VS 2010 Combobox Auto-complete Dropdown Won't Close
Mar 4, 2011
[Code]....
The auto complete dropdown will NOT close, no matter what I do. When I load the form, the dropdown is down with all the options displayed. I can type anything, and the options will narrow down, until an option is selected, then all the options reappear in the list. If I select an option, hit tab, enter, any key or mouse click, the list still doesn't close. If I change the DropDownStyle to DropDown or DropDownList, it works fine.

I have a ComboBox in my WinForm which has data from SQL server (used LINQ to bring up the data). I'd like to have an option just like AutoComplete in VB.NET but not only by the first letter but for a search LIKE.

I'm having troubles with my datagridview. Id like to use a combobox that you could type into and (as you are typing) would update the drop down list with the ability to use wildcardsThe list is populated with a table in my database. I know how to do this using just a combobox on a form, but I'm still learning everything with datagridviews. Is there a way to do this with a combobox in datagridview? If not, is there a way to do it any other way (i.e. using a textbox and having something pop up like the autocomplete windows)? I really would like to have the ability to use wildcards with this

I would like a fulltext autocomplete functionality for a Combobox. Built-in autocomplete only filters those items, that match the written text from the first letter. Is there any 3rd party components that has fulltext autocomplete? Or do I need to make functions myself?

I have auto complete functionality in combo box ,it works properly but there is little issue ,I made the suggestion list appear for the text length more than 3 chars ,but the list appears after the length of 4 char (when user enters the fifth char of the text) which means when the code executed in the first time the list doesn't appear here is the code in Text_Changed Event
Private Sub TxtItem_TextChanged(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles TxtItem.TextChanged
If Trim(TxtItem.Text) <> "" And Trim(TxtItem.Text).Length > 3 Then
'Autocomplete
[code].....
Note : This issue causes the application exit (sometimes) on Windows XP, but Doesn't affect on Windows 7

I have a combobox (cmbCharge1) that gets populated by a text file. Inside the combobox, the data inside is laid out like this: 41-1A-1303: EXPIRED REGISTRATION Now, autocomplete works fine, if I start typing in the statute (like the 41 part). But what I need is for it to autocomplete based of whats after the: So if I type in EX, then everything starting with EX pops up.

I have a small HR app.First step for user is to select the employee.I wanted a single combobox (autocomplete , drop-down), where the user can start typing either firstname lastname or nickname (these are 3 different fields in an SQL DB).At first, I would have the user check a checkbox near the combobox to select what they would be searching by (first, last, nick name), but then I thought - someone could probably help me with an example of not having to select which name type they are searching for, but just start typing and the combobox would autocomplete based on whichever name ?

Dim c As System.Drawing.Color

I have a problem with the auto-complete behaviour of comboboxes in VB.NET (with the .NET framework 2.0).I am using a combobox to type in numeric values, and its DropDown list to suggest possible numeric values. This list is sorted in ascending order, for example {"10","92", "9000", "9001"}.The combobox properties are set as follow:
AutoCompleteMode: SuggestAppend
AutoCompleteSource: ListItems
DropDownStyle: DropDown
Sorted: False
The DropDown list is simply filled like this:
myCombobox.Items.Add("10")
myCombobox.Items.Add("92")
myCombobox.Items.Add("9000")
myCombobox.Items.Add("9001")
When I don't type anything, the order of values of the DropDown list is correct, in original/ascending order. However, when I start typing something, the suggested values in the DropDown list get sorted (alphanumerically): if I type "9", the list of suggestions becomes {"9000", "9001", "92"}.I would like to prevent this behaviour to get the values of the list in the original/ascending order. I can't figure out how...A possible work-around would be to pad with zeroes the values in the list, e.g. {"0010", "0092", "9000", "9001"} but I would like to avoid this.

We have a combo box where users enter a part number. Auto-complete is on and we're in SuggestAppend mode with the source set as ListItems. The part number is in a format something like this:-
XX XX-XXX
2 chars, a space, 2 chars, a hyphen, 3 chars. The format does change slightly for different types of parts but the combination of characters (ignoring the spaces and hyphens) is always unique. The format is just a presentation issue but, for business/political reasons, we cannot 'flatten' it to just the characters.
Our users would like to be able to just type the characters and have the auto-complete work. However, they still want the display to show the spaces and hyphens, both in the list and in the 'textbox' part of the combo when they make a selection. So the list might look like:-
AB KN-TRD
AB KN-TTN
AB PR-TRD
[code]....
the user types AB, the list now looks like:-
AB KN-TRD
AB KN-TTN
AB PR-TRD
AB PR-TTN
Now the user types K (nb, they have not typed a space), the list now looks like:-
AB KN-TRD
AB KN-TTN
At this point it's acceptable for the textbox to show ABK (no space) but as soon as the the user makes a selection the textbox needs to contain the spaces and hyphens from the part number selected. My hunch is that there must be some sort of comparator function in the combobox I can override but I'm struggling to find the details as to how.

is there an option to retain Intellisense suggestions but turn off the auto-complete completely in VB 2010? Since upgrading to Visual Studio 2010, I find that Intellisense's auto-complete is far too eager to replace code. It often happens that while typing a section of code I will find that I need a new variable. Rather than back up in the code and create the variable, I want to be able to type on and add the Dim statement once my train of thought has reached a good stopping point. However, as soon as I try to use an undefined variable or method or property, Intellisense jumps in to replace what I have typed with gibberish.
I like Intellisense showing what methods, properties and parameters are available; however I would like to turn off the feature which automatically triggers auto-complete whenever I type ahead.

Does anyone know how to adjust the "speed" of input on an autocomplete combobox?
I guess the complaint from our two-fingered typers is they can't type fast enough and get frustrated.

I have just installed VS 2010 Premium on my Windows Vista Machine. I've noticed that in VS2008 when I typed for eg " Public property MyProperty() as string " and pressed the enter..I was getting automatically the expected result. Meaning by that , that VS2008 was generating for me the rest of the code. [code] In Visual Studio 2010 I am not getting this anymore. What happened ? Is this feature still working in VS 2010 ?

I have an app that uses a textbox with an autocomplete source and have come to realize that there may be times (to be decided at run time) where the list should be read-only. So ideally at run time if the list was considered R/O and the user's last typed character resulted in a no match, I would throw out the last key and go back to where we last had a match. When not in R/O mode, I would simply create a new entry on the list. Turns out the AutoCompleteStringCollection has a IsReadOnly property which is ReadOnly. So, when would it ever be true? Where does it dervive the value from?
So, the next step was that I thought that maybe a textbox is not the right control to use in this situation; maybe a combobox is. I notice that a combobox has an IsEditable and IsReadOnly properties that seem promising. I swithch the textbox control to a combobox and can't find the properties. I realize they are supported in Framework 3.0 and 3.5 and I am targeting 2.0. So I decide to bite the bullet and raise the target, but still can't access the properties for the combobox; what else do I need to do.And finally, when I am fooling around with the combobox set to 'simple' mode and select an item from the autocomplete list and hit enter, the combobox ends up blank; which seems to be a bug that was reported several years ago and still has not been fixed!

In VB.NET for the combo box, I have set the autocomplete mode to "SuggestAppend" and autocomplete source to "ListItems". Its working as expected. But the width of the autosuggest dropdown box is not same as that of combo box and so it looks weird.I tried changing the value dropdown width property but it changes the value of normal dropdown box (seen after clicking down arrow on combobox), and not the autosuggest dropdown box.So what code or property needs to be set to make autosuggest dropdown box the same width as that of combobox width?

So I was reading a bit on AutoComplete of textboxes in VB.NET, but I can't really understand where these are stored? Is it a fully built in feature, or do I have to write some code for it to work? I've found the AutoCompleteMode and AutoCompleteSource properties of textboxes. But I want to append whatever I've written in the textbox to the autocomplete source. Do I connect the source to My.Settings or something
