Use DirectX Audio Functions In Program For WinXP / Vista?

Apr 9, 2012

I've been fighting for weeks now to make a simple music playback program. It would function much like Windows Media Player without the visualisations and playlists. I'm writing this on a Win7 box, but it needs to work on XP and newer.

I say fighting because I'm severely annoyed at how MS has worked some items and it's taken many days to go through everything only to find that it doesn't work.

I started by using WMP in VB Express 2010 and having it play my music. Simple, but not portable. I copied my .exe to a WinXP machine and it blew up. I copied it to a different Win7 machine and it doesn't run (I can double-slick all day, nothing happens,
no log entries, nothing....)

Then I find that there is an issue with the GUID of media player on different computers, and it'll most likely fail to run when you try to use it on other machines than the one the program was built on.

So I gave up on that.

I then figured I'd use DirectX. It's on XP and newer already, and is supposed to be backwards compatibile so if I build my app on Win7 it should still run on XP and such. I did that, and it works fine on the machine I built it with (again). My shuffle works,loop/repeat works, got my own version of a playlist and it all works. I copy that to another Win7 box and it doesn't run at all. It's setup as .NET 3 so I can be sure of compatibilty with WinXP.

For grins, I gutted all the code in my VB app involving calls to Directx and built that. It runs fine on other computers, including my XP test box. So I know the problem revolves around DirectX somehow.[code]...

Find 'My Documents' In WinXP & Vista

Audio Volume Controls Windows Vista/7 VB 2008

Sep 3, 2009

So I'm a bit new to the whole Vista/7 audio setup. My understanding is that a new "mixer" is created for each application. Is there some new .Net function which interfaces with these mixers? I'm actually trying to create an application which can adjust the MAIN system volume level as well as the mute function.

I was looking at the Endpointvolume API however I cant get it to work for me :(. Does anyone have a vb.net demo of how to harness this API?

WinMM Audio Recording Code Works In XP But Not In Vista

Dec 29, 2010

I have written a console app in <acronym title="Visual Basic">vb</acronym> .net 2003 to capture audio data (albeit not for an audio application) using the WinMM API. This works well in XP and also on my own Vista PC. However when others try to use in on Vista or Win7 it stops working after about 10 - 30 seconds (so it manages to initiate recording from the default input device but eventually stops). The only error given is "Program has stopped working". I am wondering if this is related to the way I recycle the input buffers?

DirectX 2D Drawing With Program?

Sep 28, 2011

I'm using using System.Graphics for my latest project (A simple 2D application). Problem is, it gets a horrible FPS and I'm only drawing 8x8 tiles (usually 10-12 is enough to bring it down to 12FPS).

A friend of mine suggested that I use DirectX. He also suggested XNA but I opposed because I don't want my clients to have to install the XNA distributional. DirectX is common enough (to my knowledge) and I can just include the dll's if I need to.

So, my search began. I've been looking only for DirectX 2D tutorials for VB.net. I've had no solid success thus far. In truth, all I need to do is be able to draw bitmap x at position pos.

I've been using System.Graphics and a hacked up bitmap as my buffer thus far so I'll go for any improvement that I can get.

I'm using VB.net so I'll be ok if you give my one for C#, I'm pretty good at being able to read it (and I have a nice converter too). I would just prefer VB.net to save time.

Routing Modem Audio Out To SR Engine Audio Input Under VB / VBA?

May 20, 2009

I have a database application developed around Access with VBA,I have used the Speech SDK and developed an application that in conjunction with MSCOMM 6.0 library calls into a remote IVR system. It sends in the credentials and queries information in response to that IVR's verbal requests. All seems successfull except for one problem;I'm using a shared SR engine and its using the system microphone as its audio input, this in turn gets the sound from the speakers which are routed to the telephone line through the modem. Of course this has a number of disadvantages - noise added to the sound from the environment and sound quality degredation as well as speaker volume dependency.

I would like the SR engine to take its audio input from the modem in paralell with the sound that goes to the speakers (so we can listen in to the call as well). This means that I must route the system audio output to the SR engine audio input. It seems that I must use an InProc SR instance - however in VBA that type is not recognized - since the shared SR uses the microphone as input by default. there is some statement to the effect that it is difficult in Microsoft's Help file. I'm unable to set the SR audio input to the modem output stream in VBA.As needed I can accomplish the C++ interface using an ActiveX object or a DLL to expose the missing API to VBA?

Writing A Program Which Plays Audio Using A Windows Media Player Control?

Oct 11, 2009

I'm writing a program which plays audio using a windows media player control. It's quite basic but I'm running into a problem.

Soundplayer.Ctlcontrols.play()
Sleep(3000)

For some reason when this appears in my code, the sound doesn't start playing until AFTER the sleep. I have music running in the background, using another windows media player control, that continues playing just fine.

Basically, I want nothing else to happen for the duration of the sound, hence the sleep, so how can I make it so my sound starts playing BEFORE the sleep?

Program Can't Function Fully In Vista

Aug 17, 2008

Back when VBStudio 2005 was the latest in .net programming, I created a program that, among other things, sets the user's system clock after obtaining certain code from time.gov and adjusting it according to a set of numbers. Due to a change in one of the websites with which the program works, it stopped working. I downloaded VB2005 Express (since I reinstalled WinXP since then and didn't feel like looking for MSVB Studio 2005), opened the source code, and made the correction. The program now works in what appears to be its entirety in WinXP. However, when it attempts to perform the function I mentioned earlier on a Vista machine, an error (a built-in error I included in the program) appears. Note that even on a Vista machine, the program does have some functionality. All requests that the program makes to access other websites is done using HTTP web requests.
