is problematic on Windows 2008 Server (64 bit). The application uses an unsigned activeX control which may or may not be related to the problem. To install we need to add the program name and regsvr32 as DEP exceptions. Once that is done the application installs correctly and operates normally except when the application closes.
If a user clicks the 'exit' button our code basically says 'unload me' (where me = the main form of the application) and there is no code in the form_unload section of the program.
Everything works well on every Windows platform except Win 2008 64 bit where we get
APPCRASH
Application Name: PDFPrint.exe
Application Version: 10.10.0.18
Application Timestamp: 4d238253
[Code].....
After we continue to close the program we see a message box with run time error 216 at 00002B24 message.

I'm a relatively seasoned VB (COM) vet but this is my first VB.Net application and as is my luck a web services application feeding off a site that I can't publicly mention nor can I post any code that may expose the site.
So, here's the problem. I have written a simple form and have 2 buttons. 1 button simply asks the webservice for it's version. This works no problem. I was able to load the web reference using their supplied WSDL file for this "version" class. Now that I have that working I think "GREAT, that was straight forward. I have my credentials, urls, etc working, the rest of this should be just as straight forward." (See where I jinxed myself here?)
Anyway, I move onto the next WSDL and set of classes and get that reference added no problem. (Man that took a LONG time, like 20 minutes.) I then build my "Get my order data" code syntaxes on the prescribed exposed classes and run my project just to see what errors I get. The "run" process takes almost 45 minutes to an hour..... It's as if the app is getting the WSDL set all over again but doing it over and over..... I have no clue what's going on.
I've tried to disable all the Windows 7 "potential" issues, UAC, firewall, etc, but these changes don't help. Anti virus, spyware, etc all these are off and no difference. I'm running VS2008 as an Admin, right click "run as admin", and have complete control over this machine. Any ideas, suggestions, etc are VERY welcome and I am happy to expose as much of this application as I can providing I can stay with in the rules of the confidentiality contract.
