I am making a game in VB.NET and I need to know how to get the closest PictureBox to my Player(Which is also a picturebox) I have tried a couple of time but it seems to get exceptions or get itself rather then the closest.
I've managed to implement a formula that helps me to get the closest tile's distance that meets my requirements. The only thing is, I can't retrieve the actual tile for some reason... Tiles are named "Items" also. Here is my code:
[code]...
It puts green squiggly lines under ClosestItem and gives me the error: "Warning 2 Variable 'ClosestItem' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime."
Hey I am making a GDI++ game in vb.net. Now what I want is the monster(picturebox) to go after the player(picturebox). There Are No Vertical Walls. Only The Edge of map barriers. For example to get to the player the AI would have to go to the end of the ledge and either jump off and fall to the lower ledge or take the ladder down. There is no jumping, only falling and going up and down ladders and across the horizontal ledges. So How Can I make this pathfinding system?
Say I have an array of doubles sorted from smallest to largest. What is the FASTEST way to find the closest value in the array that is LARGER/SMALLER than the search value if an identical value is not found.
Code: dim myArray() as double = {1.245, 2.45, 3, 4.556, 5.4434} 'LARGER AND SMALLER SEARCH for 3 should obviously return 3 because its in the array. 'LARGER SEARCH for 2.46 should return 3 because it is the closest LARGER value 'SMALLER SEARCH for 2.46 should return 2.45 because it is the closest SMALLER value
I certainly can do this on my own, but I am looking for the fastest way.
I have a scenario at work where we have several different tables of data in a format similar to the following:
Table Name: HingeArms Hght Part #1 Part #2 33 S-HG-088-00 S-HG-089-00 41 S-HG-084-00 S-HG-085-00
[code]....
Where the first column (and possibly more) contains numeric data sorted ascending and represents a range to determine the proper record of data to get (e.g. height <= 33 then Part 1 = S-HG-088-00, height <= 41 then Part 1 = S-HG-084-00, etc.)
I need to lookup and select the nearest match given a specified value. For example, given a height = 34.25, I need to get second record in the set above:
41 S-HG-084-00 S-HG-085-00
These tables are currently stored in a VB.NET Hashtable "cache" of data loaded from a CSV file, where the key for the Hashtable is a composite of the table name and one or more columns from the table that represent the "key" for the record. For example, for the above table, the Hashtable Add for the first record would be:
ht.Add("HingeArms,33","S-HG-088-00,S-HG-089-00")
This seems less than optimal and I have some flexibility to change the structure if necessary (the cache contains data from other tables where direct lookup is possible... these "range" tables just got dumped in because it was "easy"). I was looking for a "Next" method on a Hashtable/Dictionary to give me the closest matching record in the range, but that's obviously not available on the stock classes in VB.NET. what I'm looking for with a Hashtable or in a different structure? It needs to be performant as the lookup will get called often in different sections of code.
I have a list box full of X, Y positions in the format of "xxx, yyy". I need to compare my current position to the positions in the list box and find the one that is closest.
I am creating an application and I have the numbers 1 - 20. Each number represents a location. They are continuous. I need a way to find the closest number to a given location. For example if the event is in location 8 and there are 2 people who can attend who are in locations 6 and 10. Then zone 6 would be chosen as its closest and also the lowest. If I needed the next highest closest number then I could pull all of the numbers into an array and sort them and then pull out the one which is the next highest zone. However as I need to find the closest number which could be lower, im not sure how to achieve this.
I need a way to compare multiple strings to a test string and return the string that closely resembles it:
TEST STRING: THE BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER THE RED COW CHOICE A : THE RED COW JUMPED OVER THE GREEN CHICKEN CHOICE B : THE RED COW JUMPED OVER THE RED COW CHOICE C : THE RED FOX JUMPED OVER THE BROWN COW
(If I did this correctly) The closest string to the "TEST STRING" should be "CHOICE C". What is the easiest way to do this?
I plan on implementing this into multiple languages including VB.net, Lua, and JavaScript. At this point, pseudo code is acceptable.
Imagine a grid of 16x16. All points are integers, there will be no partial points.I have a list of points that fall somewhere on that grid. Since each point is has an integer x,y coordinate, there can be a maximum of 256 points, but normally there will be considerably less than that. What I am trying to do is take a new point N and find the closest point to it in my list of points. The brute force approach is to use the Pythagorean theorem to find the absolute distance from each point on the list to N, and the minimum of all those distances would give me the closest point. However, since there could easily be 100 points, or so, and there is a real advantage to speed in this case, I am looking for a faster way to do this.
The first thing I thought of would be to divide the grid into four quadrants of 8x8. I could then quickly determine which quadrant N was in, and I was able to pre-compute which quadrant each of the points on the list was in. Therefore, I could easily narrow the search down to the points in the same quadrant as N, but that is invalid. If N lies near the boundary of a quadrant, the closest point might not actually be in the same quadrant as N.So what I am looking for is a way to search a list of X,Y points to quickly find the point closest to some other point N. The fact that the search area is 16x16 might help. A certain amount of pre-computation can be done on the points in the list if it helps, but N can fall anywhere in the grid.
I am looping through a list of DateTime variables and have got the .ToUniversalTime variable. I want to find out from the list which is the closest one approaching Now.ToUniversalTime but am having difficulty trying to work it out I had it looping through like this but this isn't much good as I only want to return the one that is the closest approaching to the system time. If TodaysCard(i).eventDate.ToUniversalTime < Now.ToUniversalTime
Public Class EasyPlayer Private Sub EasyPlayer_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("MediaPlayer") End Sub
So I am trying to make a program that allows you to move two shapes using two KeyPress events, one to move the first object and another for the second. It works, but it can only move one of the two objects, not both at the same time.
I'm making a speed card game [URL] for the final in one of my programming classes. I'm looking for a little assistance with how to go about getting it done the best way. I've included the code I have so far below. How does it look? What would you do differently? Would you do anything the way I did? I need to have one AI player and a human player.
So there's this accounting package at my client that spits out text-based reports with invalid dates, like February 31st or September 31st.The reports are formatted with spaces and mono-spaced fonts. The data that gets parsed out are fed into a more formal local SSRS report, and that's about all you need to know.
What I am interested in fixing is the situation where a date is invalid and can't be converted into a DateTime struct. The date format from the report is "MMM-dd-yy" (e.g. "Feb-30-10"). The date strings need to be fixed before being shown in the formal report. I've seen this done two ways in my time as a developer, and I want to come up with a cleverer way of doing it (if there isn't a built-in way I don't know about). The first bad method (I can't believe I'm even showing you!):
Dim month As Integer = <Parse out the month from the bad date string> Dim day As Integer = <Parse out the day from the bad date string> Dim year As Integer = <Parse out the year from the bad date string> Dim validDate As DateTime
In Visual Basic I have a Dictionary which holds a Date as a key and a custom class as value (I will use a String in the example). I keep track of a list where a date is saved with a value. For example, lets say I have a dictionary with the following values:
Dim dict As Dictionary(Of Date, String) dict.Add(DateTime.Now, "test one") // Suppose the time of this date is 12:03:10 dict.Add(DateTime.Now, "test two") // Suppose the time of this date is 13:07:20
[Code]....
Assuming that the list could be very big, is there a way/what would be the best way to find the key I am looking for?
I also have a function that returns ALL tiles on the map and they're X, Y position. How could I find out which one is closest to the position I specify? I can't figure out how to go about it. how to implement it with this. Heres a MADE UP example if what I'm trying to do:
Dim MyPosition as New Position() MyPosition.X = 400 MyPosition.Y = 400 Dim tList as New List(Of Tile) = MyMap.GetTiles
Now, I can already do the stuff above, but what I need to make is something like this:
When I right click on the component area, a contextmenu appears.I want to disable this OR remove "Settings" and "About Adobe Flash Player..".I searched the internet for a solution, but almost all the suggestions were about the Visual Basic 6. Anyone knows how to correct this in Visual basic 2008 ? (And sorry for my English if there is a mistake )
when adding picture to dynamic picturebox from my.resources in .dll a duplicate semi functional picturebox is added too, behind the picturebox i intended to add. has anyone seen this happening before or can provide any insight into this?
In VB6 I used some pattern of programming..I passed the picturebox as parameter to some procedure in some class and inside this procedure paint all needed graphics using this class methods. Now I want upgrade my application to vb.netBut all samples for line drawing show me how to draw inside paint event.[code]
I have a PaintEventHandler connected to a picturebox via AddHandler.
In PaintEventHandler I have coded this for writing the drawing to PictureBox1.Image:
Dim PictureBox1 As PictureBox = CType(sender, PictureBox) PictureBox1.Image = New Bitmap(PictureBox1.Width, PictureBox1.Height) Dim bmp As Image = PictureBox1.Image Dim g As Graphics = Graphics.FromImage(bmp)
... drawing something ...
PictureBox1.Image = bmp
Everything works fine but after running through the paint event handler and showing the picture on the screen it calls the painthandler again and again. It does not stop.
Replacing the code above with
Dim g As Graphics = e.Graphics
Makes it running. But then I cant save the Image to a file.
I have a program I'm working on that, for one of the features, allows the user to drag an image from a picturebox, into the main form space, anywhere they want. [code]...
When trying to drag the image from the CurrentTilePicBox, the very moment I move the mouse while dragging the cursor becomes a circle with a cross and won't drag and drop into the new picturebox.
I have a panel, which contaisn two Pictures. When the panel is mousehover the Pictures appears. When the panel is mouseleave the Pictures disappears. However, when I'm trying to pass the mouse between the Picturebox and Panel, the Picturebox disappears, because the panel doesn't detect that as panel area.
Private Sub Panel_MouseHover(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Panel.MouseHover Me.NextIMG.Visible = True Me.PrevIMG.Visible = True End Sub
Private Sub Panel_MouseLeave(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Panel.MouseLeave Me.NextIMG.Visible = False Me.PrevIMG.Visible = False
My app has scrolling images in the background and a picturebox on top. The image in the picturebox has transparent parts. How can It so that the transparent parts show whatever is belo the picture box, not the form background? I have tried taking screenshots and positioning them as background but this just freezes the app.
Dim ScreenSize As Size = New Size(154, 83) Dim screenGrab As New Bitmap(154, 83) Dim blank As New Bitmap(100, 300)
I need to plot some analog values read from the serial port.I plot them in a picturebox starting from left. When I reach the end of the control at the right side I shift all values to the left of a point and I plot the new point at the right, (I have some flickering but it could be acceptable). This is my plotting control. My problem is that I have to clear the control (picturebox) in order to plot the shifted graph, but the method Clear of the Graphics class clears everything inside the picturebox, even my grid. How can i make always visible a grid "in" my picturebox?
1.a transparent image with a grid over the PB? (the clear method cannot remove it)
2.an image with a grid below the picturebox that must be with a transparent background to make visible the grid?
Ok, so I have a new challenge for the D.I.C. Heads. I'm making a simple little game using VB controls. I know it's not the best idea in the world but it'll have to do for now!
Here is whats happening. I've created a class that inherits the PictureBox control that I want to use to place my game pieces on the playing field.
Dim pbArmyUnit(0) As ArmyUnit ' ArmyUnit is a Class that inherits Picturebox now I create the playing pieces at runtime as needed and append them to the array. Player currently buys the units and places them on the playing field.
[Code]...
On a side note how can I look at a stack of pictureboxes all created at runtime to determine whats at a particular location? Example. I move my army unit over top of the picturebox that shows my forest. How can I tell what picturebox I just moved on top of? does that make sense? I don't need code for this just directions on looking at the right info so I can figure it out.
I am creating my terrain at runtime as well since it's randomly generated. and I'm basically making an array of 192 pictureboxes with the appropriate terrain image as well as some other modifiers. Just like with my armies above I've inherited picturebox and created a terrain class array, this way I'm able to add my movement modifiers etc, directly to the picturebox I place on the screen. It's these pieces of terrain that I want to be able to check before allowing the unit to move into them! to get movement costs etc.
