Service Will Not Stop While Thread Is Sleeping?
Feb 13, 2012
I have a VB .Net service, which uses System.Threading instead of a timer to basically do what a timer should do. My problem is stopping the service while the thread is in its sleep state. See the code below:
Imports System.Threading
Public Class AService
Private stopping As Boolean[code].....
If say 1 minutes after the service starts, it can not be stopped until its 15 minute interval ticks and the thread wakes. Is there any way to catch the signal that the service is attempting to stop, and interrupt the thread?

I have an application for PDAs with a long running process, and I'm getting the problem that the PDA is going to sleep before the process has completed.
I haven't got any control over the power settings on the PDA, does anyone know a good way for my application to stop the PDA from going to sleep?

Microsoft's System.io.file.exists and System.io.directory.exists can take FOREVER, especially if you're in a situation, where you've unplugged from the network and you're looking in a share.
So, to get around this, I've created a thread that times out after 3 seconds. Returning false, if the calls above haven't yet returned. To do this, my main thread passes its instance to the new thread and immediately calls:
Thread.Sleep(TimeOutInSeconds * 1000) ' Where TimeOUtInSeconds = 3
The new thread then goes and checks for the file / folder using the System.io.file.exists / System.io.directory.exists functions.
Regardless of the result, then it uses the main thread's reference to call Thread.Interrupt().
My main thread doesn't get interrupted. It stays there for the full 3 seconds. If I were to change that to 3 minutes ( and I have ), it'll sleep for 3 minutes.

I have the following code running in a thread to enumerate the local machines in the active directory. This takes some time to complete (about 5-10 seconds) so if the user quits the application before the enum is complete the application takes 5-10 seconds to quit. I tried thread.abort but because it is waiting for For Each SubChildEntry In SubParentEntry.Children to complete it doesn't abort until this returns.
Dim childEntry As DirectoryEntry = Nothing
Dim ParentEntry As New DirectoryEntry
ParentEntry.Path = "WinNT:"

I have an application in which there is a do...loop. I need the do...loop to perform some code and then stop for .1 of a second. When i try using System.Threading.Thread.sleep(), a wait cursot comes up and the application stops working. I was wondering if there was any way to get the thread to stop without stopping the application.

I'm working with vb.net 3.5SP1 /VS2008. I'm familiar with windows threads from C++ but I didn't do it since the 90s.I have 5 threadpool calls (ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem) that do some complex work (they read info from different web pages, regular expressions, etc) and each updates different columns in a data-grid view. They pause for 1 second between each web read with thread.sleep (not to overload the server). My issue is that some of the threads do not complete. I get for example 3 results when I should have 8. Sometimes it works fine. This is an older 3.0Ghz HT machine, I want to test it on the lowest common denominator(and that is all I have ). I tried using Monitor.Enter(ListView1)it seems to help but it is hard to tell. I tried using the thread debug window but it is not really helpful, it seems do disappear during execution. If I remove the threads I always get my data. I'm wondering if something is being blocked? Is there a way to debug this?
Also, does thread.sleep(x) stop all threads or just the thread that the statement is executed in?

My program starts a lengthy background operation in a separate thread, and the main thread makes the ProgressBar start scrolling. My question is, how do I tell the main thread how to know when the background thread has stopped, so it can turn off the ProgressBar?

I'm creating a program to stop a particular windows service.This windows service was also written by me.The service will watch a folder and cut and paste the file to another location.The service was running OK.And I have another (TESTING) console application which will try to stop this service only. (I'm doing testing!)However, the app failed to stop the service.
Here is the code i use to stop the service.
VB.Net
' AutoMover is my windows service name.Dim controller As New ServiceController("AutoMover")controller.Stop()controller.WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus.Stopped)controller.Start()
The debug line stop at WaitForStatus because the service didn't stop.Here is the Stop function from my windows service
VB.Net
Protected Overrides Sub OnStop() GC.Collect()End Sub
After a few seconds (may be 1 minutes or 2), there is an error message box pop up from window and said the following error msg.' Auto Move is my service Display Name.Could not stop the Auto Move service on Local Computer.Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.If I click Stop from Services.msc, it stop successfully. Strange!!

I have a vb.net application that uses threads to asynchronously process some tasks in a "Scheduled Task" (console application).We are limiting this app to run 10 threads at once, like so:
(pseudo-code)
- create a generic list of 10 threads
- spawn off the threadproc for each one
- do a thread.join statement for each thread to wait for the longest running one to complete.
What i am finding is that if the code called by the threadproc contains any "Debug.Writeline" or "Trace.Traceinformation" statements, the thread hangs. I can see the thread in the Debug - Windows - Threads window, and switch to it, but it highlights the debug.writeline statement and never gets past it. is there something special about the Debug or Trace statements that make them non-thread-safe? Any idea why this would hang things up? If I leave the debug statement in, the thread never completes. If I take the debug statement out, the thread completes in less than 5 seconds.

I was able to programmatically launch a service on my development server from a workstation using the ServiceController class with no problems.
When I try to programmatically launch the service on my production server from my workstation, I get an access error which means I do not have rights to run the service with my logged in ID on the workstation.
My question is, is there a way to launch the service using different credentials? I do not see anywhere to input these credentials in the ServiceController class.

Right now I have a windows service which only task is to gather data from a database with a specific DSN and then send out an email if the data is valid. The service contains a timer which ticks every 5 minuts and performs the tasks above.Now I need to re-write the windows service to be able to run on more than 1 DSN.I was thinking of making several threads inside the windows service and then again have a seperat timer inside each thread.Is this a good idea and how can this be done? I want to avoid having a windows service for each DSN.[code]

I have a per-call WCF service that serves a number of clients. I'm looking to speed up the services by running some background processes so they don't block or slow down the main function of the services.
One example is that the main function needs to return a set of data, while the background thread needs to record some statistics based on the parameter(s).
Code:
Public Function GetAccountDetails(id As Integer) As AccountDetails
Dim retVal As New AccountDetails
Dim a As New Accounts
[Code]....
If I use this background thread to record the statistic it doesn't block the main thread from returning the data to the client.
It's been working well in test scenarios, but my question is, are there any dangers with leaving this thread to execute without Joining it before returning the data to the client? Could there potentially be any loss of statistic data? Could there be potential memory problems on the server side?

The problem that I'm encountering right now is that I can't seem to get my program to wait for a couple seconds for another application to load before it starts to check if it's open. Here's what I've got (feel free to tell me its a terrible way of writing!):
Private Sub Running_Shown(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Shown
Main.Enabled = False
[Code]...
So if I don't have the sleep function then oasicer hasn't loaded and it says it's finished straight away, but if I call a 5s sleep then it crashes, and not for just 5 sec. Is there a replacement for this line? Something that would just delay going to the while loop?

I'm simulating some threading in a Windows Service, and the Thread.Start routine for each of my threads points directly to the following:
Private WithEvents CheckForOrdersTimer As System.Threading.Timer
Private Sub timerCheckForContracts_Tick(ByVal stateInfo As Object)
' Ticks every 5 seconds, then spawns threads until we're at our max
Do
[code]....
the threads aren't even doing anything yet, but with more than two threads running at the same time, my processor (Core 2 Duo 2.4 w/ 4GB) gets pegged and Windows gets really sluggish. According to what I've read, Thread.Sleep shouldn't be consuming any resources at all while it waits, but it may as well be running in a tight timing loop.
EDIT: Per the requests, I've expanded the amount of code I'm using. I was initially doing some database work before spawning each thread, but I've removed it and the processor maximization still occurs with just the code here (and, of course, the OnStart method for the Windows Service.

In one application, I need use 4 simultaneous threads.When the threads finished, I need to update the text of a TextBox.So, I create 4 Textbox, and I wanna the threads change the text to FINISHED.Each thread change one distinct TB.I use this "example"
Dim Terminados As Integer = 0
Private Sub frmEnviarMensagem_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Timer1.Enabled = True
Timer1.Start()
[code]....
The problem is, I have an error in the red lines.The error is: INVALIDOPERATIONEXCEPTION "Cross-Thread operation not valid: Control tbPlaca1 Accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on."I don't use cross threading. Each TB only was accessed for the correspondent thread, and for the "main program".

This is the error message I am getting:
"Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Panel1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on." The reason I am getting this error is because I am opening up a new form and then calling these three things:
Panel1.Show()
Label1.Show()
Label2.Show()
why I get this error message because it doesn't occur normally if I open Form2 after closing Form1, it only occurs when I open Form2 after closing Form4.
