Audio Volume Controls Windows Vista/7 VB 2008

So I'm a bit new to the whole Vista/7 audio setup. My understanding is that a new "mixer" is created for each application. Is there some new .Net function which interfaces with these mixers? I'm actually trying to create an application which can adjust the MAIN system volume level as well as the mute function.
I was looking at the Endpointvolume API however I cant get it to work for me :(. Does anyone have a vb.net demo of how to harness this API?

It seems like this would be a very easy thing to accomplish, but, from what I can tell, it's most definitely not. My OS is Windows 7. All I need to do is get the current volume/audio level - the master volume. When you click the little speaker icon in the task bar and change the volume - I need that number. All I need to do is get the current volume and assign it to a label. So if the volume is at 74 when the application starts, I need my label to display 74. I've been searching for days now for a way to do this and I'm starting to get frustrated. I've looked everywhere. I've tried 3 different classes, at least a dozen different codes, assorted imported dll's- none of it even came close to what I need. From what I can tell, the current methods are all designed for windows xp. I need a way to do it in windows 7.

Is there a way of creating a Vista/Windows7-like caption bar with controls just like in the windows explorer? The controls don't have to do anything, I would like to add my own functionality - I just wonder how I could make something like this? Does anyone know about a VB sample?

I can only find C++ coding which, sadly means nothing to me.
I would like to be able to record the current Audio Volume setting, change it (up or down), play a *.wav file, then return it to it's original level.

I have been at it for a while and cannot get it to work.[code]by double clicking on a picture box. The Start/Stop/Pause buttons work just fine, however I can not get the volume and mute to work.I can physicaly click on the mute button and move the volume bar,but I have no control over the music volume and mute function.

I would like to be able to: -

I've been fighting for weeks now to make a simple music playback program. It would function much like Windows Media Player without the visualisations and playlists. I'm writing this on a Win7 box, but it needs to work on XP and newer.
I say fighting because I'm severely annoyed at how MS has worked some items and it's taken many days to go through everything only to find that it doesn't work.
I started by using WMP in VB Express 2010 and having it play my music. Simple, but not portable. I copied my .exe to a WinXP machine and it blew up. I copied it to a different Win7 machine and it doesn't run (I can double-slick all day, nothing happens,
no log entries, nothing....)
Then I find that there is an issue with the GUID of media player on different computers, and it'll most likely fail to run when you try to use it on other machines than the one the program was built on.
So I gave up on that.
I then figured I'd use DirectX. It's on XP and newer already, and is supposed to be backwards compatibile so if I build my app on Win7 it should still run on XP and such. I did that, and it works fine on the machine I built it with (again). My shuffle works,loop/repeat works, got my own version of a playlist and it all works. I copy that to another Win7 box and it doesn't run at all. It's setup as .NET 3 so I can be sure of compatibilty with WinXP.
For grins, I gutted all the code in my VB app involving calls to Directx and built that. It runs fine on other computers, including my XP test box. So I know the problem revolves around DirectX somehow.[code]...

I have written a console app in <acronym title="Visual Basic">vb</acronym> .net 2003 to capture audio data (albeit not for an audio application) using the WinMM API. This works well in XP and also on my own Vista PC. However when others try to use in on Vista or Win7 it stops working after about 10 - 30 seconds (so it manages to initiate recording from the default input device but eventually stops). The only error given is "Program has stopped working". I am wondering if this is related to the way I recycle the input buffers?

I have my forms all set up, I want a button on my main form that says Volume. When clicked it either opens a window above the current form with a volume control. Or opens another form that has the volume control in the center. When the slider is moved up to 100% windows is at 100% volume, when moved down windows volume moves down also.

I have a program that will process the files and produce the result in output file.When i publish and install the software in xp windows it run but in windows vista it read the file everything when i look for output file. The file is not created in vista. But other program which similar with previous one can run in windows vista expect one program. This is how i write the coding to create the file.

how to get working aero in Visual Basic 2008.I am making this media player and got everything I need for that. But what I really wanted is aero since Windows Vista got a nice interface and a few lucky people got it.But the tutorials I got worked great on Windows 7! However, I couldn't get aero because of a transparency key. (I swear I use a color picker to see if background color and transparency key are the same color.)I can't get it to work any piece of code I give.But the good part is that aero WILL work on any 7 or Vista without any form change, but the text is white with blue specks and that is not what I want.
EDIT:i found how to do it now! you need to use the property UseCompatibleTextRendring and put it to True. Now the problem is how do i do the same for the rest? (microsoft was to lazy to edit the controls)

I'm attempting to use waveOutSetVolume from coredll.dll to gradually increase the audio volume from silent (or near silent) to maximum.
Most of the code examples I'm finding show some predefined set points for Off, Low, Normal, Medium, High, and Very High like this:

OK, and here's some API documentation which doesn't make a lot of sense to me in this particular context. What is low-order word and high-order word and how can they both exist in a single value?

A value of 0xFFFF represents full volume, and a value of 0x0000 is silence. If a device does not support both left and right volume control, the low-order word of dwVolume specifies the volume level, and the high-order word is ignored.

I've been digging around but I can't seem to find anyway to adjust the volume controls (the windows general ones) using VB .NET.Basically, I want to make a program that's always on top that allows me to changemute the microphone and the other volume values on a specific device - not necessarily the one set as default.
I got this weird feeling that I'm missing something quite simple but I simply could not find anything. I saw some media players and such but nothing similar to what I was looking for.

Durring game play of a game I am designing, I recieve a lovely crashing event in which my computer tells me that "vshost" has stopped working. Also, i get a message after debuging that tells me the problem is due to a compatability error between my version of windows and the version of C++ that is running.
I was not aware C++ was running. Can anyone offer any explanation for this? I will gladly share the code and the game with anyone interested. So far both computers that I have attempted to play the game on ultimately ends in a crashing vshost or windowsapplication1 but the second computer was able to run the game smoothly for much longer.
If anyone wants to try the game on your own system I will e-mail it to you, (small file) 4.7 mb
I'm curious to know if it will crash on every computer.

Im trying to capture the audio played on my laptop. so i have searched the internet and found a source code for doing exactly that. the problem i have is that my audio device is not listed in the dropdown box (see picture) but it does when its run on windows xp (im running windows 7 x64) the goal of this application would be to capture my friends radio stream and save the individual played mp3's to a loction on my hard drive.(yes i have permission) i have included the source code so perhaps some 1 could have a look at it. Using VB6 to create a file and then open the file just created fails when run on a Vista client with Windows 2008 Server. The same code will work when run directly on the Windows 2008 Server or when using an XP client. If a Sleep 10000 is placed after the close, the program will work. What is the problem here? I need to create a few visual controls to reside on my form.
1- Rotary Selector to rotate and select an option. (maybe up to 16 steps per rotation or 0 to 15.)
2- Rotary dial to act like a volume control. This actually selects a value between 0 to 255 or 0 to 1023. (is this too many steps?)
3- Bunch of selector push buttons to act like the old car radio selector? (pushing one resets the other buttons. Just like old car radios?)
