In my project i have different users lets say 100 users. My problem is most probably authentication. What i wanted to achieve is this;1. When user1 creates an account (saved database) with the following details
name: user1
lastname: user1
When he/she logging in into the system that information must be viewed by him ONLY. (authentication)
2. If user2 logging in he/she can't view the information of user1 (obviously).
I have a list of .txt, .doc, .pdf on my listview. How do i code this problem;
1. When i double-click the item (sample.txt) on my listview it will open in a notepad.
2. When i double click the item (sample.docx or sample.doc) it will open the MS word and shows me the things written on the particular item.

I developed a small application which accesses a MS access database on my computer using VB.net. I developed the program on windows xp 32 bit. At the moment I am using windows 7 64 bit and the program simply will not run. I get a null reference exception when I try to do anything to the database. I have narrowed this down i THINK to the db provider. I was using Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; and tried using Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;. Neither seems to work. The path to my database is 100% correct. This is the error I am getting:
Null reference exception was unhandled.Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Like I say the program runs fine on the windows xp machine. If it helps the access database file extension is mdb.
I am very confused about the database type to be used in my vb.net application. I have been using SSCE database, but for that user has to download and install SSCE, which many of my users do not want. If I use Access, the security issue is very very serious.

I should point out that I dont have a great deal of experience with SQL.I'm not really 100% sure where to start. Most of the guides I've found tend to assume your accessing an existing SQL database and I need to set one up from scratch. I'm not sure if I'm even setting SQL server up correctly. point me in the right direction on where to get started. A good, up to date tutorial would be great.
For my purposes the SQL database will only be written to from the local machine but there will also be another machine writing to this database.I'm currently using Visual basic Express 2010 and SQL Server Express 2008 R2, mostly because they are the most recent when I googled it.

It is a database application using SQL and Visual Basic 2005 from visual Studio.
I get an error Value cannot be null. Parameter name: context.When I get this error which accumulate 3 or 4 times in design mode, on an open form. some of the properties disappears for the textboxes like dock, buinding and so on. Does anyone knows what this error means.

However, once I install it, there seems to be no connection with the Database.The Forms give me the Oledb error as Im using Access. However, the login form seems to connect with the database. I have an Access Database, which I connect to using the Microsoft .Jet OleDB provider in VB from Visual Studio 2008.For some reason, whenever I make any change to the code (so that the project builds again), the data in the database completely disappears. I can only assume this means it's remaking the database every time. Note that it does this every time it builds, not just when I connect to it in the code.In my project, this is the database I connect to with the connection string, but there's also another duplicate of the same database in my Debug directory that changes to match the first database every time.The problem only started when I remade the access file to move some columns around and then reconnected through VS a couple of weeks ago.
View 2 RepliesI create a new Windows Forms Application project in VB.NET without changing any of the settings or labels. Then I click on "Add Data Source" and go through the steps in my programming book. Except that Visual Studio is crashing with a message stating that VB encountered a problem...checking for causes...restarting VB.
Sometimes I get to click the "Debug and Run" button before this happens; other times, it occurs before I move all the labels in form from the data source; and still other times, it happens when I click the "Stop Debugging" button.
I have tried removing VB and reinstalling it, but this still is not helping. (If it matters, I'm getting my copy of VB from [URL]

View 2 RepliesI have a Visual Basic application that I use to access an SQL 2008 database. When I add a record to my table everything appears to be fine. As long as I keep visual studio running the data remains in the database. But if I exit visual studio and then reopen visual studio the data in the table is gone. I can reenter the data and again everything look fine. When I created this application I selected my SQL Server database from the Add New Item dialog. I selected service-based database. Instead of creating the database from the server explorer. Are there settings I need to change when a database is created this way?
I basically want to make this in my application, so our technicians have an easier time installing our software. So far, I made a form with 4 text boxes: Server name, user name, password, and a combo-box to select a database.Everything was pretty easy until the database selection code. Microsoft's wizard is very efficient, there's no wait time when the database combo box is being filled.[code]That code gets the databases just fine, but obviously if an exception happens the whole screen locks up and it might take a while to recover depending on what the database error is. I am trying to write a Project to keep track of my favorite sports teams and scores and store and retrieve the data from a database. I am using vb.net and accdb files. I am able to connect to the tables( 3 tables Players'Keep track of individual stats',OpposingTeams'Keep track of who my team played',Games'matches between the two teams') and Visual studio made it easy to display the teams in comboboxes but this is as far as i can get.
I am wondering how to have a textbox query the Games table and "insert a record into the table, thus creating a primary key and returning the primary key to visual studio and display it in the texbox"

* Once the user design's each screen to his taste by placing various controls on the form, he should be able to save the form as a screen. Of course I have to provide functionality for each of the controls such as if he drags a button on to the form, he should be able to specify what action it has to perfom when clicked when the application is put into run mode. Quite similar to regular windows form button.
* My application should have two modes: a DESIGN MODE, where user can drag, drop controls and specify what they should do when put into RUN MODE. This is quite similar to MS Visual Studio designer.
* Last but not least is to be able to access the application via the browser with the same look and feel his desktop version.

Will i be able to successfully install 2010 beta 2 side by side 2008? because i want to test 2010 features and some development toolkits such as silverlight while i don't want to uninstall my visual studio 2008 professional.
View 2 RepliesI have a Visual Basic project and when working and modifying code, the compiler will crash and then a message will say something like "Microsoft visual studio encountered a problem and was shut down." I've tried editing code from the solution and the project. Both produce the error. Usually occurs when adding an "IF...Then..." condition. May work for hours but then crash. Solution will compile and build.
