Is there a way you can do this ? I would like to have a collection class of T that would be able to do addition, substraction on the T type. I would like to keep T generic instead of having couple collections with the same code, but different types. How would you constrain the generic T?
Example: I would like to define a Collection(of T as IDoMaths). I wouldn't like to create my own integer etc classes with named methods to do the operations, because I think it would be slower. This part of the code is actually called very often and tends to be the bottleneck in performance.

I am working on a general helper class to sort ListView SubItems. I wrote a base class that has much of the code I need. It includes a MustOverride for the Compare method so that the various inherited classes can implment their own comparisons based upon their type. In VB6, we were using structures in many places. As a part of introducing object oriented programming,
1. is it a good idea of changing all Structures to Classes? or Is there a concept of "Generic Structure" similar to Generic collections, Generic classes?
2. Can some one guide me any source containing guide lines or best practices for applications that are migrated to VB.NET from VB6 and implementing object oriented programmaing.

I accept that you can't do this, but I'd like to be able to preserve the semantics of what I'm. trying to do, which is to have an untyped version that deals with Object, but a typed version in derived classes that knows about the specific type T.

The compiler does not allow a "T" in the method's parameter because it's not defined, but I'm not sure how or where to define it. I thought it was okay to have a generic method definition.

After researching remoting in .NET on MSDN, Microsoft considers remoting legacy for .NET framework 4.0 and recommends using WCF instead. My question is: can we implement WCF functionality into our VB.NET application or do we need to rewrite the app from the ground up in WCF?
View 1 RepliesAt the moment we're are considering writing a number of .Net web services to export/import data between sites. There are various different types of data involved, relating to multiple database tables. I could write various web services to receive the data being sent, for example

ImportSomeRecord3(field1, field2, field3, field4, field5)
and so on...
There could be about 40 of these services, and it's also possible that the fields may change i.e. new fields may be added. The client would be a VB6 application that would call the remote web service, and let that web service update the remote database. The web services will be written in VB.Net 2008.
Would it be advisable to replace all these web services with a single generic service e.g. ImportRecords(recordtype, blobofdata). I think this can be done in theory by just passing an XML string as the blob of data and letting the web service unravel this depending on the record type, but is there actually any advantage to this, and is it good practice to do so? I've read somewhere that passing XML chunks in this way, as a single parameter, isn't recommended, and I can see this also seems to be somewhat contrary to standard web service usage in that in effect I'm bypassing the web service definition.
In VB.NET when i define a subroutine (or function) , while declaring arguments , a list comes out. Having values ByVal,ByRef,Of,Optional, and ParamArray. Of these five lists , four are better understood except "Of". I searched and found that "Of" is used for Generics .Generic Class or Generic Method.

I am implementing a tracing mechanism myself. Now what I'd like to know is what is the best way to implement this mechanism(I mean, the architecture).[code]But then I saw there is an TraceListener class that let's me implement Write and WriteLine methods. The big drawback is that both those methods allow only strings as arguments, and I'd want to be able to send a lot more info than strings. What should I do?
