XML Literals Parsing - XElement.Parse(variable Containing Text)
Sep 4, 2009
If I have a text stored in db, file, resource does not matter:
<code><%= Integer.MaxValue %></code>
Is there a way to do this: Dim el As XElement = XElement.Parse({variable containing text above}) and to have it evaluate the expression Integer.MaxValue?

I am trying to parse incoming data from a serial port that appears to be XML format but an exception is thrown when I switch from a simulated setup to the real deal.My program runs great in a simulated setup but when I try it out on the real device I get: XmlException was unhandled Unexpected end of file has occurred. The following elements are not closed: li840 line 1, position 9.The li840 tag is my root tag and the position never seems to get past 40. I've tried using a try catch block but in my in both my simulated and real setups my values are blank but the program will run without exceptions. Should I take my received data and put it into a file and then read from the file? or is there something else I can do to make this work properly? [code]

I'm working with a class that inherits the XElement class.The new class is called MXElement.It adds some new functionality to it for navigating through the XML tree, as well as some more information regarding attributes, but that's not particularly important.My problem is that I have an XML Tree filled with XElement objects.However, when I create a new MXElement object from the XElement object before, it is just a copy of that object. This means that any changes that I make to this object will not effect the original tree.I suppose what I'm asking for is a way to build in the functionality for my MXElement class and keep references to the original XElement objects.If possible, I would really prefer to keep MXElement a child class instead of building a lot of extension methods for XElement.

I am using XElement to manipulate my xml file: to find target node and then add child node to it. But now I have one problem. Let's say my xml file looks like this:
<Report xmlns="MY_NAMESPACE"
<Width>100</Width>
<Height>100</Height>
[Code].....
The second <ReportItem> is the newly-added one, but sadly this is not a valid file (my parser is complaining in the further processing of xml file). So how can I make this new item look exactly like the existing one, without any namespace? This has been driving me crazy. I spent a whole day to figure out that I need to add the curly brackets so that it will find the target node (it doesn't work like what the link above says that it adds and searches the default NS automatically), but now it adds something unnecessary?

I would like to add a XElement into an existing XElement as a child
Dim myDocument As New XDocument
myDocument.Declaration = New XDeclaration("1.0", "utf-8", "no")
myDocument.Add(New XComment("XComment"))
[Code]....
What is the best way? There will be at least one rule but there could be as many as 4 total.

I'm trying figure out if this is possible. Basically, I need to create an XElement and then add one or more siblings to that XElement, but without a parent. I'll add that list of XElements to a Parent later, but need some flexibility in building this and other lists of XElements before doing so. Is this possible?
So I would have something like:
Public items As XElement = <ItemA>Something</ItemA>
And then I need to add an element so that the result looks like:
<ItemA>Something</ItemA>
<ItemB>Something Else</ItemB>
That result is what I need to pass around as a single object. I've messed arounnd with IEnumerable(Of XElement), but there is no .Add.

I'm building XML based on some data pulled from a database, and thought to try building the XML with LINQ2XML. The data is coming from a few different places, so I've been building the XML by sections, based on what I have populated in DataTable objects. Using the XElements and XAttributes, I can get one or the other, but I was wondering if anyone had insight in how to make the determination of whether to use XElement or XAttribute at the point where the XML is being built.[code]So it's in that LINQ query that I need to determine if ValueToParse, for example, has a valid value (non-empty). If it does, then I can add the node and it's value. If it DOES NOT, I need to add that named node, but with an attribute of 'xsi:nil="true"',The caveats are that that there are some descendants which repeat over different parents (for example, there's an AddressDetails section which contains AddressDetail elements. These AddressDetail elements can contain 0 or 1 Contacts groups of Contact elements, so adding a node to the Contacts node isn't a straightforward option as it would be if there was only ONE Contacts element).I don't usually USE LINQ, but it SEEMED like a good idea at the time XD

I'm using a Microsoft Word form template to create objects in a form programatically, so depending on the information read by the program from the template.
So, I've got some fields where I store formula data for the form, in which I specify that the value for that field is obtained by multiplying other fields in the template. So I store in the string something like this:
"Text1.Text * Text2.Text"
So I need to convert these string values into variable calls to actually operate these values.

Part of my project is to retrieve a string variable from an external source (google docs) and parse it. This string represents width and height. I have no problem retrieving, I just need to parse it in to two strings. The string has 4 variations.
Here are examples:
3"x4"
3"hx4"w
3hx4w
3x4
The width is always the first number and the height is always the second. Sometimes, the width and height have decimal points. Any way to parse this into two strings of the numeric values only?

in vb, you can use text which is in textbox instead of numerical expressions. I mean, if I write 50 in textbox1 and also I can write like that code:
Dim result As Double = TextBox1.Text + 0.4
as you see, I didnt convert any type but it works in vb.net
But I want to learn what are disadvantages of this using?
(I am just talking about arithmetic operations)

I am attempting to parse multiple lines of text from a text file using regexpressions. I am using vb.net with visual studio 2008. At the moment I am filling my datatable with the text file information and am able to return each line of text and parse the first set of numbers that I am attempting to break up. I have multiple string with varying lengths of character lengths and numeric lengths however the delimiters are sometimes different. Sometimes will be whitespace and sometimes will be whitespace and chars. But is always 2 spaces. Here is my code:

I have a rich text box full of encrypted data split by ";" and I have
Dim Pass, Data, Game1, Game2, Key1, Key2 As String
Dim PassEnd, Game1End, Game2End, Key1End, Key2End As Integer
Data = showencrypt.Text
PassEnd = InStr(showencrypt.Text, ";")
[code]....
Pass gets decrypted ok, and Game1 gets decrypted ok. Key1,Game2,Key2 are all the same as Game1 though. Is there something I am missing? Why is it setting all of them the same? I've tried settings the Start of the InStr's at the previous End but it doesn't work.

I'm toying with an idea that would require me to parse a text file that contains a SQL statement. (i.e. Select * From Customers) I would like to be able to programmatically via Visual Basic identify key words, table names, comment lines, etc.So, how do compilers handle such a task? How does a SQL database handle such a task? All of the parsing tools are for CSV files with some sort of consistent delimiter. I'm wondering if I need to read the file one character at a time and then do some sort of comparison.

I'm a PHP/MySQL/HTML guy, but in the course of my work, I sometimes have to delve into Gatesland.I am working in VS2005 developing reports, and occasionally I have to write some custom code. This code is in (I believe) VB.NET. I avoid this as much as possible. It is my belief that if you have to use custom code in a report, you're doing something wrong with the DB, or with your query.Now, my boss (for reasons unknown) is storing data in the database as HTML. This data is historical, having a month and a dollar amount, and comes in a form like this:[code]I know this breaks even 1NF. I did not design the database. I simply must suffer under it's schema. See, the developer did this so that he could just read in a field, and dump it straight out to an echo/print statement when forming up the HTML. Unfortunately for me (the report developer), HTML shows up as verbose text if I dump it out as a field in a text field in a VS2005. So, I need to strip out he HTML tags, and replace them with appropriate values.
I am first trying to strip out the <th> data, and print it out with appropriate line feeds and carriage returns. This is the code I am trying to use:[code]Now, far from doing what I intend it to do, it simply returns the jubilent result "#Error". Wonderful. I'm sure the client will be happy.There must be some simple syntax errors or something going on there, but I am nowhere near an expert with VB.NET. I've used VBA extensively, but last time I used it was about 3 years ago. I'm hoping I can cash in some of that positive rep I've got, and get some much needed help in the dark wilderness of Microsoftia

I'm trying to parse a text file. First I plan on extrcating each line, then extracting each field by searching for a tasb.When I use InStr to search for a (return for end of line) or (for tab) I always get a zero. But if I put in a visable letter such as a I got a 5.also I tried /r, /n and all return a zero.The file looks as follows:
ID Name
1 Patient
2 Bed
3 PatientSet
