Oct 21, 2011I have an excel sheet with two columns. One column is the name of a file and the other column is a name that will be added to the filename once the file has been copied.
Example:
Column B = test.tif
Column A = find
The result will be = find_test.tif once the file has been copied and renamed......
All is good, however, it appears my program is not looking in subfolders and only in the main directory folder for the images.
What I have so far for the copy portion:

Feb 10, 2010I create a string array from a bunch of files that were dropped on a control after that i use a loops to pass that data into an array of my pictureObjects object (just stores filePath info and some other things).for some reason after it's been passed to the control the "My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile" doesn't seem to work at all... it's a valid file name and everthing.

This part works fine. What I am trying to figure out is how can I have a prefix in column B where it renames the file while being copied to the destination folder?

Nov 3, 2009I am helping a friend convert files from floppy to CD. The files are in WordPerfect for DOS (8.3)format. she named the files as follows: name.month eg; Baker.jan. if there were more than 1 "Baker" files in the same month she named them baker1.jan,Baker2.jan etc... She then copied them to floppies and when one got full she started another. The problem is I have multiple instances of the same filename on different disks so when I copy to my HD windows asks if I want to overwrite the files. I have been writing the names down and renaming them manually. Is there any way to automate this process? I would need to perform the following:
1. Check if floppy filename exists on HD already
2. if it doesn't, copy to HD
3. if it does, is it the same file or different file with the same name (file size has been a good indicator so far)
4.If it's the same =>ignore and go to next file on disk
5. if different, rename then copy to HD then go to next file
6. repeat until all files have been copied
I have 300+ disks to do this with and it is very time consuming.

May 14, 2011I am making a program where I want to copy & rename a file. I want to copy a file from a directory which I can choose (by OpenFileDialog1.FileName), then copy or move it to a directory. This directory has been newly made and named (progdirCollin). Let's say the file is called cv.pdf then I want it to be moved to the new dir and rename it Collin.pdf. The extensions can also be .rtf or .doc and I want them to be left unchanged. So I want to copy or move a file, rename it, but keep the extension of the file, which can be all kinds of file (vb.pdf to collin.pdf or vb.txt to collin.txt.)
Explained :
1. Put in the name of the person = V
2. Pick a file with the openfiledialog = V
3. Make a directory with the name of the person in the appdir = V
4. Copy / Move the file to the new directory = V
5. Then rename the file to the persons name, but keep the .doc / .pdf / .rtf etc = ?
All V = Done

Dec 31, 2011A while ago I wrote a quick and very very simple program to test myself on about 10 questions I needed to remember the answer to. I made a form with a label, text box and button. the label contained the question and the answer was entered into the textbox and the button was pressed to check the answer. the code i used was very similar to this:[code] Because I only had 10 questions it was fine to copy and paste the code a few times and rename the questions but now i am going to use this again but for a lot more questions (in the end there will be a couple of hundred) so i was wondering if any one knew a better way to do this? I was thinking maybe an array like 1 to hold the questions and 1 to hold the answers but i haven't worked much with arrays so I'm not sure how difficult this would be ?

I'm aware that to do so I must disable them from the Windows registry.
My problem is I don't know which is the right key to disable as the registry is so huge & some keys are similiarly named. say what are the exact key locations of the above-mentioned right-click functions in the Windows Registry ?

FileIO.FileSystem.RenameDirectory("C:Program FilesYahoo!", "Yahoo!1")
but when I run the code..it say's: IOException was Unhandled
Access to the path 'C:Program FilesYahoo!' is denied.
I think the OS is the cause of the problem. because in Windows 7 it asks for permission to change the name.
How could i make the program to continue renaming when the log in user is administrator.

May 7, 2009I created a VB.NET Winforms app a while ago that printed drawings. The way it did this was to copy files from a network share to the folder for a plotter's que. This plotter would automatically just print anything that was dropped into this folder, which was specified with a path like \Btltmkeng_plt_q. I would do this by using the System.IO.File.Copy method. This worked well, until the company switched to a new printer. When my app copies the file, the printer only prints blank pages.
However, if I open two Windows Explorer apps, and manually drag the file from the network folder to the printer que folder, it works! This proves that the printer can handle these files if they are properly copied. Therefore, I was wondering if there were "alternate" methods for copying files in VB. I tried using the My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile method, but that just error out saying it could not find the target folder. Is there another method that more closely resembles what happens when files are copied using Windows Explorer?

I have no compile errors, but when I run it, it throws an exception (System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException). I'm absolutely sure the destination existst (it's referencing the destination directory). I've tried doing it with system.io.file.copy(source,dest)and my.computer.filesystem.copyfile(source,dest). Same result either way.

Nov 18, 2011I'm creating what should be a simple copy and paste type of program. Basically you put text in the textboxes and click the copy button to copy it to the clipboard. I have a text file attached to format the text when it is copied. With that in mind, when I run the program(debug), i can successfully use it once. But, after clicking the "reset" button to clear all of the text boxes for another use, I fill in the information as normal, I click the copy button and i get this popup titled "ArgumentException was unhandled" followed by the error "Illegal characters in path".

Sep 10, 2011i got to do a program in VB.NET that copies a file from a pc to a usb device. I use the method System.IO.File.Copy(FileToCopy, NewCopy) in which i have to specify the destination path. The problem is that when i change pc the destination can change: for example in my pc i read my USB pendrive o G: and on my friend pc i read the usb pendrive on E:. How can i solve that? May i specify a general path to my USB giving it a name or anything similar?

I would need it to do this for each pst on the hard drive no matter the location. The user running the program will not have admin rights, so it will need to skip files it cannot access.

Apr 13, 2012Problem drawing dotted path lines, with even dots along the path line.I want to draw a path line that can be any shape (square, round, outline etc), and along this path line I want even dots to appear.
I also want to be able to resize the shape (as in the example attached)This is very easy to do using "DrawPath" and defining points for the path and using a pen defined as dots.The problem I have is I want the dots to be evenly placed along the path, on any shape or size I draw.In the example I have created, I create a square with 4 points and draw a dotted path.There are 2 buttons that allows me to resize the square (larger or smaller) this helps show the problem more clearly.
The path starts at the top left corner and finishes back at the top left corner, the dots are evenly placed along the path, except the final dots at the end of the path. (Sometimes the dots are even and other times they are not even).The shapes I want to draw can be any size and any shape, but I have used a square in this example to show the problem I have. point me in the direction I need to go that allows me to draw the dots and give the impression that they are even all along the path, for all shapes and sizes.
In the pictures below if you change the size of the shape, one will have even looking dots, the other will not.
