VS 2010 Auto Update Application Via A File Location Path & Pausing Splash Screen?
Jan 8, 2011
1. Just looking for some general help on how to auto update my application via a file location path (e.g. I have a HTML file containing the current file version and the .exe file to download)
What I need is to read in the HTML file version - DONE Check file version vs HTML file stream input - DONE Replace current .exe file with new .exe file - HAVING ISSUES WITH THIS
I know I have to close the application and then replace the old exe file with the new exe file then restart the application but looking for the best/safest way this can be done
2. Basically what I want is during my Splash screen which runs for 5 seconds I want to check if a network drive is mapped.
if not, pause splash screen ask user for address of drive, map drive then un-pause splash screen and continue with load how do I check if a network drive is mapped? and how do I pause the splash screen?

My objective is to have a splash screen that displays a status and steps a progress bar. I have created a custom splash screen form with all the controls that I require. Note: This form has not been designated
as the splash screen in the application settings. I tried that earlier and it got me nowhere. On the main form's load event I show the splash screen. All that seems to work. What doesn't work is getting an update to the splash screen. Actually the function gets called and the label control text gets changed
(I think) but the splash screen never shows the update. I have tried to refresh the control and the form itself but that doesn't work. After spending all morning on the search engines I tried using a delegate but that doesn't seem to

I was trying to figure out the cause for this . What i understand is :
1. .net starts splash screen in different thread.
2. Someway when main form load event is finished or about to finish , then splash screen is disposed.
Now in this case , i think dispose method of the splash screen gets fired from the main form , even when splash screen initialization is not finished yet.

I need that my application have a splash screen, this splash must update a label with messages that i sent from the main form constructor, in the end of the constructor i need to close the splash, the splash must accept key presses, so if the user press some keys I'll show the login screen, by default the login it's the same of the machine, and this is useful for debugging/tests purposes.Basically i need to send text to another thread, and get a boolean value from the same thread to know if the user pressed the correct combination of keys to show the login form.

I know one can select Spash Screen as the application startup as per this illustration. I can't do that however because the application is called by another program which passes in parameters via Process.Start(). Depending on the passed in arguments, I need to either
Go Directly to the MainForm or Go First to a Splash Screen which will then to the the Mainform after 5 seconds.
I definitely need Step 2 above because of the slow startup time of creating an SocketConnection and the population of some Custom Controls only after the Socket connection has been established.
Would I use a startup class or module and then use that as the application startup 'form' which could be establishing the SocketConnection while also launching a Splash Screen?

I have an application with a splash screen which gets shown before the application starts. One of the requirements of the application is to allow users to restart (or atleast clear the form) so that other test cases can be ran. Because there are so many forms and variables, we elected to simply call Application.Restart() to accomplish this.
What we would like to do now is disable the Splash Screen when Application.Restart() is called. That is, only show the Splash Screen when the application is initially started, not when it is restarted.

I have a Windows Form Application to which I added a splash screen created using the splash screen template. I also added an MDI Parent Form. In my project properties, I chose the splash screen and the MDI Parent as the loading form.
I want the MDI Parent to load Maximized, so I changed the WindowState Property in the list to do just that. Now here is the problem:
If I leave the WindowState set to Normal, the splash screen loads, does its thing, closes, then loads my MDI Parent just like it is supposed to, BUT, if I set the WindowState of the MDI Parent to Maximized, the splash screen displays for about a second, the MDI Parent loads on top of the splash screen, and the splash screen finishes in the background and then closes.
I tried giving Focus back to the splash screen in the Lost Focus event but that didn't work. I know splash screen is still open and working when it gets covered up because I can hit ALT+TAB and see it just before it closes on its own like its supposed to. I also never adjusted any of it's time settings or any other settings.
How do I keep the splash screen on top while my MDI form is Maximized? or how do I delay the MDI until the splash screen has done its job? I dont understand why I am getting this result.

To create splash screen before InitializeComponent, the WithEvents statement for the BackgroundWorker component needs to be moved from the Form's Designer.vb file into the constructor as indicated in the first commented lines of the constructor below.

I would like some information on pausing my application until a file with a certain extension has been created. What hapens is, my application creates an input file that is sent to an external app that returns a file with a different file extension. In my application i then extract data from this new file.I was thinking i could use a timer to "hold up" my app, but then i started reading about event handlers and catchers. What i have tried is using an If FileExists loop but i get a file not found exception. How should i use the file create event? By looking in the folder and "waiting" for the file to be created?

I have an MDI parent screen that loads on startup and a lot of child forms that load when opening. So as the child forms load there's a lot of flashing and it looks really ugly. Once they're loaded all I have to do is use a bring to front, maximized command and it works smoother than closing a form and opening a new one every time a different form is selected. I've tried creating a splash screen, minimizing the forms on load, etc and everything still works in order so first the splash screen then the forms load.
How would you set it up so a splash screen stays on top of all other forms for like 5 seconds while the forms load in the background without seeing them load? Right now the screen shows then when it's done it moves on to step 2 which is loading the child forms. If no splash screen, how do I make it load so you don't see all the child forms opening at once?

I have a stand alone application "test.exe" on a Windows 7 operating system.I have an application "test.exe" made in Visual basic 8.0.I have an "Auto Update" function . Call this function from "test.exe". In the first line in "test.exe".This function does the following:
1. This checks whether the current version is older than the version on specific site, if so:
1a. Removed all *. old
1b. Rename test.exe to test.old
1c. dowload new test.exe
I'm afraid I get an error when I rename "test.exe" to "test.old" because "test.exe" is now active. How can I prevent this or what else should I do?

I'm developing an application in vb.net. You drag any type of file onto the exe, and a window pops up with some options for the file, then it saves the file to a different location, works some SQL magic, etc. It works great for the most part. The only issue I've found is that if the path of the file contains any spaces, the application will crash immediately with the error window:[URl]..I'm using: Private filename as String = Command$ This is located right inside my form's class declaration, not within a sub/function.Without this line, my program runs fine (although useless, without accessing the file).I've also tried (I think this was it, I don't have the code with me at the moment): Private filename as String = Environment.CommandLine So, in vb.net, is there a way to drag a file onto an exe and use that path name, even if there are spaces in the path name?

How can I search the local disk for a file type and copy the full path to a new location. I am trying to write a backup program that will copy all pst files to the server while maitaining the structure, so if there is a pst located in "C:pstuserpersonal1.pst" it would create the folder "\serverpstuserpersonal1.pst" and copy the file to the correct location. I would need it to do this for each pst on the hard drive no matter the location. The user running the program will not have admin rights, so it will need to skip files it cannot access.

Currently I'm using a third party file hosting website (like mediafire) to upload my program and I update the link every time a new version is out.I know there are some ways to autoupdate the program but most of them need to own a website, which currently I don't have.So I was wondering if there could be a way to make an autoupdate using sites like mediafire.Example: I always delete old version of the program, on mediafire when someone try to access a deleted file page he gets redirected on a page which says "file deleted or invalid". So if the program find out that the file link redirect to that page it should inform the user about the new version.
