Check If Windows Is Shutting Down On Mybase.closing?
Jul 12, 2011
It all works fine it looks like this:Now thats enough for me but as many other users we have a problem of lack of knowledge when it comes to this:Windows is shutting down, the confirmation box appears and stops the windows from shutting down...This is unnaceptable imho and im trying to find a easy way to detect if windows is shuting down, or in other words if its NOT.So i put a: if windows isnot Shutting down then'all the other code in mybase.closingEnd ifIs such thing doable? all ive found was pages and pages of codes (something to do with api) and some outdated vb6 code...

If allowMouseCoordinate = False Then Exit Sub
Dim xPos As Integer
Dim yPos As Integer
If e.Button = MouseButtons.Left Then
[Code]...
But this only works if I press on form. But I have a tile based map covering the entire screen.How can I make it so, that It would check if I clicked on a picture box (or simply anything)?

I am using WM_QUERYENDSESSION to detect Windows shutting down in my vb.net app, but the complexity is that I need to quickly load a console application during this code to do some cleanup. It is looking like the console
application is not even loading, even though I can cause delays in the vb.net code. Is there a way to do this?

I was in correspondence with someone using my program and he verified that on his system, XP won't shutdown/restart either if my program is running.
Basically what happens is when XP gets to my program in the shutdown process to terminate it, the whole shutdown/restart just stops. I have to exit my program, then start the shutdown again.
The person sent me an image of some threads that were still running after the shutdown process halted and I was curious if anyone might be able to shed some light on this info and what to do about these threads.
These are the threads that are running and what they do: mscoree.dll - a module containing the .NET Framework functions. mscorwks.dll - Microsoft .NET Runtime Common Language Runtime gdiplus.dll - contains libraries for the GDI graphics interface.

I've build a vb.net windows service which does nothing but ping a wcf webservice and handles sending a maintenance request to this same webservice at night time. It does both tasks using a timer event. If the service does nothing but these two things it says at startup that it's shutting down cause of being idle. The windows service thread needs something todo.[code]....

What I wanted to do is close all opened workbooks. This code does the work IF there is at least one or more opened workbooks. My problem is IF there is NO opened workbook at all; It goes around unendlessly in the WHILE Loop. How do I not process the closing IF there is no any opened workbook at all? (NOTE: I found this code from somewhere else.)

I'm trying to give the user a chance to cancel FormClosing of MDI Parent by throwing a "Are you sure?" msgbox with an e.cancel however when FormClosing is invoked by MDI Parent, all MDI Children close first, before the msgbox appears.
I was wondering if there's an easier way to prevent MDI Children from closing rather than having to e.cancel every child form's FormClosing until I get a positive response to close and then push all the close events on the children because that seems like too much of a hassle if you have a lot of MDI Children.
EDIT: I guess the only solution I can find is adding If e.CloseReason = CloseReason.MdiFormClosing Then e.Cancel = True to the FormClosing event and using ApplicationExit instead.

This is my problem.I have a field set up in MS Access to Boolean YES/NO, this field is populated when the user check a checkbox on a windows form. If the user check a checkbox, the value is written as checked in the data field (MS Access).The problem is when I search for the user information, I need the information from the Data base to populate(return) to the windows form. Example: If I enter a users phone number and the user data is present, the form gets populated with the information the user previously entered which was store in the database.Example: If the user selected checkbox1 and submits the form. When I search for the user info, the check box should check(populate) because the user had checked it on submit.Here is what I have done:
[code]...
I am getting the check value correctly in the database using a Boolean.Here is one of the errors I am getting. Unable to cast object of type
'System.Boolean' to type 'System.Windows.Forms.CheckBox.I am having trouble putting the codes in a code tag or block

I have an MDI form as the app start object.I don't think is related, but in the Form closing event, I check for some condition, and if it's true, I ask for confirmation before closing:
Private Sub FormBackground_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosing
If (e.CloseReason = CloseReason.UserClosing) Then[code].....
So long, everything works fine in my development machine, which runs windows XP.However, when deploying the application in a windows 7 machine, the message box works correctly, showing itself whenever it should, but after the form is closed the application keeps running in the background. This happens whether the form closes directly or asks the user first.I have fixed it putting an End instruction in the FormBackground.FormClosed event, but it doesn't feel good.

VB Windows form Application.. I am developing an application of which part of the program is around configuration settings allowing the user to enter configuration items. When the menubar item for configuration menu is clicked on the main form the menu opens.This is fine but the mainform should not become active again until the configuration menu has closed. This does not happen right now and the mainform simply comes to the foreground and the configuration form goes to the background... I realize that coding an event on the Child form to handle this would not work because the child window loses control and the main form gains control.. I thought of coding a function as follows on the main form but it does not seem logical because i would have to add to it for everyform and do checking to make sure the child is actually open before trying to close it..
Private Sub Form1_GotFocus(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.GotFocus
MailSettingsWindow.Close()
RentalSettingsWindow.Close()
[code]....
I did away with the above sub routine and used the below code as per the recomendation of using showdialog which works just as i was looking for.
Private Sub MailingAndEmailSettingsToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MailingAndEmailSettingsToolStripMenuItem.Click
Dim MailConfig As New MailSettingsWindow()
MailSettingsWindow.Showdialog()
End Sub

I have a class that inherits from a base class (this contains a lot of common db related stuff amongst other things and is marked as MustInherit). I want to write a shared method in which I call a base class method, however the compiler gives me the message 'MyBase is only valid within an instance method'. This shared method is a logging method and will be used a lot within the app, I'm trying to avoid having to instantiate an object each time I want to call it.
Is it possible to access the base class methods from a shared method?

how do we access MyBase from an extension method?
i'm trying to extend a Sub called PassDown that would call the form's Base's OnPaint method
<Runtime.CompilerServices.Extension()> Public Sub PassDown(ByVal form_instance As Windows.Forms.Form, ByVal e As EventArgs)
MyBase.OnPaint(e)
but of course, mybase couldn't be accessed this way so is there an alternative?

Is there any ways to hide/shadow MyBase's properties?
Such as MyBase.Location, MyBase.Font?
When I try to declare a local "Height" properly, VS prompts me warning to use "Overloads" instead. But when in form designer/control test run, I still see this property, or any other properties (BorderStyle) which I tried to hide.

I have a program with the line process.start("shutdown", "-s -f -t 00") However, when it's executed, everything exits, and the logging off text appears, then the screen blackens out and there's only the mouse pointer. Nothing can be done like opening the task manager, I just have to shut it down using the main button, holding it for 7 sec.

I may be the only person still automating excel this way and I am looking at doing it in ways that better handle COM objects and such, but for now I just importMicrosoft.Office.Interop.Excel and go for it. Something that gave me a lot of grief at first was hanging excel.exe processes, but there are tons of resources online for fixing that. At this point I am pretty confident in my abilities to handle it.One thing I did notice and was wondering about is how does closing a windows forms application interact with excel.exe running in the background and likely more specifically the garbage collector. I have written quite a few excel automation projects and noticed that after I run my program .exe and it has completed there is an excel.exe process that hangs on until I close the pop up window from the windows forms application. Why is that happening?

I have written an application that sits in the systray and monitors a database for me. The problem is that this application is stopping some of my clients computers from shutting down, I assume because the app is still running when the computer is trying to shut down.
What I need to know is if there is a way that my application can tell when the computer is shutting down, so that I can close my application and therefore allow the computer to shut down.
I am only running my app on Windows O/S e.g. 2000, XP The application is written in VS 2005, .NET 2 and VB.Net language
