View 39 RepliesI'm writing a small application to detect the insertion of USB memory sticks and prompt the user to accept the device or reject it. Rejecting it would prevent its being loaded by Windows. I have the code that detects insertion & removal working fine but have no idea how to cancel the insertion.I was thinking that I could intercept the DEVICEARRIVAL message and kill it off before its actioned by Windows but I am lost with this.code to show the way.Heres the main part of the code I have so far-

View 5 RepliesI am using Visual Studio/VB.NET 2008 and have a NumericUpDown control on Windows Form. I am forcing user to use Up/Down buttons to change the value, preventing direct entry of a value. This is accomplished be setting the ReadOnly property to True - so far so good. Is there a way to prevent the Insertion Mark from displaying? The Insertion Mark makes it look like the value can be edited, which is not possible with ReadOnly True.

I have roughly 20 text boxes on my form,When you press tab, it naturally selects all text in the box (highlighted in blue), so you can press any key, and it replaces it with that,That result is what I want, unfortunately, if you click into the text box, and tab back to it, it no longer selects all the text.I'm wondering how I can detect the tab event properly,I've tried adding a 'KeyDown' event to each text box, and then selecting the text, but the sub never runs, also tried detecting the tab event in my Main Form, thinking that perhaps the parent handles it and will receive that event, but.. No.I've thought of using an event like 'Activated' however, it will also run when the mouse is clicked.

The question is, how do I pass on that event back to my Form1 class? My application has a form which contains several Textboxes where user is required to fill up data. Once data is filled up user can click on "Save" button to save the data. I have added lost focus events to all textboxes so as to validate user input. When I click on cancel button, i want to detect cancel button click, but textbox lost focus is fired first so I get error message for textbox before my code moves to cancel button click handler. Is there any way to detect button click before lost focus event?
View 4 RepliesI do a lot of programming in VS 2010 on my Windows XP Pro PC. Recently I tried testing my software on a Windows 7 Home PC. For some reason, all of the controls on my forms are slightly misplaced. I also get a bunch of unhandled exceptions I don't get on my pc. For example, one exception said it couldn't access a registry key. Another said it couldn't find the part of a path (it didnt specify which path). What's up? Why is it doing this? My Win XP PC tricks me into thinking my apps are bug free. Guess not.

I am developing a parental control application containing a feature that logs a user off of the computer after an administratively set period of time. I do not however want the application to continue counting time against the time limit when the user is not active on the computer. EXAMPLE: Child logs on and is active for an hour then leaves computer for 45 minutes to get dinner. The session timer needs to ignore the 45 minutes of inactivity. I have thought of two ways to accomplish this.
1) Use a SystemEvents.SessionSwith event (to detect the Start Menu > Log Off > SwitchUser action), or
2) Use an event which would detect user inactivity in excess of a set time, e.g. 5 minutes (similar to a screensaver).
Either event would call a method which would simulate a pause feature (as StopWatch and Timer have no pause support that I know of). I believe the 2nd option would prove to be more universally affective as 1) some users do not have Fast User Switching enabled, and 2) users would be required to manually switch users in order to prevent their inactive time from counting against them. My problem arises when I attempt to implement one of these methods. According to the IntelliSense error checking engine, I have absolutely no clue how to do either of these tasks in spite of the research I have conducted on the topic. I would prefer to go with the system idle time approach.
I'm trying to create an inherited version of the ListView control that (among other things) should have a different background image if the listview is empty to if it has items.Obviously you can easily enough test the count of the collection, but I need to be able to react to the event, however there doesn't appear to be any event related to adding/removing items.

I have created a simple framework for a Windows service in VB.NET Express 2008. It enables a timer which then writes to the event log every 6 seconds until the service is stopped. This works fine. I adapted that framework into something further. It is using Windows sockets. Well, I haven't finished that part yet and I just want it to write to the event log successfully but I can't even get it to do that now. I am trying to write an event in the OnStart event. The service is being started successfully, according to the standard event log, but my custom events are not getting there. I don't understand why as I am using the same code for that as I was before.

I am programming using VB.Net and I am fairly new to it. I have searched for the past week on the Internet and come across information suggesting that I use TAPI, however I do not know what to import, or where the "flight mode detection" code would go in my application.
