XML/XSD Primer - Interface Some Data To A Government Entity For Reporting

Jan 20, 2011

I haven't dealt with XML, XSD or SOAP prior to today. I have a requirement to interface some data to a government entity for reporting. My question is, is there a video, set of videos, or book that will help me to get up to speed on how to send information, using SOAP and XML to an out-side entity?

Indicate That An Entity Framework Object Is Implementing An Interface?

Feb 1, 2011

I have to begin saying that I'm working with Visual Basic. The problem is that I have a Entity Framework object and I want to indicate that this object implements a interface, for example:

Public Interface ICatalog
Property created_at() As Date
Property id() As Long
End Interface

Those properties are allready in the object. In c# I've done this just by declaring a partial class of the object and indicates that implements that interface, but in basic is not working, I supouse that is because of the language sintaxis used to declare that a property is implementing some property of the interface, for example:Public Property created_at() As Date Implements ICatalog.created_at

DB/Reporting :: Wrap Entity Framework-generated Classes?

Nov 19, 2008

I'm using a 3rd party tool to generate my model including code classes for the MS Entity framework. What I wanna do is etablish a real layer application. I'm speaking of the layers:

Presentation
Business
Data

If I'm not wrong the generated classes represent the data layer. My question is if I should wrap this classes up for my business layer or not. In some way these generated classes already represents the logic of my application as it was derived from my database. But is this enough?

I definitely wanna use LINQ as well which works pretty good with the generated classes alone.

I'm looking forward to any comments.BTW: It's going to be a ASP.NET web application. I have used the projetc type "class library" for the data layer. The web application will use this DLL.

DB/Reporting :: Crystal Reports & Entity Framework 4 With Nullable Types

Jul 6, 2011

I have written an application which manages some bookings, and want to use Crystal Reports to provide the reporting engine. I have used it before with datasets with no problems.

I am using EF4, and have a LINQ query and report datasource assignment as below:

Code:

Dim ActiveCustomers = From Customer In FMEntities.Customers
Where Customer.Status = 1
Select Customer

[Code].....

I have read up that I may need to convert the incoming data, but I am confused as to what it needs to be converted to. Should it be a datatable?

Why Can't A Government Employee Be A Microsoft Community Contributor

Jul 14, 2011

On Tuesday, 28th June 2011, I received an email from Nestor Portillo, Director Community and Online Support, Microsoft informing me that I have been awarded the Microsoft Community Contributor (MCC) Award for 2011. It was a cheering news for me in more ways than one. I am a Chartered Accountant (or CPA) with no formal training in IT. I am a government employee in Nigeria where most people are barely IT literate. I am into programming out of personnal interest and because I see a great potential for future benefits in that field.

But my joy was cut short because as I followed the steps towards printing my Certificate and redeeming my token, I was informed that government employees are not eligible for MCC award! For once, I regretted the honesty of admitting that I'm a government employee in the radiobutton provided for that. I find it too hard to understand why I am being denied this award just because I'm a government employee. If being a government employee does not disqualify one from participating in this forum, why should it disqualify one from benefitting from the token recognition of being here and sharing ideas and knowledge with others? Shouldn't Microsoft be encouraging government employees to take part in this forum knowing that public servants are the least interested in IT? For those of us in Africa, shouldn't my recognition serve as an incentive for others in government to show interest in IT? Or is Microsoft not interested in IT education and development of government employees especially in Africa?

I forwarded a protest letter to Portillo on the 30th of June 2011 but have not received any reply two weeks later. I am using this medium to appeal to Microsoft to kindly reconsider the exclussion of government employees from its awards. I am not in any way involed with any activity that may create conflict of interest if that is the issue. I am also appealling to other forum members to join this debate with a view to reversing this patently discriminatory and obnoxious rule.

Other users get a web-like interface. What dll, ocx, or other item controls this? I would like to get all my users on the same type interface.

VS 2008 Any Primer For Formatting Output In Console App

Mar 18, 2012

I would like to have my output in columns, and the numbers in two digit after the decimal.

I am writing a data validation app where the app asks the user for input like give me a number of double type: and hopefully the user will comply.

But the app will test some validation rules and then:

1) if the user simply pressed enter the app will tell the user all sorts of reasons why the input was rejected. And that part should look like a table with columns for the entry, if it passed true, otherwise false and then the reason line empty input. Or this number is a string.

.NET Sample Entity Framework 4.2 Code First Entity Splitting?

Entity Splitting: one class, two or more tables.Here is how it is done in C#, but I need to get it working in vb.net.One more thing: the class name and table columns do not match, so I have to be able to map that out, too.I have to get this to work this way because the place I'm working at right now is a vb.net only shop and the database schema is fubar, but they have so much (millions) of lines of code done directly against the database in both asp classic, vb.net, AND asp.net webforms that changing the schema right now is not realistically possible.

protected override void OnModelCreating(DbModelBuilder modelBuilder)

modelBuilder.Entity<Post>()

Entity Data Framework 101

I am used to using datasets for my projects in terms of data access. I now set myself an easy app to work on in order to learn the entity data framework and how to retrieve & manipulate data.Can anyone guide me through on where to start, what are the advantages of this model, In what scenarios should I choose to use entity framework and what are the things (basis) I should now before starting.My datasets are working fine too. Are there any reasons for me not to stick with that way of accessing data? Or is this something to consider depending on the users of the website (for speed purposes etc.)

Asp.net - Using ExecuteQuery() With Entity Framework, Entity Class

Jan 16, 2011

I am trying to jump from ASP Classic to asp.net. I have followed tutorials to get Entity Framework and LINQ to connect to my test database, but I am having difficulties figuring out ExecuteQuery(). I believe the problem is that I need an "entity class" for my database, but I can't figure out how to do it. Here is my simple code:

Dim db as New TestModel.TestEntity
Dim results AS IEnumerable(OF ???) = db.ExecuteQuery(Of ???)("Select * from Table1")

From the microsoft example site, they use an entity class called Customers, but I don't understand what that means.

Entity Framework Returning Different Data Then DB Query?

Jan 4, 2011

I have a view on some data in my database it returns the data as I would expect, for example

Call Date To From Phone Number
20/1/2010 00:00 23:59 08923233223
20/1/2010 00:00 23:59 08923233245

However when I have added this to my Entity Model and query it I get duplicate(and unexpected) data appearing

Call Date To From Phone Number
20/1/2010 00:00 23:59 08923233223
20/1/2010 00:00 23:59 08923233223

I am simply binding a Entity Data Source to this Entity but I am left scratching my head as to why the data is being returned differently

EDIT: Interestingly this can't be the result of some strange under the hood join as the row counts match as expected. I have also put together a query myself to test with the same odd results.From o In App.Entities.v_PersonalRules Where o.companyid = CompanyID Select o. I am using Visual Studio 2010, .NET 4

EDIT: The front end code is fairly simple

<asp:EntityDataSource ID="EDS_Personal" runat="server" ConnectionString="name=Entities_NEW"
DefaultContainerName="Entities_NEW" EnableDelete="True" EnableInsert="False"
EnableUpdate="True" EntitySetName="v_PersonalRules" EntityTypeFilter="v_PersonalRules" >[code]....

WCF Window - Entity Framework Data Compression

Feb 3, 2012

I have a WCF Windows service that provides data to 250+ PDAs via compressed datasets and was looking to redevelop both the service and the mobile application to use Entity Framework 4.x models. In order to keep performance acceptable when sending/receiving data on the PDA I need to keep the data size as small as possible and was wondering if its possible to compress a IEnumerable from the WCF windows service? From previous experience with the datasets I got a 80%+/- compression rate and even decompressing the data on the PDA achieved an overal 50% performance importment so retaining similar levels of performance is critical. Could I use a binary serializer and then compress the stream?

C# - Entity Framework/LINQ To SQL Data Binding Use Reflection?

Apr 20, 2009

I'm taking a peek at both the Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL, and while I like the systems (and of course the LINQ integration) I'm a little skeptical on the data-binding aspect. I've taken query results and inspected them, and they don't appear to implement the standard .NET list-binding interfaces (IBindingList, and more importantly ITypedList), leading me to believe that binding them to a grid (or anything else) is going to use reflection to get/set my entity properties. This seems like a comparatively expensive operation, especially when all of the code is generated anyway and could implement the interfaces. Is reflection used to get/set the value of the properties?

Edit: I'm actually concentrating on whether or not ITypedList is implemented somewhere along the way, as that's what has the capability to provide an explicit mechanism for defining and interacting with properties without resorting to reflection. While I didn't have a LINQ to SQL project up,I did inspect a simple Entity Framework entity query result, and it did not appear to implement ITypedList.

Edit 2: After accepting Marc's answer, I thought it might be helpful for others if I posted some simple code I used to seamlessly implement his solution. I put the following in the static constructor for my class:

public static ContextName()
{
foreach(Type type in System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()[code]....

While this is for LINQ to SQL, I'm sure an equivalent version could be written for the Entity Framework. This will scan the assembly for any types with the Table attribute and add a custom provider for each of them.

Entity Data Model And Insert With Identity Property

May 6, 2010

in a new project I thought I would try to integrate the new Entity Model Framework, but am having some issues/problems and would like to know if there is a solution or workaround that will let me insert a record into a table that has an identity property.At first I thougth it might simply recofnize the storedprocs that I have for insert/update/delte actions, and was a bit discapointed when generating the model ignored all my stored procs. So I thought wll heck maybe it just generates a nice insert method for me. Lets see.So I referenced my model and found that for the table (entity) there was an insert action (method) that had been generated, however what i found is that it explicitly added the primarly key field - which was based on an identity property and will not accept an explicit insert value.So I guess 2 questions

1. How do we work with identity properties

2. How can we take advantage of the performance and securtiy advantages that stored procs offer with SQL server?

Entity Framework - Query Data In A Navigation Property Table?

Where p.companyId = m_CompanyID _
Select p

m_handsets = DirectCast(m_handsets, ObjectQuery(Of RL.TelephoneNumbers)).Include("tblCalls")

where m_handsets is defined as Private m_handsets As IQueryable(Of RL.tblTelephoneNumbers)

which works as expected however what I want to do know is query the Navigation property (tblCalls) so I can do something like the following From p In m_handsets.tblCalls Where m_handsets.tblCalls.price > 100

I think the complexity comes here because in this instance I could have 5 tblTelephoneNumbers in m_handsets and then x amount of calls for that particular telephone number. I am interested in the tblCalls for each but I would like to filter them all for each tblTelehoneNumber.

Entity Diagram which (hopefully) should illustrate further So I currently know all the handsets that are associated with the company I am interested in. I can also see the calls loaded as a navigation property in debug mode, but I want to say is take this filter (in this example price>100 and apply it to all handsets->calls

DB/Reporting :: Updating Client Data Tables When Data Table On Shared Drive Is Updated?

Sep 28, 2009

I would like to know the best, or standard, way to accomplish real-time client updates in a small multi-user application using an access data table as a data source.Specifically, this application will be used by 3-4 people. It uses a datatable which is filled on form load and bound to a datagrid at design time. The datatable is stored on a shared drive. The data table on the shared drive is updated in two ways:

1) Users can update the datagrid which then updates the datatable on the shared drive via the data adapter's Update method.

2) A server application does some work on some text files, periodically updating the data table.

I need the clients to reflect the changes to the data table on the shared drive as closely to real-time as possible. I know that the data table stored in memory on the client is disconnected from the data table on the shared drive, so I must query again to get the updates.

1) Is there an alternvative model I can use which is connected, and which will automatically reflect the updates in the data table on the shared drive?

2) If not, what is the best way to check for changes in the data table (so I can know when to call the data adapter fill method)? I am planning to poll the drive for a change to the .mdb file, raise an event and then fill the data adapter when the event is triggered. I am using this method successfully now to check for changes to a text file in another application, and I know how to implement it?
