File Not Found After Creation Vista To Windows 2008 Server?
Aug 31, 2009
Using VB6 to create a file and then open the file just created fails when run on a Vista client with Windows 2008 Server. The same code will work when run directly on the Windows 2008 Server or when using an XP client. If a Sleep 10000 is placed after the close, the program will work. What is the problem here? The code is as follows:
Option Explicit
Private Declare Function GetTempFileName Lib "kernel32" Alias "GetTempFileNameA" _
(ByVal lpszPath As String, ByVal lpPrefixString As String, ByVal wUnique As Long, _
[code].....

I've create a VB2008 app that upon clicking the applications Start button it creates an icon in the taskbar that is visible to the user upon creation, it also shows a balloon tip at the time of creation. This all works great when the program starts but once the balloon tip timeout value has elaped, the icon, in Windows 7, disappears from the visible portion of the taskbar and becomes hidden, which is only visible if the user shows the hidden icons.
My question is this...... In the VB2008 program is there any way to set the behavior of the icon so that it remains visible on the taskbar instead of allowing the icon to become hidden?
The original design of the program was to get an environmental variable, display the value of that variable in the balloontip, hide the form and then check every 10 minutes for a change in that environmental variable. Once the form was hidden the user could see that the program was running by the presence of the icon in the taskbar and if they hovered over the icon it would display the current value of the external variable. Also if the user wanted to return the form to it's full size all they had to do was click on the taskbar icon. With Windows 7 if I hide the form and the icon is not visible in the taskbar because it too is also hiddem this may create a problem for the user as they may not even be aware that Windows 7 hides the icon. So....Is there anyway to insure that the icon remains in the Windows 7 taskbar or is this a case where I need to re-evaluate my program design?

We have an VB.net application that is being moved from one box to another. It runs great on the old box. The new box is configured the same as the old one but is on newer hardware. When I run the application on the new server it complains that the adobe toolkit that we use can not be found.

I have written a VB.NET 2008 application, incorporating Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel, that modifies an existing Excel 2007 spreadsheet. It works perfectly on my WinXP development computer. When I upload the app to a Microsoft Web Server 2008, it opens the file and reads from the file, but when the app tries to save the file, it throws this exception:"System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800A03EC): 'july2009.xlsx' is read-only. To save a copy, click OK, then give the workbook a new name in the Save As dialog box."The file is NOT read-only, nor is it opened by any other user or app.The app and the Excel file both reside on the D: (data-only) drive. My first instinct was to look at file permissions. When nothing else worked, I literally created a temporary Group, added EVERY user and security entity to it and granted the group full control of the entire D: drive. No luck.
Then I tried manually elevating the permission by running my app as administrator. No luck. Finally, I copied the file to my XP development computer and ran the app there. Of course it worked perfectly. Can anyone please tell me how to give my program permission to edit a file on Server 2008?

how to get working aero in Visual Basic 2008.I am making this media player and got everything I need for that. But what I really wanted is aero since Windows Vista got a nice interface and a few lucky people got it.But the tutorials I got worked great on Windows 7! However, I couldn't get aero because of a transparency key. (I swear I use a color picker to see if background color and transparency key are the same color.)I can't get it to work any piece of code I give. But the good part is that aero WILL work on any 7 or Vista without any form change, but the text is white with blue specks and that is not what I want.
EDIT:i found how to do it now! you need to use the property UseCompatibleTextRendring and put it to True. Now the problem is how do i do the same for the rest? (microsoft was to lazy to edit the controls)

windows service app I am developing to audit events in the Windows Security Event Log. I am using the EventLog class to read entries from the "Security" event log. I have set the log to raise events when an entry is written so I can parse the data. Here is where my problem comes in. If I run the service on Windows 2003 I can get all the data I need from each entry, but when installed on Server 2008 the EventLogEntry ".message" property comes back with useless data like this, "The description for Event ID '4738' in Source 'Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing' cannot be found." Under Server 2003 the message property has good data. Using the Event Log Viewer in Server 2008 I can see that it is rendering the correct data, but I am having a heak of a time doing the same. The "replacementStrings" property has the corresponding data that I need, but it appears to involve some other steps to get the data localized to the event provider, but I do not know how to do that.
I also checked the registry HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesEventlogSecuritySecurity on both the 2003 servers and 2008 servers. They are identical execpt the 2003 has an entry the 2008 server does not:
String Type: GuidMessageFile
Value: %systemroot%system32NtMarta.dll

I am using Process.Start(fileName) to let Windows open certain files outside of my application with their 'default application'.If "fileName" for example is a ".txt" file, it opens the file in Notepad. If it is a folder, it opens windows explorer with that folder selected. This all seems to work well, except when the user enters a file that has no application 'linked' to it.(a file that has no file associations)I have wrapped the Process. Start() in a Try/Catch block so that any errors are caught and displayed. When I now open a file without any file associations (windows does not know with which application to open it) it tells me that it cannot find any application to open it with. (The exact error is in dutch so I don't think that's going to be much help here, but I think it's clear what's happening, no?)What I would like to happen in this case is that the windows "Open With" dialog comes up, asking the user to select an application to open the file with. Now it just displays the error message and continues, making it impossible for the user to open the file unless he browses to the file manually and sets up the file association, something many users probably don't know how to do.

I have a ERP system which create a PDF file and write it to the disk when the invoice is beeing created. On the other side a have an .NET app, which every 10 minutes read data in that folder and automatically send an e-mail to my customer with the invoice attached. The problem is that sometimes, when .NET app try to read a file which currently is beeing created -> The file is damaged. How to avoid such a situation? Is there a way to e.g. read only file creation time, and if it's "younger" than 5 seconds order app to wait a while?

So I'm a bit new to the whole Vista/7 audio setup. My understanding is that a new "mixer" is created for each application. Is there some new .Net function which interfaces with these mixers? I'm actually trying to create an application which can adjust the MAIN system volume level as well as the mute function.
I was looking at the Endpointvolume API however I cant get it to work for me :(. Does anyone have a vb.net demo of how to harness this API?

Durring game play of a game I am designing, I recieve a lovely crashing event in which my computer tells me that "vshost" has stopped working. Also, i get a message after debuging that tells me the problem is due to a compatability error between my version of windows and the version of C++ that is running.
I was not aware C++ was running. Can anyone offer any explanation for this? I will gladly share the code and the game with anyone interested. So far both computers that I have attempted to play the game on ultimately ends in a crashing vshost or windowsapplication1 but the second computer was able to run the game smoothly for much longer.
If anyone wants to try the game on your own system I will e-mail it to you, (small file) 4.7 mb
I'm curious to know if it will crash on every computer.

Trying to begin rewriting a VB6 application using .NET (as a Windows Forms app.) to get some practical coding experience.First hurdle is the best way to connect from VB.NET to typically various stored procedures in a SQL Server DB... I'm of course struggling a little along the way as well w/the difference in syntax and so forth, too.Anyone out there have an example you can point me to as far as typical blocks of code you use in calling to establish connectivity to SQL Server databases, populate SQLDataAdapter objects, etc?My assumption is that I need to create a connection object class and have everything in there and just call various methods of that connection object class whenever I need to connect to the database, retrieve data from stored procedures to populate fields on various screens of my app., close the connection to the database, etc.

I am trying to run a fortran .exe in VB with the Shell() command. The fortran .exe, when ran, it asks you for a file name. It works perfectly on it's own, but when I try calling it through VB Shell(), it does not work.. (i.e. I cannot get VB to get the file name in it.)
Added info:I am using VB9 but I'm writing in compatibility to .NET. As for the Fortran .exe, when you call it, it opens a command window where it asks for a file name (which I got as a string in VB and I'm trying to pass it in), then you press Enter and it's done. Basically the .exe takes a text file and creates a new text file. We've also tried adding & mystring when calling the exe, but it gives a "file not found" error.

We are currently using Access 97 as our database. This resides on the remote farm server (which is a Windows 2008 R2 server). We are using a front end vb6 exe which accesses the back end data.Occasionally we are getting corruption to our database and we have to make sure everyone exits the software to allow us to repair/compact it. There are 2 physical servers, each running 2 virtual machines. When the user logs onto the farm using RDP, they go to one of these 4 virtual machines. We are getting all kinds of corruption, some where # characters have been inserted into the top of one table, some where the indexes are corrupted, and some where access needs to repair the database.
