VS 2010 Interop And Modal Forms?
Feb 9, 2012
I have a .NET application that calls a method in a COM component to show a dialog. Unfortunately, you can't pass the .NET form to the COM component to set the owner form without a type mismatch:
_ComForm.Show vbModal, _DotNetForm
So, what that means is the form is displayed without a parent form. The problem is, if the user launches the COM form and then while the dialog is shown, clicks to another application and then returns to my application, the COM form is now behind the .NET owner form and most users won't know how to find that window. Is there any way around this?

I've got a "Loading" form which I display as a modal form when doing lengthy processes. I'm using the below to keep the form centred within the child form performing the process. However, when minimisingmaximising the "Loading" form appears before the parent making it look a little unprofessional. Anything I can do about that (Delay it appearing or attaching it in a different way)?

Is there a way to specify what forms are Locked when opening a Modal Dialog? I want to have a specific form available even if a Modal dialog is opened. The form in question is a child form (Accessible from the Windows application bar), that is created from the main application form. The Modal Dialog should only lock the main application form, and not the secondary window. Is it possible to make a secondary form independent from the main application form?

I'm trying to create a child form that helps the user to enter data for a field in the parent form. I want this child form to be modal, but I don't know what I need to do to make this form modal. Perhaps there's a different type of item I need to use; if so,

I have a project with several forms. I need some of them to be in a modal window. How do you set this to be true? Also, when some of the forms are shown I need one of the buttons on the previous screen to be active.
I have tried:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Form.ShowDialog()
Button.Select()
End Sub

I have created a VB.NET Class Library that exposes some COM Interop sub routines. These in turn show various forms that are contained within the Class Library. When the forms are shown from VB6 they do not inherit the visual styles of the operating system and act like VB6 controls.
I gather that this probably by design but is there some way to force/control visual styles manually in the .NET assembly? I would imagine that if I use a manifest in my VB6 app then everything will use the correct style but I would like to be able to control this myself if possible because we are using 3rd party controls in VB6 that do not require a manifest.

Visual Basic Interop Video Series This how-to video series is focused on the Interop Forms Toolkit and working with Visual Basic .NET and Visual Basic 6 together. The Interop Forms Toolkit allows Visual Basic developers to migrate their Visual Basic 6 applications over to .NET using a phased migration strategy. Instead of having to convert the entire VB6 application at once, the toolkit enables .NET Forms and User Controls to run directly in Visual Basic 6 applications so that you can build the pieces that you need over time.
Download the Code: Videos 13
You will need: Visual Studio and the Interop Forms Toolkit 2.0 in addition to Visual Basic 6.0

I've been following a codeproject article on using the interop forms toolkit (basically a way for developers to slowly upgrade their VB6 projects to .net by allowing .net components run in VB6)

While the .NET form is working fine in all other testing projects and environments, I've found that the Form_load event is actually firing twice once it's in executing in the VB6 runtime.Not only annoying, its forcing my initialization code to execute twice (causing all kind of problems on the second run).

I have a parent form that can open a modal form which contains a populated listbox. In the parent form, I can use DialogResult to detect which item in the listbox the user chose in the modal form. But I also want the modal form to return a string that was generated in the modal form.
EDIT: Ok, I suppose some code is necessary? In I would like to return the "longPath" string variable(near bottom of second pic) to form1(first pic).

I have a parent form, which can lanch a dialog box. A wrong selection in the box launches a message box with an error message. When the message box pops up, the dialog box disappears, so the messagebox is sitting on top of the parent form.Once the user clicks "OK" in the messagebox, the box disappears, and only the parent form remains.How do I make it so that the dialog box remains when the messagebox is displayed? And also, I want the dialog box to remain when the user closes the message box. The user should have the option to make the right selection in the dialogbox once the messagebox disappears.I tried to hunt for a property for the dialog box to achieve this, but couldn't find any.
Here is the code in the parent form to lauch the dialog box, and to also launch the messagebox, when the user has made a selection in the dialogbox:[code]Am I having this problem because all the code to launch the dialog and message boxes reside in the parent form? If I put the code to launch the messagebox in the dialog box, would that make the dialog box persistent when the messagebox is launched? I am putting all the code in the parent form because it can process the DialogResult.

I'm looking forward to reading and adding more to the community here. I've created a text based rpg. Next semester we are learning Visual Basic. I'm on winter break and I would like to get a head start on my learning. I've been working on creating some forms and message boxes. What is throwing me off, is that I have a good feel for doing coding so that I get functionality the will produce effects in a console. Coding the forms is a bit confusing for me. Is this something that others have run into? Is their some good primers for VB? I don't have my text books yet.

well until a few day ago. I don't know what I have introduced to cause the problem but now, whenever I load the project, VS 2010 (SP1) crahes. If I delete the project's suo file, the project loads (really quickly) and all is well until I exitVS 2010. When I re-run it and try to load the project, it crashes again unless I delete the suo file.The program can be built for x64 and x86. Now, when I reload the project (after deleting the suo file), it comes up in Debug - Any CPU mode. I can change from Debug to Release and from Any CPU to x86 but if I try and change from x86 to x64, VS 2010 crashes.This is not always the case though. If I build the x86 version and then switch to x64, all is well and I can build the x64 version. Obviously, there's something wonky going on.

I have an ajax modal panel with a div on it that I access from the server and dynamically insert a table into, by showing the values of various controls on the calling form.My problem is this, it works fine if all my controls are doing auto postback, but it ruins the user experience, because tabbing through the controls, the controls lose focus during the automatic postback.Is there a way to have my target control perform a postback, before it puts up the modal, so I can retrieve not posted controls data in the modal?
