.net - Clean Way To Display/hide A Bunch Of Buttons Based On A ComboBox Selection?
Apr 14, 2010I'm writing a standalone application in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2005. I want to display/hide a bunch of Buttons based on the selected value of a ComboBox. Each selection would have a different set of Buttons to display, and I'd like to have them arranged in a nice grid.
Driving a TabControl with the ComboBox value would be the kind of behavior I want, but I don't want it to look like a TabControl to the user because it might be confusing.Is there a way to do this?
Basically, I'd like Selection1 of the ComboBox to show Buttons 1-4, Selection2 to show Buttons 5-11, Selection3 to show (maybe) Buttons 1, 3, 5, 6, and 8, etc., have them arranged nicely, and have the GUI show only the ComboBox and the buttons.
Event Hook During Construction - Use Withevents If There Is No Benefit?
May 12, 2011I must say personally, the WithEvents system is, shall we say, open to extreme false sense of security, so to speak. I like a lot of automation in my code, and tend to provide ways to do things manually, with a "default" behavior encoded. However, as I have just discovered, the withevents doesn't HOOK the event delegate until after creation. So even when you do New MyObject(), if an event is triggered during the Sub New() process, the delegate hasn't been assigned yet, and thus the event (which in my current situation is extremely important) never triggers. which begs the question the point of the WithEvents other than removing "AddHandler" lines from procedural code. Sure it saves on typing, due to code completion, but if that's it, that isn't much of a benefit. One would think that using the WithEvents would allow me to do:

MyBase.New()
RaiseEvent MyEvent()
End Sub
Tragically, this does NOT work, which royally screws up my lazy loading techniques and other such tricks that were supposed to make my code simpler to use, and instead has made things 10 times more complex, as I have to specifically alter class initialization sequences to be outside of class instantiation. PS - Don't mark answers on other people's questions. There are such things as Vacations and Holidays which may reduce timely activity, and until the person asking the question can test your answer, it is not correct just because you think it is. There is a many to many relationship between [classes] and [students] through the third table [studentClasses]. I want to design the detailsView of [classes] such as that all [students] will be listed in a listbox but related students that take the class will be highlighted. And when I select/deselect students from the listbox and save I want the changes to be saved to respective tables.

I need to 'listen' to the data received and do certain things based on it, update labels, etc. When I started, I only had a couple cross-thread calls and I used JMC's example to get by that. Now my app is bigger and I am calling the ThreadProcSafe all the time. I am hoping there is an easier way so I don't have to create sub routines for every control. Clean Up Memory After Closing Window In Wpf?
Jun 16, 2009I've created an app, which puts windows onto the desktop. When i click on the window it creates a new window and passes the first window's Items collection to the second window's Items collection. Opening the second window adds around 2-4 megs of memory to the app's mem usage. Now if i close the second window, the memory still stays on the same level as when the window was opened. When closing the window, i reset the Items property and clear all images that i'm using in it. It has a wrappanel with some elements, that's also cleared using the .clear function of the wrappanel.children. What else should i do to free up the memory?

Jun 16, 2011I have a table in a Access Database that I'm loading into a VB.NET program and I want a way to get the name of each of the columns into a list of Strings. Googling has shown that this is much easier with a SQL database, but that doing so in Access is much more difficult. I came across this question Is there a query that will return all of the column names in a Microsoft Access table? Which gives a way to do it, but when I try the code it just populates my list with a bunch of "System.Collections.Generic.List'1[System.String]"
