VS 2010 - Threading - Button To Stop Execution Of Code
Apr 22, 2011I am working on an app and I am a bit confused w/ threading. I understand the point of threading but I am not getting when to use a background worker thread vs. a standard thread vs. a thread pool. Can someone shed some light on when to use which? Right now, I am trying code an app that does stuff initially in a sequential order and then eventually must thread (otherwise it takes forever). The problem I am having w/ the sequential stuff (and threading later) is that I need a button to be able to stop execution of code. [Code]
I did the background worker on this first sequential operation because when I tried w/ out it, the text box didn't update at all until the web page contents were retrieved. Basically, the text box change of "Starting." doesn't show up until the web page is finished processing even though the assignment to the text box happens before that code.
Packet Capture And Threading, Capture Library Waits For "thread Stop"
Apr 5, 2009So I am hacking together an app which listens to traffic using SharpPcap library, it reconstructs the packets from sessions using the code from TpcRcon.
Listening and reconstructing part work on their own . What I want is on each packet arrival main window gets an event so it can display the packet , and when session is reconstructed display a complete packet (I am interested in HTTP ones) . -That is where it breaks with weird symptoms: for example right now it does not stop on invoking stop listening method - the sharppcap library function hangs there forever waiting on this line of code : m_pcapThreadEvent.WaitOne();//wait for the 'stopped' signal from thread
I also had it not working and crashing in sharppcap function because I had omitted one parameter in form delegate- which makes no sense, because form delegate does not deal with packet capture at all and only reacts on "New Packet" event from my "Listener" class (which is only there to notify main form)
My app starts as module main instancing class "Listener". MainForm has it
registered as friend with event and handles even "New Packet"

Stopping Multiple Timers - Stop Button To Stop Each Timer One At A Time
Feb 26, 2009Alright, so I'm still working on the slot machine. I have three timers all independently going for my three "wheels" of the slot machine.
My issue, is that I'm trying to make a Stop button to stop each timer one at a time, and I'm not understanding why this code isn't working. The logic completely makes sense, and the first "wheel" stops when I click the button, however, it doesnt appear to stop the other two timers.

VS 2010 : Use A Stop Button To Stop A Loop?
Dec 7, 2009I created a form and have the variable inputs for 4 motor run statements. Then with a start button the script starts and it is surrounded by a for next statement to loop 10 times. It works fine but if i need to stop the execution of the script with a stop button. I put the stop in a new section but of course does not work to do a motor stop. It just causes the exe to not respond till the loop is complete. Just need to be able to stop the Run1_Click button section.
Edit:I do not mind if it finishes the 4 motor run commands and then stops execution of the loop. So need to figure out a way to trigger a stop from a button on the form to stop the cycle. For the future the loop will be a variable integer input so 10 will not be the standard.
Edit::Does a ' Do ' statement sound like the thing to use? If so how and where would I place that? Have a Stop button on the form and it would stop after the 4th motor run command.

Getting SaveFileDialog Error

This code works on my local machine (Windows 7 Ultimate).When I tried it on WindowsXP,it didn't even open the dialog,instead it gave me an Unhandeled Exception error.
I can't remember the specific details of the error,but I do recall my profesor telling me there could be something wrong with permissions(me being the ONLY user on my machine,and his machine having multiple user accounts).
But what does all that have to do with opening the SaveFileDialog?
Could it be that SaveFileDialog1.AutoUpgradeEnabled = True is causing the problem?

Here's my code I've got so far - it incorporates the OpenFileDialog to open the file and the SaveFileDialog to save the file. When the code goes into the OpenFileDialog portion, it works great....the initial directory is set to "C:" This is where the user will select the file they want to save to another location.

May 25, 2010I have an .net 1.1 framework application I would like to update to 3.0 framework (or at least 2.0), but I've just run into a real problem. The savefile dialog code which works fine in 1.1 does not work in 2.0 and up. Line for line the code is the same (thereis no difference in line numbers at all). I'm baffled.With the exception of throwing an error for the Quicktime 7 control, VS2008 indicated no errors in converting 1.1I open my 1.1 (VS 2003) version and step through line-by-line. Saving Images Using SaveFileDialog?
Jul 1, 2011I am attempting to save a graph that I have displayed on the screen as an image file (e.g., a jpeg file) but the image I want to save has additional information such as axis labels that are not displayed on the screen. In addition, I also want to suppress some information that appears on the screen.
I create a separate bitmap canvas called mycanvas and I recreate my display on this canvas with the additional information. When I save it with an image format such as iftype=system.drawing.imaging.imageformat.tif with the command mycanvas.save(filename,iftype), I get the image file that I created on mycanvas. But If I use the SaveFileDialog followed by mycanvas.save(filename,iftype) I merely save the image displayed on the screen. It is as if my graphics object has reverted back to the graphics object I was using for the screen display.

Feb 27, 2011I was trying to export a data from the listview control into an excel format and I was able to make it successfully using a command button directly. I want to use a SaveFileDialog to export and save the content of the listview. I searched from MSDN website and got a sample code which was originally intended for saving an image file. I tried to used it and edit the code and combine my code to export the data content. It ran successfully and attempt to export the data in an excel format but when you open the file in the path as to where you save the data, it gives you a message "Excel cannot open the file 'Filename.xlsx' because the file format or extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file." and it just leaves an empty excel file. I read from the MSDN site that if you are using an MS Office 2007, the file extension for excel would be '.xlsx' and not 'xls'. Let me give you the two codes I tried to use. First, I used command button and was able to successfully export and save the content in an excel format but using the SaveFileDialog was not successful. I suspected that there's something wrong within this line 'oBook.SaveAs("saveFileDialog1.FileName.GetType()")' and 'Dim fs As System.IO.FileStream = CType _(saveFileDialog1.OpenFile(), System.IO.FileStream)'.
