Tools For Learning Agile Development Methodology?
May 13, 2010
I understand the the Agile development methodolgy is popular. It's supposed to be a good way to develop projects. And potential employers want you to know it. So I would like to learn it. What are the best books, tutorials, tools and anything else that you can use to learn it?

I am a self taught "developer".I use the term loosely because I only know enough to make myself dangerous. I have no theory background, and I only pick up things to get this little tool to work or make that control do what I want.
That said, I am looking for some reading material that explains some of the theory behind application development especially from a business standpoint. Really I need to understand what all of these terms that float around really talk about. Business Logic Layer, UI abstraction level and all that. Anyone got a reading list that they feel helped them understand this stuff? I know how to code stuff up so that it works. It is not pretty mostly because I don't know the elegant way of doing it, and it is not planned out very well (I also don't know how to plan an application).

I wish to develop windows mobile applications, preferably using VB (I 've done this in the past with VB6). What do I need to install? All my searches result in information about using 2005/2008 versions of Visual Studio, which seems odd if Microsoft are pushing to use Visual Studio 2010. I would like to use VS 2010. So, can I develop Windows mobile applications using VB 2010? If not, what version of VS do I need and what language should I use?
don't complicate the issue with a load of flannel. I just want to know that I need to install - this, with this SDK, these utilities and write your software in this language (ideally VB).

I have a theory that the CLR garbage collection mechanism means that I can get away with circular references in my object hierarchy without creating deadlocks for teardown and garbage collection. Is this a safe assumption to make? (Target language VB.NET)

For a few years I developed websites in PHP, but couldn't get a job doing this nearly two years ago. I spent a year teaching (and if your thinking of teaching, my advice is don't! In the UK anyway), but kept handing my CV out to different web development companies. One of these offered me a job, but the downside (or upside, depending on your views) that they only developed websites in ASP.NET. I made the decision for a career change and accepted the job.
In ASP.NET, you can develop in either C# or VB.NET. The guys I work with are using VB.NET, and I have to say I'm struggling with it. I can understand the basics but it just seems weird, especially as I've come from PHP. C# on the other hand, looks similar to PHP. I'm contemplating learning C# instead of VB, but I'd like to know what other peoples opinions are about doing this?

I have worked in Windows Forms for years, and still do. I'm not acquainted at all with the ASP.NET technology and no other Web related technology. I have worked with:
Oracle Form Builder;
Visual dBase 7.5;
Delphi 2.0, 3.0 and 7.0;
Sybase Power Builder 10.5;
Visual Basic 6;
Visual Basic 2003/2005/2008;
And ultimately, Visual C# 2005/2008.
I'm mostly a C# programmer with a growing experience in VB.NET for the current year. What would be the way to go to learn WPF the best possible way while taking into account my experience? And I'd like to know, will learning WPF improve my skills in ASP.NET and the like?

I have some very rusty C++ and lots of C experience, but have done little OO design or coding.I've started learning C++.NET as that seemed to be the best starting point.I've hit restrictions in Microsoft's provision with multiple inheritance and extensions, neither work in C++.Would I be better off starting again with C#, or am I better off using a mixed language approach. eg. extensions in C#, rest in C++?I'm still struggling with this->method or that.property and theother::staticthingy or whatever, and this probably is not an issue in C#. You'll see what I mean as that probably isn't the right way to desribe the difference between '->' '.' and '::'I'm getting to achieve what I want, but it's taking me 10 times longer than I think it should.

I realize that VB.NET and ASP.NET are the successors of their seemingly obsolete classic counterparts, but I have noticed that some job descriptions still list VB6 and classic ASP as requirements. This may be because they want people who can convert code from classic to .NET, but I'm not really sure.

I've been programming in C/C++ for several years and want to learn enough Visual Basic to create GUI front ends for some of my C programs & also so I know that C functions I have written can be called by VB programs that others write. I expect that the C programs would have to be turned into DLLs for this to work.
I have created some C DLLs & created other C programs that sucessfully call the functions in the DLLs. BTW I did this with Visual Studio 2010, would there be any advantages to using other versions?Can anyone recommend a book or a website to quickly get me up to speed on VB while allowing me to skip over the parts that are intended for people who are new to programming?
Many of my programs call functions from the Windows API such as CreateFile. IINM these functions can be called from VB, but it is done differently than in Visual C++, eg: in C++ Create file returns a HANDLE variable, but the HANDLE variable type doesn't exist in Visual Basic. So I'll need to learn enough about how Visual Basic uses the Windows API to pass the file HANDLE from the C functions to the VB calling program & back.

I had made it a goal to learn this particular aspect of programming with .Net at one point. In my applications I use objects and classes, but when reading SO topics, I have the idea I don't use real OOP principles. For example, I never use inheritance or interfaces. Therefore, I am trying to learn proper OOP (in VB.NET), but I find some concepts quite hard to understand (even after reading a lot about the subjects on SO).So I'm trying to find a book or resource with good practical real-world examples. For instance, I kind of understand examples like using an interface for both Dog and Cat classes when using a EatFood method, but I find it hard to relate it to real-world cases.Ideally these books or resources should cover explanations about:
- when and why to use inheritance or interfaces or abstract classes
- when and why to use private, public, protected, virtual etc.
- best practices in dependency injection /inversion of control
- when to use aspect oriented programming
- using of constructors
- solid principles
- singletons
- encapsulation
Perhaps it's a mix of all kinds of concepts, but I think these are all related to OOP, please correct me if I'm wrong.I would prefer a book/resource with VB.NET examples, but this might be difficult?

Will the Microsoft Visual Basic Deluxe Learning Edition Version 5.0 run on Windows XP? This (ancient) product description does not list anything newer than Win 98.I am hoping to relearn BASIC programming and do not wish to spend a lot on current VB versions. I have an opportunity to purchase a used set of discs for a reasonable sum.I'm using a 32 bit version of Win XP Home with sufficient CPU speed, RAM, and HD room.

Please someone help me to find sources to learn writing macros for MS Office Word. I am ended up with getting web pages for only "Recording macro" explained in different ways. While seeing those web pages i got to remember the sentence.
"Sometimes people come up with awful analogies in an effort to describe a concept which is too difficult for a regular person to understand.An infinite number of monkeys hitting at an infinite number of typewriters for an infinite amount of time will eventually produce all works of Shakespeare.". from infinite monkey theorem. Recording macro is very easy one. Most of the writers ended up with writing this article. Please someone suggest me to learn writing Macros for MS Office Word. I am using Word 2007.

I was wondering if there is a way to take an object in Visual Basic 2010 (Express, FWIW) and browse through its structure to visualize how the data inside is laid out.For example, I have an object called "model" that is populated by a function that is a black box to me. Model is set by a "read" function that loads a DXF file from disk. The read function isn't very well-documented.
What I've discovered is that model.Entities ends up containing a list of different objects, all with different properties. I'd like to be able to simply browse this list of objects and view their associated properties and values at run-time, similar to how you can use Intellisense to view a list simply by typing "blah." and waiting for the pop-up to appear.A tree view that you can pop open and closed would be excellent. Obviously this has to work during run-time rather than in the editor because the file hasn't been loaded if the program isn't running.
Is this something that's possible in Visual Basic 2010? Is it a built-in feature I can't find?
