Feb 1, 2012I am trying to create an msi install for my windows service. The reason for creating an msi is that the intended users want to be able to quickly install the service with as-little intervention as possible.
i can get the service to install as a msi but i have a variable within my code that i need the user to define when the msi is being installed. the variable i require from the user is the file path which they want the xml files my service creates to be located.
i thought i could configure the app.config application settings to contain the file path that the xml files should be written to. However i'm struggling to do this and im not to sure if its the best way to do it?
I have my setup project that contains my executable and has my textbox which will contain the one variable from the user.I have an installer class which contains my serviceinstaller and process installer. This is where im struggling to understand what i need to do next. Do i need to override the install method? The current code of my installer class was automatically generated and is as follows:

Dec 4, 2009how to create a global variable for this situation: I would like to store who logs in to a system (like, who is currently logged in, when he logged in) and then use that info for a transaction form, which will look like this: which admin made the transaction).
If I were to use a global variable, it would mean having to pass it onto several forms right (eg: from login form to the forms that will use the log information). I'm also thinking of just having a config file that will store the said login info that will be changed everytime a user logs in.

Jun 21, 2010I need to holds the common settings for all of the apps ona server (UNC path). Previously I used an ini file on the server and the application was told to look there via a command switch.
I understand that I'm trying to use .net in an old fashioned way by not packaging it for web update & delivery but that's a contraint of the architecture I need to work with.
Is there any way to force my application to use the application.exe.config file from a set location rather than the user data area that .net automatically writes it to? Even if not on a server path, then in the application directory where we can push update it?

How To Create New Instance Of Web Service / Config
Sep 2, 2010So I get thrown an exception right when I try to create a new instance of my Web Service that says:
"Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'KBBVehicleService.IVehicleInformationService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element."
This is a web service that will connect to Kelley Blue Book. I know I need a new endpoint entry in my Web.Config, but what does this look like? The one I added looks like this:
<endpoint address="http://localhost:3300/KBB.svc" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="BasicHttpBinding_Default" contract="Services.Client.IVehicleInformationService"/>
But it doesn't work. Still throws the same exception at the same place.
Create Button That Opens Form To Read / Edit App.config
Oct 28, 2011I am trying to build a form that has a button on it that will open up a 2nd form that allows me to view and edit the connection string. I believe the connection string is also called app.config, and can see that in the Solution Explorer for the project.All I have managed to do is drag a button onto my main form and relabel it. Jan 3, 2010I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?
Make Application 'single File' And Get Rid Of XML Config File?
Dec 29, 2010I have this pretty simple application, it uses a webService to transfer data to my servers DataBase. Now it is very important for me to keep this application as one single file, and not having some XML files needed for it to work, but this is the case. I think the XML file holds the information to this webService, so without it the application crashes. Is there a way to get the application to work without this XML file, or a way to put the XML inside the exe archive?

Dec 6, 2011I have existing file named myapp.exe.config . What I would like to do is have a little app where user could specify path to app database. I know how to get file path but I dont know how to change existing line in myapp.exe.config file. No changes during runtime. Just simple app to change string in app.config file. I would like to enable user to select path to database and store that path in app.config file. Line which I would to change has a string "|DataDirectory|mydatabase.accdb" and i would like to change it with for ex. "C:Myappmydatabase.accdb" ( if it is selected file's path).

I've edited the app.config on multiple occasions without creating a new app.config file. However, I just created a new application and I can't find the app.config file.I hit Show All files and it still doesn't show. I know I've seen the answer somewhere before, but I can't remember where.
