right now, im using Windows Vista.. in Windows XP, deleting a file is working with this code System.IO.File.Delete("C: estdelete.jpg") But in Windows Vista, i encounter this message: Access to the path 'C: estdelete.jpg' is denied. why its happening? what is the solution for this?

View 5 Repliesi have created some shareware applications. I implemented the following mechanism for piracy protection. Before Windows Vista and Windows 7 i did write a dll file to the System32 folder with an encrypted license key. Also in the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE i inserted a registry key.
The problem is that with Windows Vista and Windows 7 due to the User Account Control (UAC) this is denied.
I want to ask : what other mechanism can be implemented ? Where should i store the encrypted key file and the registry key.
I want that the application can be installed for all users of a computer only once.
If i stored the key in the user's application data directory then another user could easily just install it under another user account. Also i do not want to put the key file in the application directory because that would be too obvious.
note that i create the registry key with my application and not with the installer.

The BCDEDIT tool is a command line tool.IS there a way to program vb.net to use bcdedit and pass several different commands to it so that I can make the same changes in Vista I want to change to these values from there defaults

I have created a script that opens up an .msi with a transform file. To make changes to the transform file, I have created a temporary .msi file. Once the changes have been made to the file, I want to delete the temporary .msi, but I am unable to as I get an error that the file is in use by another process. That process is the VB .exe itself. I need to be able to release the handle on this file so that I am able to delete it.
I have tried this by using both the 'ReleasecomObject' using try/catch and through using 'FinalReleaseComObject'. I do not get errors when running this in the script, but it still won't allow me to delete the file.
Using VB6 to create a file and then open the file just created fails when run on a Vista client with Windows 2008 Server. The same code will work when run directly on the Windows 2008 Server or when using an XP client. If a Sleep 10000 is placed after the close, the program will work. What is the problem here? Now, I'm changing my laptop, and the new has installed the Windows 7. So, I reinstalled VS 2005, taking care to install the Vista compatibility. Thus, the version of my current VS 2005 is 8.0.50727.867 (vsvista.050727-8600) SP2. And that is my problem.
When I ran the application in debug mode (F5) on Windows Vista, a windows appeared whenever there was an error, like below:
Now, on Windows 7, the application just shows a exception message in the Immediate Windows, don't showing any error window, continuing the application execution, as below:

I have an application that works fine on Windows XP. However I have taken the same application and made some modifications to it to run on vista the app loads fine etc.
the problem stems from trying to change a service in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesDiagnostic Service Host
Start = 4 instead of 3 (which is what it is currently set to)
when the program tries to change it I get a dialog box with the information below. How can I makes the changes to the registry without getting these kinds of errors. I tried to get the Framework configuration tool but it talks about XP and Windows 2000 for VB.Net 2005 so I am not sure what to do... I should mention I have only been programming for a month...

I created an app that connects to an SqlCe database. it runs fine on my computer (xp) but when i try to run it on other computers, it crashes (on xp machine, the error is : OS error: the OS storage system is not responding, on windows 7 the error is: Access to the database file is not allowed).
On windows 7, if i right click the exe and run as administrator, it runs fine. But, i can't expect my users to do this every time they want to run my app.

Any .csv files named 1.csv, 2.csv, or 3.csv will not delete using delete() method of system.io namespace. if i do any number greater than 3 it works. For example, 4.csv, 5.csv, etc. works fine. 1.xls, 2.xls also is ok. The error it is throwing in my log is 'access to the file is denied.' Nothing is using the file. I even copied a new file into the directory and it does not work. I even created a 1.csv in a totally different directory with no luck. What is going on with this? Has anyone ever experienced this?
