One Set A Maximum On Number Of Character A Textbox Can Use?

May 14, 2011

My issue is that some websites only allow say 15 characters maximum to be used to create a user name where other sites do not. Currently I have one text box on the screen and a button, and a web browser that navigates to two sites.Site #1 has a cap of 15 characters max to create a user nameSite #2 doesn't have any maximum amount of characters to use.I am wanting to know how I can enter lets say a 20 character username into the text box and have the code set a max of 15 characters for site one and nothing for site 2. I was thinking that this could be done when passing the information from the text box to the text box on the screen with something like

Textbox1.Text.value.length= maximum 15
Site #2:
Textbox1.Text

What is the maximum number of executions in a while loop in VB.net that it will allow? Meaning, it is checking for a variable to equal some value, but that value never comes? How many times will it execute the code before it quits? Is there some way to set the maximum number of executions without terminating it programmatically?

.net - Implement A List(Of) With A Maximum Number Of Items?

Nov 14, 2011

I'm trying to figure out a good way of implementing a List(Of) that holds a maximum number of records.

I have a List(Of Int32) - it's being populated every 2 seconds with a new Int32 item.

I want to store only the most current 2000 items.How can I make the list hold a maximum of 2000 items, then when the 2001'th item is attempted to be added, the List drops the 2000'th item (resulting in the current total being 1999).

Thing is, I need to make sure I'm dropping only the oldest item and adding a new item into the List.

Forms :: Maximum Row Number In Multiline Textbox

Apr 21, 2010

i am trying to put a maximum row number of lines in a multiline textbox. What i want is to achieve something like a console, with a maximum number of rows, with the top rows to dissappear and to keep always the last i.e. 500 rows. a note: for the textbox text i use the following algorithm

dim text
textbox.text = textbox.text & vbcrlf & text

the problem is that after a certain number of rows the program starts to get a little slow. So i guess if i put a limit to the rows i will fix this.

NumericUpDown Controls - Update Some Variables Each Time One Of These NumUD Controls Changes Value

Nov 20, 2011

I've got a couple of these NumericUpDown controls I put on a form. Without describing too much about the form I basically want to update some variables each time one of these NumUD controls changes value. So for each NumUD I have a call to a Recalculate subroutine within their "changedValue" event.

There are actually two problems. First, if I initialize the "Value" property to something other than zero in VB2010 at DESIGN TIME it won't even open the form when I hit RUN. It gives me a "No Source Available. No symbols loaded for any call stack frame" error. The error box says "InvalidOperationException" was not handled. So if I try to set the initial value of the Value property to anything but zero of either I get this error.

Manage A Large Number Of Similar Controls In A User Interface (such As Button Or TextBox Controls)

Aug 23, 2011

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.

But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.

Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.

[Code]...

So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. Using Variables In Controls?

Aug 31, 2009

I am trying to program a Yahtzee game. I would like to use a random number (out of a six sided die) and show the appropriate dice image based on the number generated. I have six predefined pictureboxes that each have a side of the dice image. I want to mimic the picturebox based on the number received.

For example:

x = Int(1+Rnd()*6)
die1.Image = diex.Image

Where x would be the random number and would pull from the appropriate picturebox.

Enumerating Controls With Variables?

Dim strFld As String
For intFor = 1 to 5

Me(strFld).Text = intFor
Next

It doesn't like the line of Me(strFld) but I figure there must be a way to reference a field via a variable instead of hardcoding the field name.

Dynamic Number Of Controls At Run Time

Aug 7, 2010

I am developing a form where I want the user to enter a complete recipe. In any recipe, I have no way to know how many different ingredients or how many steps will be involved. So if I am using a row consisting of a textbox, a combobox, and a textbox to represent 1 ingredient. how do I generate a dynamic number of these controls at run time? I have the same problem when I store the steps in creating the recipe. I need to create a dynamic number of textboxes to record each step.

Adding Arbitrary Number Of Controls In Loop At Runtime

Jul 12, 2009

How do you add an arbitrary number of controls to a form at run time? With indexed controls I could define the 'seed' control at design time and reference 'clones' of the 'seed' control at run time via the index. Now I must declare each additional instance of the control at run time then set each individual property that differs from the default for that control for each instance. Then I must add the newly declared control to the appropriate container controls collection. I'd like to do this in a loop but how can I get away from using a fixed control name in the declaration:

Dim controlname As New Control

I can't use a string that I can manipulate the contents of for controlname because it sees it as a double declaration. I can't use an array such as Control(index) for controlname. Dim Control(maxindex) As New Control doesn't work. Dim Control(maxindex) As Control works but any assignment based on this such as Control(indexvalue).Name = "ControlName" fails. It didn't address the issue of handling the declaration of new controls in a loop with some kind of variable name for the control.

Slow Form Load (has Large Number Of Controls)

Nov 9, 2010

I wrote last week about a problem with an MDI program that had a large number of forms (each with a large number of controls on it) that was "sluggish" in loading and in switching between the child forms.I've attached an example program in VS2008 (though the actual app is VB2010)Rather than show the hardware control application with all of the text fields, and picture boxes acting as indicators, I made a simple program to show the point. This is exaggerated as this just loads 2000 or so text boxes on a form. In the real app I have ~ 200 assorted controls per form of picture boxes, scroll bars, text boxes, labels etc. Also, there is a large full screen .jpeg as the back ground of each form. All are generated at run time and are placed on the form in the New call of each form. (as in the sample attached)main issue seems to be the methodology I use to switch between child forms. I make the current form .visible = false, and the next.visible = true. I have used this as it "keeps the place" on each page if the user has scrolled or is looking at one section of the form. When the next form .visible = true happens I see the controls added in a "machine gun" fashion instead of all at once.
