What Kind Of Handheld Device / OS To Use To Interface With A Win Forms / SQL Server Express App
Oct 29, 2010
I'm currently working on an VB.net application using Win forms and SQL Server Express 2008. One of the major functions of our program is to generate work orders for field engineers. These engineers typically work in a factory and have to walk around the factory to complete these work orders doing things such as recording pressures and voltages of certain equipment. Right now they are printing out the work orders and writing down these values then entering them into the computer when they get back from doing the work.
We would like them to have some sort of handheld device we could push their work orders out to that would allow them to enter values/complete work orders and then come back and sync up with our app. Something like an ipod touch or maybe a bit larger seems like a good kind of device. Not really sure what kind of device would work for this and what OS it should run. I'm guessing it will be easiest if I can get something that can run SQL server on it. Also, how would I implement something like this?
I have an application that I am running on a Panasonic H1 handheld device, that is used at remote locations. I have a database on this device (SQL Server 2005) to help with the data entry process. Because the H1 can be slow (only 2GB ram), when this application starts, I load the data into a global data set. As this data is loading I display a progress bar letting the user know what's going on. This works quite well.
On my main form, the user has the ability to enter data into a text box, and press a button that will open up another form. The data that was entered into the first form's text box will be displayed in the second form's text box with a datagridview below showing results that matched what was typed in. Also, the user does not have to enter any data in the first form's text box, just hit the search button, and all records of the table will be displayed in the second form's datagridview. Then as they start entering data in the second form's text box, any data in the table matching what is entered is displayed.
This is how I am binding the data in the second form's datagridview :
objBS = New BindingSource objBS.DataSource = g_objDS.Tables("nsi") dgvSampleID.DataSource = objBS
Now, in the search form, let's say I type '27190' into the text box, only 3 records exist in the SQL Server table therefore only these 3 records will be displayed in my datagridview :
27190-001 27190-002 27190-003
The code to perform this 'auto complete' is in the TextChanged for the text field :objBS.Filter = "sample_id like '" + Me.txtSampleID.Text + "%'"Now, when a I double-click one of the rows, the form closes and the first form then has several fields filled in based on the row selected. When I clear out the text box in the first form, then press the search button, I am expecting to see the entire database in the second form's datagridview. However, what I am seeing is the 3 rows from above.
When I run the app in debug mode, I verify that the 'g_objDS.Tables("nsi")' does in fact have all the records in the table I want to search. Yet when I assign the objBS.datasource = g_objDS.Tables("nsi"), objBS.count = 3, representing the 3 records from above. My question is why am I not seeing the entire database.
I want to develop an application in VB.net for handheld device(Ticket machine in Bus and train). Is it possible to develop in Vb net. Whether i need windows OS in my handheld device or any runtime environment only needed. My hardware is ARM processor.I want to run my application as standalone in my machine.
I am trying to build a user control that will do exactly what the SQL 2005 Connect to Server interface do, eventually create a connection string and store in a app.config file. It should allow user to select server type, server name, authentication, user name and password. It should also automatically load available servers and domain login by default.
i'm starting to create a project in wich I will be able to download all kind of files from an FTP server. I'm using this code to upload files and it works.
[Code]...
But I can't understand how do I do a download from the server. I did the same project in vb6 with inet1 and I'm new at vb.net so be patiente
I'm trying to build a VB application that will interface with a USB device that uses a LibUSB-32 driver. I haven't had much luck with google search or looking through MSDN yet as most of the content focues on HID devices. I know the Vendor ID & Product ID of the USB Device. I also know the 16-byte protocol used to communicate with the device.
Most of my experience has been with serial communication which is why I'm here posing this question to help build the "tunnel" from .Net to the LibUSB-32 driver. As soon as the application is sending/receiving data with the USB device, I can handle everything else. I'm not asking anyone to write the code, but more to let me know what I should be looking to do to complete the task.
I am developing a software that will monitor/poll serveral Modbus/TCP devices on a network.
I have managed to connect to one device using VB.Does anyone know of a driver or perhaps a 3rd party software I could use that will enable me to connect to more than one Modbus/TCP device?
I have USB device that is detected as human interface device (HID). The device has one button on it. I want to have more of same devices attached to one PC. I would like to simulate a click on that device (it is not a mouse!). It should be simple using Windows API, but I just can't seem to find an example or at least function that does that (I successfully found code that takes position of a MOUSE, and sends click to a MOUSE, but I need that for my HID). What i really need is an example how to simulate click on HID (something like joystick).Second question is a bit more complicated and I can't find a solution. The HID when button is clicked returns data (5-6 bytes). But data returned is immediately printed to the screen (like i typed it on keyboard) and it is followed by CR, however no data is left on clipboard. I don't know how to get that data to my program. Detecting keystrokes using Windows API (something like keylogger), or to make a control (richtextbox) and retrieve data from that control? Thou important notice is that my program is complicated, involves multithreading (cross-thread operations are a mess) and is TIME CRITICAL (as much as it can be on Windows - you get what I mean), so cross-thread access of control will slow me down a lot or even just won't work. Something like this:[code]Even if this problem is solved it still makes it buggy because user should be able to use GUI all the time.
Is it possible to connect to a database on SQL Server R2 Express from Visual Basic Express? I am following a set of tutorial videos done in SQL Server 2005, but cannot seem to connect to create the database. I have created the database in SQL Server R2 Express, but cannot connect. Is there a work around?
Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
I am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.
there Dream in Code Community! Im an okay programmer as far as skill right now I am still learning as we all are I need some help from some experienced VB.NET programmers in the community, Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords.
It's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework? It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database. To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed. What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.
I have a new requirement to sync a DVR to an NTP server, but not sure how. I have googled and forum searched, but a lot is VB6 stuff and also for sync'ing a local computer's time. This requirement is for sync'ing time for a Digital Video Recorder on the network.
I am working on a way to send commands to an Arduino board from a web site. The Arduino board is connected to the computer via a USB port (a COM port).
I have managed to connect and control the board using a VB.NET program. I also wrote a VB.NET class that can instantiate a COM connection and send and receive messages.
My next step is to basically create a program that will act as a proxy between my web server (IIS 7 running on Windows Vista) and the Arduino board. When a user gets to my ASP.NET page, the page will then send a command to the proxy to open the COM connection. When the connection is open and ready then I can send commands to the proxy. In turn, the proxy will send these commands to the board and listen for the responses it receives from the board. The proxy will then pass these messages back to the ASP.NET page.
The main issue I see occurring is that if a second user opens the web page and tries to open the COM port, there will be an error. Will this cause the first connection to fail? I guess I can first check if the port is already in use and give the second user a message. Are there any other potential challenges I am missing or not seeing?
I'm wondering if anyone has been getting a 'System Exception Violation: Attempting to write to protected memory' exception.I have 3 calendar controls on a form and when selecting dates on the 3rd one, I am getting this error when I select a 2nd date.
Ive been using both SQL Server CE and SQL Server Express. Both are pretty easy to program. What are the considerations for choosing one over the other ?

When using POS explorer, everytime I claim my receipt printer it takes a few seconds. My question is how can i claim the device at program startup then share the device between forms? Meaning I want to open, claim and enable during program startup then use the device on certain forms.
A Problem in accessing a device from VB Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42) This error is because i am using 2 devices of the same company which has the mass usb storage on it and when i install one of the device the other hides. So one is detected the Other is not. It also give a error called designed dragnonacally something...
Question: I have a mailserver written in C# and want to add a web-interface.Now the way I see it, there are two possibilities:
1) Somebody want's to integrate the mailserver on his own webpage/webapp --> needs WebService interface
2) Somebody wants to access the mailserver via a web-interface, e.g. on localhost for configuration, but maybe also for writing and reading email.
What's the best way to unify these 2 demands?I mean with 2), the mailserver basically needs his own webserver, listening on port 80 or n, where it displays a page that e.g. ideally uses the WebService to integrate the webserver funcionality into the integrated webserver-webpage.But said integrated webserver should not interfere with an ordinary webserver,if running on that machine. Also there is the problem of ports and firewalls on the client side and in corporate networks.
