I've managed to produce a simple project in vb 2010 express and to publish it onto a cd. I can install the project from the cd and run it successfully on my windows 7 machine where I developed it but trying to install it onto a windows xp machine produces the message:

When I used the Published program to Install it in my same computer it got installed in "StartMenu".
I didn't get the option to select the Drive for Installing it like what we get when installing other program.
how to make that option to appear on installing the program?
Next question.Does VB 2010 express support the my.computer etc. syntax? If so what do I have to do to use it? It appears to offer a pretty easy way to use FTP.

View 5 RepliesWhen I try to install the application from the files it produces when I follow the prompts from Build - > Publish (Visual Studio 2010) onto another computer, and then run the application on the other computer, it wont connect to the SQL database on the original computer. I've been receiving a timeout error or one which says it can't find the server.I have no idea where to start looking to fix this, both computers are running XP and 4.0 .NET Framework. The computers are linked on the same network.I think my connection string is the culprit, but I don't know how it should be set up to run on multiple computers. And i have my controls in a panel but it still gets them chopped off by the screen. the part highlighted in yellow is the bit that gets missed off, what can i do here as i still want the search to be on the right. How can i make the controls fit in the screen even on a smaller screen.

I have created a db in sql server 2008. I am now trying to connect to it from vb 2010 express project. When I try to add the data source, I get the error "You don't have permission to open this file". I have change the Auto Close option to True on the db.
After further testing I found if I opened BV as Administator I was able to add the db.
I am trying to make a movie center where I got all my movies on my computer on. Little hard to explain in english cause it's not my native language. Well I've got some problems. 1. I don't know how to make a browse button to work. In detail, I don't know how to code it so that it will select a whole map. Well I don't even know how to code it so it can browse.

View 4 RepliesI have an app developed with VB .NET as front end and SQL Server Express 2005 Database. Now I want to install it on a server so that other client PCs can access it. My gquestions are:
1. Do I have to install SQL Server Express on the Server before I can install my database on it?
2. Do I have to install Visual studio on the clients before I can install the front end?
3. Is there any online walk-through/tutorial on how to accomplish this (ie, installing a database app on a server and connecting the clients)?

If my understanding is correct, Win 2000 only supports .NET 2.0 Framework. I am using VB2008 Express to write an app that I would like to install but I believe VB2008 Express utilizes the .NET 3.5 Framework.
Is there a way to compile my app so that it only requires the .NET 2.0 Framework? Or, more directly, is there a way to install apps written with VB2008 Express onto PC's running Windows 2000?
I'm trying to add a folder and some files within it to a Visual Studio 2010 Express VB.NET project. I have read the answers to questions on this subject here and here. They both say "select folder, right click, and then select Add To Project". But when I right-click in this way, no "Add to Project" option appears. Does anyone know why this is so, and what I can do about it, or alternatively another way of adding a folder to a project?

I am using VS .net 2003 and developing a program that calls Excel. The development computer only has Excel 2003, and the target machine only has Excel 2007. Would it be possible to install Excel 12 Object Library in the development computer without installing Excel 2007?
View 4 RepliesIf I put this piece of code in a new fresh vb.net form, add a button and two labels and start debug I get execution time of about 11.5s.If I put the same piece of code in a new form in an old project upgraded from an earlier version of vb.net, start debug I get an execution time of 7.5s.So I do exactly the same in the two projects but get different execution times.
What do I have to do with the fresh new project to get the same execution time ?I am not interested in improving the code to be able to calculate primes faster. I just want to know what is the significant difference between an old upgraded project and a new fresh one. I am using windows 7 64bit on a 2,4 Ghz Intel quadcore.

I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.
