Database Logic - Differences Between Datasets And Datatables ?
Jan 12, 2009My understanding of databases (access and sql) is fairly limited, though i have got a couple of programs under my belt using access databases, not yet used SQL. I could however, work around to figure out a way to do what i'm trying. What i don't understand is the need for all of the components, so all i'm after is somebody who can take the time to fully explain these further to me, or point me in the direction of somewhere i can gather a full understanding.
My questions are, for now;
1. Why do we need to take a copy of the database, rather than dealing exactly with the database itself?
2. What differences are there between datasets and datatables, what is better for what and why?
3. What is the purpose of the data adapter?
SQL - Store Enums At Database Level Or In Application Logic?
Jan 19, 2010I have a table, lets call it Objects. It has a predefined set of records looking like this:
ObjectId ObjectName
1 Salmon
2 Trout
3 Seabass
4 Shark
Etc..
So, this I would like to implement somehow as an enum. But what's the best way, implement it in the database creating tables for it or in the application logic in an CommonEnums codebehind file etc?

May 10, 2011This is my problem.I have a field set up in MS Access to Boolean YES/NO, this field is populated when the user check a checkbox on a windows form. If the user check a checkbox, the value is written as checked in the data field (MS Access).The problem is when I search for the user information, I need the information from the Data base to populate(return) to the windows form. Example: If I enter a users phone number and the user data is present, the form gets populated with the information the user previously entered which was store in the database.Example: If the user selected checkbox1 and submits the form. If Network connection will be lose, i do not whant to get any error and after that lose data wich is in textbox, until sql database connection will not be. SQL Query - If/Then/Else Logic?
Oct 15, 2010I have 3 tables:Sales data - SaleID, Date, StoreID, CategoryID, Cost, Retail
Store names - StoreID, Name
Category names - CategoryID, Name
I have a dgv bound to my sales table, and 2 comboboxes, one each bound to the remaining tables, with display member set to the name, and value member to the ID.
An ID of -1 represents "All Stores" or "All Categories"
An ID > -1 represents a specific location or category
So, can I use some sort of If,Then,Else logic to do something like this:
SELECT (*) FROM Sales
WHERE (IF @StoreID > -1 THEN StoreID = @StoreID ELSE True)
AND (IF @CategoryID > -1 THEN CategoryID = @CategoryID ELSE True)
AND Date BETWEEN @Date1 AND @Date2
I've found some different examples of If/Then/Else and Select Case type logic for SQL using google, but they don't seem to fit my situation, and I'm not sure how to apply that to what I'm attempting here.

Aug 26, 2011Working in a VB.Net 3.5 WinForms application, and using Access 2003 (JET 4.0) as a database backend through ADO.Net.
I'd like to check the database for changes, before the application decides to refresh the data from the server. Are there any best practices for this, or should I trust the ADO.Net environment to optimise/handle this?
I was thinking of using a limited log on the server, which gets updated by every change. Pulling this log could tell whether or not a certain table has changed data.
