View 4 RepliesOk, so I have a string called item. It's value is "Coffe`". When I try to get the number of caractors by using:
textcount = item.length
However it returns with the value "5". even though there is 6 caracters.
I would like to know how to count specific characters for a proper split value so I can seperate the name of the file from the rest of this address:
C:\Program Files\Folder\Folder\File.file
The reason is so I can combine it with other addresses taken in my code to cuase a proper copy command using the File.Copy with import IO The character I am trying to count is: \ This is so when I command the split, I can choose the split number (starts at 0) so if there are 4 of the "\" characters, then I would subtract one from this number, and use it as the Split index so I can capture the split data at: File.file
How can I Count the Characters in a DataTabel Field before that Field is DataBound to any TextBox. I thought of using a Variabel, something like this:
Dim Var As String = DataBindings.Add("text", HoofGeregteBindingSource, "Ing1")
If Var.Text.Length > 36 Then
. . . . . . . .
End If
I'am Sure I don't have to tell you guys, it does not work.
I have a little problem with my code.I want to browse a file,display the file,then i want to counting the letters from it.The counting letters i want to display in a textbox(in my code b1),but i don't know how.

I'm making a custom control suited for handling passwords. I have created a control that inherits from a text box and I have implemented a lot of things so far. But what i want to do now is create a system so that when a user types It will display his last character typed for a X amount of time.Is there a way to turn only selected characters into password characters and still be able to get the password text from the Text property ?
View 3 RepliesSo i am count after i find each string example when i find "ADT^A08" it counts how many found in the txt file and then it moves to the next file. My problem is that you can see totalA08 += 1 counts the amount. My problem is that it keeps its old value after each run so the first run counts 5000 and then the next count is 10000. When that last file was the same as the first only 5000. Any ideas on how to properly clear that value after its done [Code]
View 3 RepliesI have Access 2007 db in which users insert some data (name, last name etc.). This db is for some problems in my work and every of this records needs some solution. When we solve this problem we come back to this record and select YES in yes/no field of db.I want to count inserted records and show it on first form of my application like this (label or text field, it is not important) :
* all records : 124
* solved records : 50
* not solved records : 74
I know that the topic is kind of weird, but I will explain that here. I am reading text from a text box and inserting that into a listbox. I am wanting to read what the user inputs into the text box and add a character between each character they type. Here is what im wanting to do written out[code]...
View 4 RepliesI have a text file stored as a string variable. The text file is processed so that it only contains lowercase words and spaces. Now, say I have a static dictionary, which is just a list of specific words, and I want to count, from within the text file, the frequency of each word in the dictionary. For example:
Text file:
i love love vb development although i m a total newbie
Dictionary:
love, development, fire, stone
The output I'd like to see is something like the following, listing both the dictionary word and its count. If it makes coding simpler, it can also only list the dictionary word that appeared in the text.
WORD, COUNT
love, 2
development, 1
fire, 0
stone, 0
Using a regex (eg "w+") I can get all the word matches, but I have no clue how to get the counts that are also in the dictionary, so I'm stuck. Efficiency is crucial here since the dictionary is quite large (~100,000 words) and the text files are not small either (~200kb each).
I am using visual basic 2008 and trying to create an application to plot data from text files. I have several data files of various sizes. They have an unknown number of rows and either 2 or 4 columns.I need to put the data into 2 dimensional array, so value(,) becomes either value(lines,3) or value(lines,1) depending on the number of columns.My program needs to be able to count how many columns there are, and redim value(,) appropriately.I have written a piece of code to count the number of lines (rows) in the file using 'While not (EOF(1)) ....' but I'm stuck on how to count the number of columns.I could ask the user to indicate how many columns there are before the file is read, but I would prefer the program to detect the number automatically.

View 6 RepliesFor example I only the second character in each line to be an x, while the 3nd to 10th character must be a hex digit.At the moment I use a Select Case, then check the position of the caret (using textbox.selectionstart) and see if the key being pressed is a "legal" character.Is there a better way of doing this as it slows down on large amounts of text.
This is the code I have at the moment:
Select Case TextBox1.SelectionStart
Case TextBox1.GetFirstCharIndexOfCurrentLine + 1

Possibly a simple question, but I want to be able to "do nothing" if a value in a text box is less then 3 characters[code]...

I have a series of text boxes on my form, and my client wants me to filter out characters that aren't allowed, for example in the name field you cannot have symbols or numbers.
Now, he wants it so when you try and put in a special character it simply will not get entered into the text box. I know the logistics to this, but I'm not sure how I would go about coding it.
Basically what needs to happen is when the user types in characters like $, ^, 5, * etc, a function needs to recognise this and stop them from being entered into the textbox, whether it means deleting them as soon as they go in or interrupting the action altogether.
I can not find the proper way to verify characters only in a text box.I am having a hell of a time trying to understand all that.I have 3 errors in my code.One error is "Error-Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference."the other two errors are in reference to an explicit conversion from string to double.strName is what I am using as my variable for the input of the name in txtName.text Below is my full code. "----" are used to separate the classes.Attached documents are in .PDF format and HAVE TO BE FOLLOWED to the letter.Pages 2 & 3 contains the UML diagram as well as how the project should look and the structure chart for the code. I am not truly sure if my DisplayReservation is what will work to use in the list box.Is there any other reference I could get to help me understand how to use a list box as the project requires.[code]
