I'm in the process of developing a construction estimating program with vb 2008. Most of the programming I'm able to work myself through, but the problem and question that I have is I would like to incorporate a part of the program where I can import pdf, jpegs, tiffs of blueprints and have the ability to then set the scale, take area and length calculations, and basically do quantity takeoffs.

I'm in the process of developing an application to keep track of employee's shifts. the top of the grid should display the days, the left side the employee name. The grid will display the type of shift (N for night, D for day) I just need some direction as to how to develop the calendar grid...I have a database with all the required information (I have a "Shifts" table, which contains the employee name, the date of shift, and the type of shift). Times are not relevant since employees will be either working a night or day shift (type of shift). I'm using VB9 for this project.

I contemplated various algorithms, then settled for a variant of Leibniz's series which would converge rapidly whilst being simple to implement.After about 30 minutes or so of programming I had finished my program which could generate the first 14 decimal places of π in a mere 27 iterations, below is the source code:

However, to my dismay, I soon discovered that this was all my program was capable of because of the IEEE specifications for numbers, although I've heard of people generating π to thousands of decimal places using unmodified Personal Computers so if you could tell me how I should modify my code to work around this to generate say 500 more decimal places.

View 2 RepliesI want to be able to read and write the process memory of Firefox for a game on facebook(It's kind of like cheating only you can't cheat, nothing stays permanent.) this is just for fun. The game is called happy fish aquarium and you raise fish in the game and it's just really addicting. I found a program that reads process memory and lets me change certain values in happy fish aquarium so I can make my fish tank look different or whatever. But if I reload the page it will of course go back to the original state because the fish tank's memory is held online. The point is, I just want to make a program that can read the process memory from Firefox from a certain range and bytes. like 4 bytes and a range of 00400000 to 7FFFFFFF. Does anyone know how I can achieve this? Please note, this is not for cheating purposes in any way whatsoever, it's simply for visual fun(visual meaning only I can see it). What I want to do is the same as using the add-on firebug in firefox to change the html on a webpage.

View 2 RepliesI am developing a program that populates a rich text box and from a click event on a listbox. The data that is being loaded into the rich text box is located in a richtextformat file located on the hard drive. I noticed that when I entered a URL into one of the richtextformat files that it appeared that I was able to click on the text as if it were a link. So I wondered if it was possiable to click on that URL and open a web browser from the loaded richtextformat file? I have read several articles in regards to opening hyperlinks in rich text boxes which can open a web browser with a given URL.
View 1 RepliesI am working on developing a livestock judging program for a 4-H project that will present you with a group of animals and you order the animals from best to worst by typing the placings in a text box (i.e. "1234").
When I type in the placings incorrectly, it comes up with the message box that it is supposed to, but when I type in the correct placings, it shows the message box that it is supposed to but then shows the message box that is supposed to show when you type in the placings incorrectly.

The code in question is in place, and it works. The project is all but wrapping up. That being said, I would love to find a better way to run this section of code in an x64 system so I have the solution ready for future projects. What I currently have in place is as follows:

Now I know the easy way to achieve my goal would be to use the timer object in Visual Studio. The problem I ran into is I was developing an automated command line program. As such there was nothing I could attach the timer to (that I'm aware of). I just needed to pause the program for a few seconds to allow the DTSX package (SSIS file if you're not familiar) to load the file before I remove it from the staging folder.
While I was doing research for this issue I came across the old Sleep() function (referenced to a library in kernel32 as I understand it...never used this before either). When I tried to use this on my current system (64-bit system) I received stack overflow errors. Additional research lead to something called wow64, but I did not have enough time to fully research what this is / how to use it.

I have a program that starts another program after setting the regkeys basically the program continually syncs the calandar of outlook and another application.I set the regkeys than launch the c:sync.exe app. I have tried a simple process.start and launching the process as a thread and they both do the same thing: The other process starts and works as it should but my main program goes "White screen" or "not responding" until the process.start has exited.
I want the process.start to run in the background so if users click in my main app it responds and truly that they can access the context menu of my main app from the taskbar while the process.start is running.
We are currently changing our Antivirus program which involves uninstalling our current one first. That isn't a problem but we have several laptop users not in the building who might have a problem uninstalling programs.
It should be possible to write a script/program to automate the uninstall process I guess, but don't know where to start. Can someone point me in the right direction?

It's working fine until i try to inherit a class that also has a constructor. vb asks for mybase.new but when i add that vb says that a constructor cannot call itself, when i try it in a different way vb asks the parameters of the constructor of the class that i want to inherit.
View 11 RepliesI've managed to make an application at home using a serialport emulator and connector that will read text from a file on my desktop send it to com1 and then my connector program will merge com1 with com2. In short my program works at home but when I connect it to my device it appears the data in DataReceived is a fraction of what my simulator setup at home is producing, which apparently is completely normal according to all these threads I've read here.

1. i created tables in sql server with fields, for strings - NVARCHAR, for integer INT, for datetime DATETIME,for numeric NUMERIC.
2. i created another setting-table to have all screens name,label names ( for labels and grid column headers ) and corresponding japanees display names and another column for english display text.
so i'm just going to fetch Japaness/english display names from setting-table on form load and change the labels.Are these correct ? or anyother way to do unicode application effectively ?
I must say personally, the WithEvents system is, shall we say, open to extreme false sense of security, so to speak. I like a lot of automation in my code, and tend to provide ways to do things manually, with a "default" behavior encoded. However, as I have just discovered, the withevents doesn't HOOK the event delegate until after creation. So even when you do New MyObject(), if an event is triggered during the Sub New() process, the delegate hasn't been assigned yet, and thus the event (which in my current situation is extremely important) never triggers. which begs the question the point of the WithEvents other than removing "AddHandler" lines from procedural code. Sure it saves on typing, due to code completion, but if that's it, that isn't much of a benefit. One would think that using the WithEvents would allow me to do:

RaiseEvent MyEvent()
End Sub
Tragically, this does NOT work, which royally screws up my lazy loading techniques and other such tricks that were supposed to make my code simpler to use, and instead has made things 10 times more complex, as I have to specifically alter class initialization sequences to be outside of class instantiation. PS - Don't mark answers on other people's questions. There are such things as Vacations and Holidays which may reduce timely activity, and until the person asking the question can test your answer, it is not correct just because you think it is. Marking it correct for them often stops other people from even reading the question and possibly providing the real "correct" answer.
laterly I've been trying to think of smarter ways to use code my programs. My Uni class's latest assignment involves a Lawn Mowing Caculator. I've designed a form below, but now I'm stumped for where to start on my code for it.
View 4 RepliesI work as an IT Administrator and manage a few Servers, Routers, VPN Connections over a number if locations. What I am wanting to do is create a vb.net app that will go out and ping say every 2-5mins each of the servers, routers, that are listed and then shows beside the Hostname a Green Circle which means online and if its a Red Circle its offline, and the screen refreshes if their is a problem or a device / service comes back online.
Then if its offline email a particular email address showing the hostname of either the server or router and which location saying its offline. If possible to make it easier to change the devices to show possible have a txt file or something like that with the Hostname, IP Address, Location.
i 'm develloping an application that uses a sql server database, in my computer where i'm programming i installed the sql server in the same language of the OS, in the tests of the application everything worked fine. Biut after migrating the db to the main server, the values went crazy.. After some research and tests, i saw that the language of the sql server was in english and that was the problem.
My language settings says that the decimal separator is "," and the agrupment digit it's ".", and the sql server works in the other way "." is the decimal separator and the "," it's the agrupment digit. In my code i was using the CDEC to pass the values to the DB, to solve this i removed the cdec and send the parameter as a string (So if i send 2,33 to DB with CDEC i get 233 if i send the 2,33 string i get 2.33). This works for now, but i don't know if in the future i'll have problems...
I'm developing a shell (think LiteStep or SharpE) for Windows using Visual Basic .NET, and I have reached the point where I will need to get into theming other windows that doesn't run inside the shell itself.Modifications I will need to do is to change their title bars - probably using some kind of API call - to match the design I've integrated into the shell itself, if that is even possible. Having Aero on windows running in a shell that doesn't even look like Aero at all isn't very pretty.) Is there a chance I might be able to do this, or will I have to use a 3rd party application and/or develop my own little programming language for shell-specific applications (which would be a pain)?
