C# - Excel Interop Quitting The Excel Application Instance Makes Tests Fail?
Feb 23, 2011
I want to encapsulate the use of Excel Interop to make it easier to use somehow in a reuseable library.So far, I have written some tests that work good altogether, except that between each test, I force Excel to quite so that it does have handle on the test file no more in order to be able to delete.Once I quit the application instance between after each of my tests, Excel seems to be no longer responding, causing Windows to display "Excel has stopped working and is looking for a solution"
message. This message lasts a few seconds, meanwhile Excel is closing, causing the hang on the file to occur and my tests to throw an exception like "Cannot access file because it is being used by another process..."

I am using visual studio to create an application that opens an excel file and then for each entry in the first column the entry in the second column is stored in an array. Then excel opens two other workbooks and for each entry in the first column it searches for a match in these other two workbooks and stores the corresponding value in an array.
Anyway, the problem is closing excel afterwards. I have used the thread: [URL] to work through the basics of cleaning up. I used the cleanup code provided and added the WithEvents caveat. I do not have strict option on.
I believe the problem is the fact that I have three workbooks open.
This is my cleanup code: (wrkbk, wrkbk2, wrkbk3 are the workbooks; datasheet, datasheet2, datasheet 3 are the worksheets; excel is the application)
Code:
GC.Collect()
GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers()
GC.Collect()
[Code]....
I got the impression that order was important in the cleanup procedure so I have tried some variations of moving the workbooks and worksheets around.

I have been doing a lot of reading on this topic and most folks seem to agree that having Excel is required to use the COM Interop libraries. However they are never specific as to where that should be installed. Does it need to be installed on the machine I am developing on or does it need to be on every machine that I deploy to?
Edit: I should mention that this is desktop development/deployment targeted for all Windows machines.

I'm using a background worker to in an Excel VSTO application to throw up a progress dialog box with a status bar and a cancel button to escape from long running calculations. It's working really well, except for one issue. I'd like to use a Modal Dialog, so that the UI behind the dialog gets locked up, instead of a Modeless Dialog. If I use .ShowDialog() instead of .Show(), everything is great until you hit the Cancel button on the form. Following things in the debugger, the cancellation happens, it just takes somewhere in range of 30 seconds. If I use .Show() on my form, then the cancellation occurs immediately as it should.

I'm using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel in VB.Net in order to export an .xls file as a .pdf file. This was the only method I could find without relying on third party software to be installed on the running machine or using an expensive add-on to Visual Studio. This method requires opening excel and saving a file through the code.
My problem is that I only have a trial version of Microsoft office as I never actually use it. Well the limitation of times I can open it is up as I have run the program enough times for debugging purposes and now I can't continue development on this application. Is there a development kit for visual studio that provides the API I need for this functionality without actually having Office installed? I don't need Microsoft Office so I don't want to have to buy a full version just to develop and test an application.
I've looked at some options like this, but there is very specific formatting that needs to remain intact in the .xls for the conversion to .pdf that doesn't seem to work if I use an intermediary format. I've also read a little bit about the openOffice API, but is that compatible with .Net? If so, can someone point me to a tutorial that explains how to use the API with .Net? Specifically VB if possible, but I can work with C# code.

I have an application the contains several excel files bundled with it. I'm not opening the files and processing them within my application. These files contain a data-connection to reload all of the pivot-tables within each excel file. I have a 'link' on my form, that when clicked, it determines which file to open and calls a sub using filename and executing Process.Start(filename) for any excel file I want to open. I have no problems opening any one of the files and then exiting excel.
The problem is when I 'close' a file, but don't exit Excel; then try to open another file(clicking link on form)... it creates a new instance of Excel.
I know from experimenting that the fileopendialog form will 'reuse' an existing Excel instance, IF it does not already have a file open.
How can I do the same thing without using the fileopendialog?
I don't want the end-user to have access to the folders where these files live. That's why I have multiple 'links' on my form, one for each xls that already exists. I just want them to be able to click on a link and the xls file opens AND if they choose to merely 'close' a file and not exit... Don't create a new instance of Excel, but re-use the existing one.

Anyone have code to set margins(top,left,right,bottom) using excel interop and vb.net. I think it must be part of the worksheet object but maybe the workbook object. Having a tough time finding an example.

I am writing a class project application that is loadable from within AutoCAD. This application generates an Excel workbook with extracted data. I am having a problem with Excel closing when finished. It seems the Excel instance hangs until my application is unloaded. I have found the section of code that seems to be causing to hang, but I'm not sure why its hanging to prevent it.
Below is a copy of my code for the class (top to bottom with exception of the FileExistValidation method... too many characters ). The code section that is commented out seems to be what is causing it to hang. If I uncomment that, Excel hangs, with it commented out, Excel closes out in the background.[code]...

I have a project which opens a simple Excel file and populates it. It was working fine until this morning, when it has suddenly started giving me the error above: 'Application' is ambiguous in the namespace 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel'.I haven't changed any project references, or anything within the file itself. The references include Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel. The imports statement is there: importsMicrosoft.Office.InteropThe object declaration is also complete: Dim xl AsMicrosoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application which is the line that's giving me the error!

I have an executable built with VB2005 which is used to launch a password protected excel workbook, and the exe is used to hide the password then run some macros to setup menu commands and protect the workbook so that it can't be altered by the users.
The exe was built by registering the 11.0 version of Microsoft.Office.Interp.Excel in the project, and builds successfully. I can launch the spreadsheet sucessfully on my own desktop using Office 2003 and have tested everything on another 2 other independent desktops using Office 2003 however when I make it available for wider use, I have received a lot of feedback that excel will simply not launch when the exe is run. I had a look at one of the desktops where Excel wouldn't run and there were no associated entries in the Windows Event Viewer that I could see.
It seems that there are no problems running the exe using Office 2007.
My development machine was recently re-imaged with Office 2007 and I re-installed Office 2003, and re-registered the Excel PIA to allow it to work with Excel 2003. NOt sure if this could be hangover of having originally built the exe with Office 2007 then reverting of '2003.
Apologies if this is fairly basic stuff but I'm at a bit of a loss what to look for to identify why the exe will sucessfully launch Excel on some PCs but not others using the same operating system and version of Excel.

I am converting several VBA projects to Windows form applications. The only problem I have is that some of the functionality of Excel is essential to the application, such as R1C1 formulas. I do not want to instantiate the Excel application or access saved worksheets. All of the data is retrieved by querying Oracle databases. 2-Dimensional arrays are not an option because the columns contain differing datatypes, and DataGridViews are too slow to work with.
I thought simply dimming a Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet object would be enough, but the program kept failing and upon inspecting the object's elements in debug mode, I found that every value says this:
{"Unable to cast COM object of type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.WorksheetClass' to interface type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Worksheet'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{000208D8-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE))."}

Why I've choosen this forum (VB.Net) instead of Reporting is this seems not a matter of reporting. When I load the report normally, it works fine. When I export the report to Excel, it works fine again. After that when I tried to open the report again, it gives the error : "Load Report Failed" . I've to restart my application for make it work fine again.I'm using a Crystal Report Viewer control to load the report.

I'm kinda new to using VB.NET and certainly with the Excel Interop.I have the impression that I'm doing something wrong in these simple procedures. I keep getting errors on them:
[Code]...
The first procedure fills a combobox with all the worksheet names of the workbook.The second procedure copies all cells in the selected worksheet to an array.The error is the following: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.I think the error is in the cleanup part, when I set the objects to nothing and close everything. Can someone confirm if this is good or wrong code and maybe point me in the right direction?

I Programe a COM Library in VS2008 to use in Excel , but I'm stuck with an error that I don't understand.
I use this two classes , that compile and register OK. One Class QBitems return a nongeneric collection of QBItem but when I tried to use the Add and/or Remove Method, I receive the following error in Excel VBA :
Run-time Error '438': Object doesn't support this property or method.
I added a class (SImpleClass) in the library and I called from VBA it returned the QItems collection without problem.
NEW: When I replace the QBItem object with a string in the Collection QBItems everytthing works OK. It looks like interface doesn't like to pass an object like QBitem class
Excel/VBA:

The Current Setup:So, I can use the following code to save a file as an XLS:
_myWorkbook.SaveAs("FileName.xls", Excel.XlFileFormat.xlWorkbookNormal)
I can also use the following code to save a file as an XLSX (Since I use Office 2010):
_myWorkbook.SaveAs("FileName.xlsx", Excel.XlFileFormat.xlWorkbookDefault)
I have tried (unsuccessfully) to save the file as an XLSX using the following code:
_myWorkbook.SaveAs("FileName.xlsx", Excel.XlFileFormat.xlExcel12)Why does this not work? Last I checked, Excel 12 was Excel 2007 (a version that supports XLSX). Am I missing something?
I get a This extension can not be used with the selected file type error)

I am developing a fairly comprehensive Excel add-in, applying a lot of ops. Take a workbook, save under new name, apply actions (add names, change formulae, etc). Generally it works fine, but from time to time .Net throws an InvalidCastException on virtually any of my CTypes. When I acknowledge the error and run the code again (without quitting Excel) on the exact same Excel workbook, no error occurs. The InvalidCastException occurs maybe in 40% of all tries, otherwise the add-in succeeds.
