I am looking for the best way to edit and update the value of a database column that is defined as data type TEXT. You can't use a replace command in SQL and if I read in the value, update the data and update the record, the changes are not applied.

SQL Server has a Data Type of "Float". Visual Studio has a Data Type of "Decimal". In other words, if I have a variable in a VB.Net app that is defined as a "Decimal" ...can I move that value into a SQL Server Data Table column defined as a "Float"?

The idea of the query is that I want to specify an OrderId, and I want all Oven Loads that have items from that order in them, as well as ALL OTHER ITEMS in those loads, even though they could be from other orders.The query works as expected, but I'm not able to use it for my Crystal Report I've written it for.I have put this query into a User Defined Function, however I'm unable to use a call to that function as a table source in my Crystal Report. I am using Visual Studio 2003 (I know it is old, the client refuses to upgrade).
Attempting to run an SQL statement to UPDATE a column in a table with new data. The column being updated is defined as varchar(40) and the new data is 41 bytes (varchar(41)). I get a generic 'data will be truncated' error message, but no detail on which column caused the problem. I've attached a sample VB program to illustrate the issue. In this scenario, Company is defined as varchar(40).
My question: Can I get a more detailed error message? i.e. can I get an error message that tells me the row and column that the truncation occurs in? Often times, I may be updating hundreds or thousands of rows and only one value in one column from the source file is too large for a database cell. As a related question, does each OLEDB provider create its own error messages. i.e. will the MS SQL Server OLEDB provider potentially give different text in the error message than say the MS Jet OLEDB provider?

As the title says, when I attempt to update a row in a table in a database, I recieve an InvalidCastException. I am unsure why, since the variables I am using should be, and indeed, when I check them at runtime, are filled with the correct data.
I am trying to update using the method wherein the row that is being updated is identified with all the variables already stored. View 1 RepliesI have 2 tables that are related,both have identity columns for primary keys and i am using a vb form to insert data into them,My problem is that i cannot get the child table to get the primary key of the parent table and use this as its foreign key in my database.the data is inserted fine though no foreign key constraint is made.I am wondering if a trigger will do it and if so how. All my inserting of data is done in vb.The user wont insert any keys. all these are identity columns that are auto generated. If a trigger is my way out please illustrate with an example.

View 3 RepliesI am using TextFieldParser to Read a Tab Delimited Text DataFile. The problem I have is that some times the data file (3rd party provided) contains an extra Tab which therefore creates an extra column. I need to remove this unnecessary column. Some columns will have rows that are empty so I cant just delete the column if it has a blank row, So I think I need to loop through each column and if if every row is blacnk then delete that column.

In a particular operation I want to create a dataset, bulk copy it to another SQL Server, then update a flag column in the copied rows.I'll have a system that will be regularly inserting new rows of data, then at regular intervals want to copy that data to another SQL Server. Once the rows have copied I need to change a flag column so that they won't get copied again.Whilst this is going on there is a strong possibility new rows of data will be being inserted into the source table. Due to the design of the database I have to work with, I need to write a stored procedure in such a way that I can pass in the name of the table to be queried against if at all possible. The program in question does its processing by jobs, and each job gets its own table created in the database, IE table-jobid1, table-jobid2, table-jobid3, etc. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about this design - I'm stuck with it.
However, now, I need to do data mining against these individualized tables. I'd like to avoid doing the SQL in the code files at all costs if possible. Ideally, I'd like to have a stored procedure similar to:

Is this even possible in SQL Server 2005? Alternate ways to keep the SQL out of the code behind would be welcome too, if this isn't possible.
