How do I use line numbers? For example, I'm reading a text file and I'll need to get the line number of the line "=====LINE=====" somewhere in the text file, and I'll need to get the text of the next line (+1 of the previous line, but I'm not sure how to do readline(line number)).

View 6 RepliesI came across a post a while back which showed a custom rich textbox control which had line numbers in its margin. Similar to what you woudl see if you we coding in the VB designer and you had your line numbers viewable.
I think it was two controls in one (i.e. two textboxes: one for the numbers, and the other for the text). However I cannot remember where I saw it.
In the code window near the line numbers which are set to show, a vertical band of green exists with a short band of yellow which seems to be near the part where I am entering code.
What is the significance and usefuleness of this?

I am looping through a text file and reading and then parsing each line.. then, inserting into a sql server. The problem is, I am getting every other line. Any thoughts? I read another post on here that is similar and it says that that person was calling the ReadLine twice... which makes sense. I just cannot spot where it is happening.

What I have stored in my file is values related to an account. (Just testing, not going to be used commercially). What I need is to draw the values for the username and password, by going through each new line, but .peek() doesn't seem to work for me.

On data retrieval, it comes out as number instead of text. Im guessing ASCII?Why is it doing this? Do I need to convert each ASCII number into a character?
I am reading text from a file (*.TXT) 1 line at a time using streamreader. As I read that input, I am looking for specific starting and ending character strings ("<" and ">") . When I find those strings, I would like to select the characters between those string and have it set to BOLD and BLUE before appending that input line to the contents of a richtextbox.The only way I have found to do this is to first append the input line to the richtextbox then use the richtextbox.selection (color and font) methods to change the text.

The streamreader works fine until the file is more than 100,000 bytes long.It reads until it reaches this point and then just ends. No error message, it just reads to this point which happens to be 2 fields out of 6 in the database stream. My question is - does the streamreader have a limit? And if so what is a workaround?

I'm writing a program that basically loads an entire text file into a streamreader variable, then reads this variable line by line and parses and writes a line into a new text file. I'm VERY new and my knowledge is mostly self-taught, but I can't seem to get out of this one. It works for smaller files, but it appears to reach a limit in characters at some point because in a file of 900 lines, it stops writing about halfway through 800 and there are no errors, the program actually completes and the message box pops up.
There are a few things with this code I already know I should fix, such as creating the new text file name, it's messy, I just don't know how.

What is the best method to get towards the end of a file in a Stream Reader. In my case, I have data at the end I want, but the rest of the data I don't need. If the file is very large instead of reading line by line until eof, is there a better way to get to the end?
View 2 RepliesI am using streamreader and streamwriter to read a text file , change the text, then write to the same text file. This all happens in a loop every second or so.Currently I use:

To me this seems like a waste, and should only have to be dimentioned once. If I try to run both statements in the beginning, outside of the loop, the second statement wont work because the "file is allready open". Am I missing something or am I doing it correctly to begin with?

If the first line contains 4 or more numbers, it will use it. After each loop it will delete line 1. So it repeats for the next line. When my code reaches the 3rd line, and it doesnt find 4 or more numbers it needs to delete the line.

I'm trying to show the line numbers with a stack trace when an exception is thown in my app.
This code is in the UnhandledException of ApplicationEvents:
e.Exception.StackTrace.ToString
It currently returns:btnOK_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) at with no line number at the end.
I have set the project to create debugging info in Project Properties > Compile > Advanced compile options > Generate Debug Info = pdb-Only, and deployed the PDB file with the app, but still I don't get any line numbers.
I'm using VS2008 Standard, vb.net.
