VB 2008.express + Windows.Vista = Disaster * Totalfailure

Feb 27, 2009

Durring game play of a game I am designing, I recieve a lovely crashing event in which my computer tells me that "vshost" has stopped working. Also, i get a message after debuging that tells me the problem is due to a compatability error between my version of windows and the version of C++ that is running.

I was not aware C++ was running. Can anyone offer any explanation for this? I will gladly share the code and the game with anyone interested. So far both computers that I have attempted to play the game on ultimately ends in a crashing vshost or windowsapplication1 but the second computer was able to run the game smoothly for much longer.

If anyone wants to try the game on your own system I will e-mail it to you, (small file) 4.7 mb
I'm curious to know if it will crash on every computer.

VS 2008 Aero In Windows Vista?

Jul 20, 2011

how to get working aero in Visual Basic 2008.I am making this media player and got everything I need for that. But what I really wanted is aero since Windows Vista got a nice interface and a few lucky people got it.But the tutorials I got worked great on Windows 7! However, I couldn't get aero because of a transparency key. (I swear I use a color picker to see if background color and transparency key are the same color.)I can't get it to work any piece of code I give. But the good part is that aero WILL work on any 7 or Vista without any form change, but the text is white with blue specks and that is not what I want.

EDIT:i found how to do it now! you need to use the property UseCompatibleTextRendring and put it to True. Now the problem is how do i do the same for the rest? (microsoft was to lazy to edit the controls)

Audio Volume Controls Windows Vista/7 VB 2008

Sep 3, 2009

So I'm a bit new to the whole Vista/7 audio setup. My understanding is that a new "mixer" is created for each application. Is there some new .Net function which interfaces with these mixers? I'm actually trying to create an application which can adjust the MAIN system volume level as well as the mute function.

I was looking at the Endpointvolume API however I cant get it to work for me :(. Does anyone have a vb.net demo of how to harness this API?

File Not Found After Creation Vista To Windows 2008 Server?

Using VB6 to create a file and then open the file just created fails when run on a Vista client with Windows 2008 Server. The same code will work when run directly on the Windows 2008 Server or when using an XP client. If a Sleep 10000 is placed after the close, the program will work. What is the problem here? The code is as follows:

Option Explicit
Private Declare Function GetTempFileName Lib "kernel32" Alias "GetTempFileNameA" _

Date Disaster In XML?

Nov 14, 2011

Why does my xml file I created with the dataset.Write method always add the hh:mm:ss to the date? I have in my dataset a date column(I had to create a date, change it to a shortdate string, then back to a date for appearence and sorting) then XML messes it up. My Ecxel worksheet looks like crap with all that extra hh:mm:ss attached to my 2/2/2011. I tried to format the column by hand and Excel 2007 ignores the manual format. Any suggestions would be nice. Using VB Express 2008, On Windows XP Pro?

Apr 20, 2011

I am using VB Express 2008, on Windows XP Pro. I have written a programme which compares the prices and terms of up to 10 Bidders and 500 line items in mixed currencies. The programme has been working well, but I decided to introduce a progress bar to indicate the percentage of completion in lieu of a simple label saying, while the wrap-up subs ran. Unfortunately, my attempt at threading does not work. The Progress bar completes, before the wrap-up subs start.

.Net 2010 Express And Access Database On 64 Bit Vista?

May 22, 2012

I posted this as a bug on MS Connect and am wondering if anybody else can verify the problem: I been beating my head against the wall for about 3 days and I don't think it is my problem.

Desktop computer - Vista 64 bit
Portable Computer - Vista 32 bit
vb.net 2010 express on both of them

I can not establish a connection to an Access db (either .mdb OR .accdb) on the 64 bit computer. When I try I keep getting a message that says "Format at the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0." (this was typed not copied). (There are screen shots over on Connect).

I can establish a connection to a "Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition" (.sdf) database on the 64 bit computer.I can estabish a connection to all 3 types on the 32 bit computer (.sdf, .mdb, .accdb).The 'funny' thing is that if I establish the connection on the 32 bit and copy the program directory over to the 64 bit, the prorgam loads and seems to run fine. But the %$# _(%* Wizard will not run on the 64 bit machine. Runs fine on the 32 bit but not on the 64 bit. Of course I make sure that the db's are in the location where the program expects them to be when I run the program on the 64 bit machine.

One final thing, when I am in the progam created on the 32 bit and running on the 64 bit and I try Data->Add New Data Source->Database->Dataset only two of the three connections show up while all 3 show up on the 32 bit machine. Also the connection string is incorrect for the non-sdf connection. It should include

VS 2005 Piracy Protection Mechanism And Windows Vista Or Windows 7

Apr 19, 2010

i have created some shareware applications. I implemented the following mechanism for piracy protection. Before Windows Vista and Windows 7 i did write a dll file to the System32 folder with an encrypted license key. Also in the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE i inserted a registry key.

The problem is that with Windows Vista and Windows 7 due to the User Account Control (UAC) this is denied.

I want to ask : what other mechanism can be implemented ? Where should i store the encrypted key file and the registry key.

I want that the application can be installed for all users of a computer only once.
If i stored the key in the user's application data directory then another user could easily just install it under another user account. Also i do not want to put the key file in the application directory because that would be too obvious.

note that i create the registry key with my application and not with the installer.

VS 2008 : Make Buttons That Will Open Each Of The "special Folders" In Windows Vista?

Private Sub Button5_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button5.Click
Process.Start("explorer.exe", Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments))
End Sub

As you can see in the above code, the button will open the Documents folder. My problem is the only folders this method can open are the documents, pictures and music folders, while I also want to open these folders below:

Downloads
Videos
User folder (aka the folder that has the user name on it)
Computer (aka My Computer in XP)

how to do that?

Datagridview Does Not Show Data At Runtime In VB Express 2008 In Windows 7

Dec 11, 2009

I'm using Visual Basic Express 2008 in Windows 7(64-Bit). I've added a datasource to my project and dragged a table from Data Sources onto my form. It automatically created a DataViewGrid and placed this statement in my form load event:

Me.BillsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.DoBills_2009DataSet.Bills)

The DataGridView shows all the correct fields/columns. The .DataSource property for the DataGridView is set to the automatically created BillsBindingSource. When I preview the BillsTableAdapter, the data appears. But data does not appear when I run the app. The datagridview is empty. When I build the app and run the executable, I get a Microsoft .NET Framework error message that says: "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the applicaiton will close immediately. The 'Microsoft .ACE.OELDB.12.0' provider is not registered on the local machine." If I click "Continue" I get my form with an empty DataGridView. What am I missing to get the data to display in the grid at run time? Oh, and I've also tried using the DataGridView in C# and I get the same problem.

Now, I'm changing my laptop, and the new has installed the Windows 7. So, I reinstalled VS 2005, taking care to install the Vista compatibility. Thus, the version of my current VS 2005 is 8.0.50727.867 (vsvista.050727-8600) SP2. And that is my problem.

When I ran the application in debug mode (F5) on Windows Vista, a windows appeared whenever there was an error, like below:
