Getting Recommendation For VB Development Computer?
Jan 12, 2010
I currently develop VB programs on a Dell Dimension 9150 with XP Pro SP3 that I bought in 2006.I use my computer to develop VB 3.0 to VS 2010 programs. I also use Microsoft Office 2007, Expression Studio 4.0 and other email and internet searching and reading.I'm not a game player or music player. I mainly do just development and other utilities to aid in my programming efforts.
I am going to buy another computer and I was wondering what others would recommend as far as how much memory and hard drive space
and which processor to get. I would also like a recommendation as to which operating system to get, Windows 7 I'm sure, but which version?
i have two questions, and i don't know the best place to ask them. 1. Can anyone recommend a configuration for running Visual Studio 2008 and vb.net programming ? Is a quad core cpu better or a dual core enough ? Will things be much faster with an SSD hard drive or a 10k rpm regular drive will be enough 2. Does Visual Studio 2008 support multiple cores when compiling vb.net projects ? We have solutions with many projects and compilation is sometimes quite long.
I used a background with dark gray regions as transparent regions for my splash screenOn my development computer, it shows transparent regions, but on all other computers it's opaqueI even tried installing Windows XP in VMware on the development computer, and still it didn't work!
I am using VS .net 2003 and developing a program that calls Excel. The development computer only has Excel 2003, and the target machine only has Excel 2007. Would it be possible to install Excel 12 Object Library in the development computer without installing Excel 2007?
I need a recommendation for a data container. I am loading a sequence of letters (Latin characters) into a text string.I then want to pass the individual characters into a 2-D matrix-like container (i.e. populate left to right based on # column assumption).I then want to search for patterns within this matrix using rules similar to that of a crossword puzzle (Left to Right, Top to Down, Left to Right Diagonal). What is the best container to do the anlysis in?I am assuming the decision to this will be based on the search flexibility of the container. My initial goal is to use crossword puzzle rules as noted above. But I may want to expand this to search backward as well (ie. Right to Left).
Can anyone recommend a POS receipt printer that would integrate easily to a .NET WinForms application?Basically what I mean by integrate easily, is that the printer would actually show up as a standard windows printer, because the existing application uses Microsoft reporting services to print receipts, and I do not want to have to redo the entire receipt process via some SDK or API exposed by some proprietary receipt printer.Right now the client is printing on 8.5x11 sheets of paper from a standard printer, and it is just silly to use such big paper for receipts. We thought about getting half sized paper, since the current laser printer tray supports it, but found that non standard paper sizes run much more expensive than standard size paper, and it is not worth it.So I will tweak the report layout to fit a smaller size once I have a printer in place to use, so I am just looking for a recommendation if anyone has worked with any specific POS receipt printers.
I am looking for a serial port component for .NET that overcomes the issues with the built-in Serial Port component related to sudden unplugging of USB-to-RS232 adapters, and suspension of the computer while the port is open. (Untrappable errors occurring after the the device is unplugged or the computer comes back after being suspended.)I have been using Richard Grier's solution, but I still have problems when resuming from suspend. Is there a 3rd party component that you would recommend? I have tried several, and each have their shortcomings. Ideally I'd like a drop-in replacement for the standard serial port, but I'll take whatever I can get.
Edit: It turns out that upgrading to .NET 4 and using the serial class works fine on XP, but does not work on Windows 7.
I'm looking for an actual implementation of StackForm recommendation. It can be a framework, API or any light-weight, Compact Framework-compatible library. It's not too complex to implement that idea, and I did in the past a couple of times, but I'm friend of not re-inventing wheels and maybe someone or group did an open sourced project implenting a generic navigation manager in order to create Compact Framework Forms application using this approach or any other similar to it.
I'm looking for an advanced level VB.NET book which covers LINQ and Lambda Expressions.Generally I read C# .NET books due to lack of good VB.NET books when it comes to generic .NET Framework related subjects. However Lambda and LINQ is quite different in C# and VB.NET I'm looking for an advanced level VB.NET book on this subjec

i have a task to create a TCP Server (a program that is listening on its network card interfaces for incoming data stream).I have search on the internet and i found that i can use two methods : Socket or TCPListener class.I have created an example for Socket class, but i wondering how could i test it? I need to check that if another computer in the network send some string data to the listener computer , then this message should be displayed. Here is the example from microsoft that i am using for TCP Server using Socket:
Public Shared Sub Main() ' Data buffer for incoming data. Dim data = nothingc[code]....
But it does not work because of the PORT setting. If in the TCP Server i have "Dim localEndPoint As New IPEndPoint(ipAddress, 0)" the client crashes, but if i change the port from any (0) to 11000 for example, the client works fine.Do you know why?
Later edit2:Maybe i should have started with this question:Which method is recommended for my scope?asynchronous or synchronous method ?
I am developing a computer application designed to monitor the network and CPU statistics on a computer remotely. The monitored computer would have my program installed and the monitoring computer would display, in a form, the information being sent from the remote client. The application does not send any information regarding packets, user names, passwords, etc. It is solely meant for monitoring CPU performance and Network resources remotely.
What would be the best method to send this information over to my host machine?I am programing in Visual Studio 2008 on windows XP. The client machine is also XP. I know this sounds a little shady, but it is required for my little business (http://www.iquorum.net) to monitor what and when something happens on our machines when I and my employees are away.
i have encountered a problem, i want to access the data coming to the computer from the in-built bluetooth module of a computer on windows platform, this data has been sent by a remote bluetooth module say a by an autonomous device (just like a bluetooth mouse connecting to the computer). The to be sent is in the form of numbers and i need these to manipulate on the computer.
I have a desktop computer with a cable connection on the back that allows me to watch TV on the computer using Windows Media Center. I had the idea of writing a program that would access this feed and send it to another computer (laptop) via my network. That way I would be able to watch TV from anywhere that my network spans. I have no idea if this is possible or how I would even do it,
So I have three questions. 1: Is it possible? 2: How would I go about access the feed? 3: How would I send it over the network?
My original thought was doing it in Flash, but I'm not very good at Flash so I wanted to do it in VB.Net.
I need to copy a file from a local computer to a remote computer on the network, if i try to use File.Copy without logon i get the following error:"Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."How do I provide user name and password for file copy?
Problem:When my computer restarts my mapped drive appears under My Computer. When I try to use it from code I get errors. If I open the mapped drive by double clicking it, and then try the code, it works. What I discovered is that when my computer starts the status, using net use, is
I have to create an online application which i can apply it on every employee's computer in my company and i have create the application on visual basic 2008 and SQL 2005 using windows application and database. The problem is i do not understand how am i going to run the application on every employee's conputer. Because i have create the application on my computer, must i install SQL on every employee's computer? or any other software i have to used.
How do you share files from one computer to another that are connected in one wireless internet connection? I mean, it's possible using shared folders this means it could be possible in vb.net too..
I have exe file that lunch a program takes 5 inputs. this exe locates in computer B and I need to execute it from computer A using VB.net customized application that pass the inputs through it.
I tried to get os version of remote computer using ip address with WMI ,It shows "RPC server unavailable" error. If anybody have solution for getting remote system information without WMI in vbnet,
I want to find the computer which are connected with my computer via lan connection using vb.net code. actually a have a mini project in network connection setting.
This would be easier if I were able to have the external computer get its own name and just pass it to a web service as a variable, but I'm not able to do that right now. There are a variable number of computers from several different entities that regurarly access a web service on one of our servers. Changing only some VB.Net code on the server and nothing at all on any of those external computers, how would I be able to get their names programmatically in VB.Net?
We have an VB.NET VS 2005 application that goes out and connects to remote computers on the network to gather information about the running services, processes, etc.
However, not all of the computers and servers are Windows boxes, and this is causing us some grief.
Is there a way in VB .NET to determine if a computer is running a Windows OS before trying to make a connection to it?
